Research

My research is concerned with the process of technological innovation and its management. At firm level it focuses on trying to identify the key structures and behaviours which enable organisations to renew their business offerings (products/services) and the ways in which they create and deliver them. Product and process innovation of this type requires capabilities both in 'doing what we do better' - continuous improvement' - and occasionally 'doing something different' - radical/discontinuous change. My work aims to improve understanding of what is needed here but also to identify or develop tools and techniques to enable organisations to build and sustain these capabilities.

An increasingly important dimension to this problem is the fact that organisations do not operate in isolation. Most activity involves different kinds of relationships with other organisations and understanding how the principles of effective innovation management can be applied to inter-organisational networks forms an increasingly important area of my research.

At sector and national level my main interests are in the processes of technology transfer and the design and evaluation of policies to enable these to operate well. In particular I have been working on policies designed to develop a supportive infrastructure for providing innovation support to smaller enterprises – via networking, targeted information and advisory support and through innovation consultancy systems.

Over my career I have been responsible for raising over £20m in research funds from various sources to support this work. Sponsors have included the major UK research councils, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Anglo-German Foundation, the National Economic Development Office, OECD, the International Labour Office, the EU and various branches of the United Nations.

Current research projects in which I am involved or have recently concluded include the following:

• Exploring the Humanitarian innovation system – DFID project with University of Brighton

• Supporting ‘excluded entrepreneurs’ - consortium-funded project with EU, DCC

• Tools for developing innovation management capability – ‘TACITT’ , EU funded programme

CV January 2016

Further details of these and previous projects are available.

Policy advice and evaluation

I have been involved in a number of projects with branches of regional and national government in several countries and for major international agencies. Outside the UK (where I have worked on a variety of projects for BIS, DTI, DIUS, BERR and with the National School of Government) these include work in Australia (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries), South Africa (Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Arts, Science and Culture, National Research Foundation), Switzerland (Ministry of Industry), Thailand (World Bank/ National Science and Technology Development Agency), South Korea (World Bank), India (Industrial and Commercial Finance Corporation), Denmark (Ministry of Research, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Danish Employer’s Federation), Venezuela (National Science Council), Colombia (Andean Pact Organisation), Cyprus (Employer’s Federation).

I have also been involved in several advisory roles with agencies of the United Nations (Dominican Republic, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Cuba), the European Union (Romania, Kazakhstan, South Africa), the International Labor Office and the OECD.

Education and training

I have been teaching since 1980 and have worked with a wide range of universities, colleges and on in-company training programmes around the world. I am currently involved in the MBA programmes at Exeter University where I am responsible for the Innovation Management component on the various full and part-time versions of the course. This strand provides a range of personal and organisational development opportunities based around a taught programme and a ‘live’ consultancy assignment – the Innovation Management Project – which provides experience in consulting skills, teamworking and project management whilst focusing on some aspect of innovation management within a range of public and private sector organizations.

Previously I was responsible for the original development of the industrially-based MSc/MBA course in "Management of Technology" at the University of Brighton and from 1995 to 1998 was Co-Director of the ‘Technology and Innovation Management’ MSc programme at the Science Policy Research Unit, University of Sussex. I was also involved in both MBA and Executive education programmes at Cranfield and in developing and teaching management of technology programmes in Spain, Colombia, Denmark, India, Italy, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia and France, and was part of the Open University team developing a European Master’s degree in Technology Management.

The emphasis in my work is on helping individuals and organisations develop capabilities in understanding and managing innovation through four principal mechanisms:

CV January 2016

• Encouraging and enabling reflection and experience-sharing on key themes in managing innovation

• Introducing and explaining novel concepts to help understanding of innovation management

• Developing new tools and techniques to help deal with innovation management challenges

• Supporting and mentoring individuals through personal research activities

Industry-based training

In addition to formal academic programmes I have designed and delivered a number of in-company education and training inputs; clients include BAA, BNFL, BP, Ericsson, Daewoo, Doncasters, Hella AG, Hosiden Besson, the Kings Fund (health sector), Lancaster Motors, Lego, Northern Foods, Novo Nordisk , Seeboard, Thomson Training and Simulation, Toyota, UKAEA.

Within the UK Teaching Company (now Knowledge Transfer Partnership) programme I have been involved in programme design and supervision with Bott, Graphic, Applied Materials, Gencel, Hosiden Besson and Pyroban.

Research supervision and examining

I continue to provide supervision and support to students working on Masters and Doctoral programmes and have supervised 7 M.Phil, 26 Ph.D. and 2 DBA candidates to completion.

I have acted as External Examiner for 42 Ph.D. and 5 M.Phil. candidates.

Training materials

I have also been involved in the development of training and open learning materials for a wide range of clients including the UK ESRC, the Virtual University, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the Open University, the Hotel and Catering Industry Training Board, Bristol Polytechnic and the National Computing Centre. Increasing emphasis is placed on Internet, CD and multimedia resources and I have been involved in developing such materials for the European Union, the UK DTI, the World Bank and the South African Dept. of Arts, Commerce, Science and Technology.
