At firm level it focuses on trying to identify the key structures and behaviours which enable organisations to renew their business offerings (products/services) and the ways in which they create and deliver them. Product and process innovation of this type requires capabilities both in 'doing what we do better' - continuous improvement' - and occasionally 'doing something different' - radical/discontinuous change. My work aims to improve understanding of what is needed here but also to identify or develop tools and techniques to enable organisations to build and sustain these capabilities. An increasingly important dimension to this problem is the fact that organisations do not operate in isolation. Most activity involves different kinds of relationships with other organisations and understanding how the principles of effective innovation management can be applied to inter-organisational networks forms an increasingly important area of my research. At sector and national level my main interests are in the processes of technology transfer and the design and evaluation of policies to enable these to operate well. In particular I have been working on policies designed to develop a supportive infrastructure for providing innovation support to smaller enterprises – via networking, targeted information and advisory support and through innovation consultancy systems. Over my career I have been responsible for raising over £20m in research funds from various sources to support this work. Sponsors have included the major UK research councils, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Anglo-German Foundation, the National Economic Development Office, OECD, the International Labour Office, the EU and various branches of the United Nations. Current research projects in which I am involved or have recently concluded include the following: • EXploring the Humanitarian innovation system – DFID project with University of Brighton • Supporting ‘eXcluded entrepreneurs’ - consortium-funded project with EU, DCC • Tools for developing innovation management capability – ‘TACITT’ , EU funded programme CV January 2016 Further details of these and previous projects are available. Policy advice and evaluation I have been involved in a number of projects with branches of regional and national government in several countries and for major international agencies. Outside the UK (where I have worked on a variety of projects for BIS, DTI, DIUS, BERR and with the National School of Government) these include work in Australia (Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries), South Africa (Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Arts, Science and Culture, National Research Foundation), Switzerland (Ministry of Industry), Thailand (World Bank/ National Science and Technology Development Agency), South Korea (World Bank), India (Industrial and Commercial Finance Corporation), Denmark (Ministry of Research, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Danish Employer’s Federation), Venezuela (National Science Council), Colombia (Andean Pact Organisation), Cyprus (Employer’s Federation). I have also been involved in several advisory roles with agencies of the United Nations (Dominican
