VIKING RIVER CRUISES 2019

1 2 Exploration meets relaxation

Exciting, surprising and enlightening, a Viking river journey is like no other. As rich in natural beauty as it is in fascinating culture, it gives you a unique view of each country’s destinations and takes you straight to their heart. Days are filled with exploration, new discoveries are made, along with new friends. Nights reveal cities illuminated by twinkling lights and usher in relaxed entertainment over drinks and conversation. It’s a journey of new experiences and familiar comforts. Of seeing and doing. Of celebrating moments and creating memories. And it starts right here.

3 Th e new way to travel is thousands of years old

For centuries, rivers have been the life force of the countries through which they flow. Cities have grown along their banks, towns have prospered and people have travelled their waters, connecting to each other and the wider world. And when you travel by river, you see the world in a completely new and unique way. Gliding through timeless landscapes into the heart of each destination, you can step ashore and immediately start exploring.

A river cruise is like lots of city breaks rolled into one. Imagine. One evening you’re dining under the twinkling lights of Budapest’s Chain Bridge, the next, you’re listening to a concert of classical music in Vienna. Is there a more rewarding way to travel?

29 River Douro

Originating in the rugged wilderness of western Spain, the River Douro weaves its way through northern Portugal to the historic city of Porto, and the Atlantic Ocean.

Carved into the mountains along its route are steep terraced hillsides blanketed by vineyards, with whitewashed quintas perched above. Grapes have been grown here for more than 2,000 years and in 2001, UNESCO declared the entire Alto Douro wine-growing region a World Heritage Site. The Portuguese ‘Rio Douro’ loosely translates as River of Gold, and when you see the sun setting on the water, it does indeed gleam like a bar of gold through the dramatic landscape.

The Romans called it the Albus, meaning ‘shining’. The Germans call it the Elbe. The Czechs, the Labe. Whatever its name, the River Elbe has shaped some of the region’s most dramatic and breathtaking scenery.

The Elbe is one of Europe’s few rivers that still follows its natural course. From the Giant Mountains of the Czech Republic to the soaring rock formations in Germany’s Saxon Switzerland, the river flows serenely to the North Sea through some of Europe’s most glorious cities and towns. Hilltop castles, exuberant palaces, cobbled market squares and grand cathedrals all add to the storybook atmosphere. A journey along its waters will transport you to another age.

This is the river of travel posters, of hilltop castles surrounded by lush wooded forests, craggy cliffs and steep vineyards. Of medieval villages with half-timbered houses and Gothic church steeples appearing around every bend. And of glorious cities with grand cathedrals soaring above the horizon. At around 800 miles long, the most scenic section is the Middle Rhine, 40 miles of which is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, dramatic gorges of timeless beauty have inspired poets and painters, past and present. Every river revels in its own legends and folklore, but none capture the imagination quite like the Rhine.

For centuries, the Danube has been the muse for artists, composers and poets.

Lined with grand cities, ancient towns, UNESCO-listed landscapes and picturesque vineyards, the river flows through Europe’s treasured past across 10 countries for almost 2,000 miles, from Germany’s Black Forest to the Black Sea. It meanders through Regensburg and Passau into Austria’s Wachau Valley, and Vienna – once the centre of the Habsburg Empire. Further downstream, east of Budapest, in Slovakia, Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania, the Danube has seen millennia of history and drama unfold. The Romans, Vikings, Ottomans and Habsburgs all laid claim to these lands. Now they are yours to explore.
