As to the derivation and the meaning of the name "Litz" Francis E. Litz has done a fairly comprehensive search on the meanings.1 In summary Litz means "people". Litz also means "prayer ofthe people " Another source said the name was locational and meant "dweller near a fence of hedge". Still another Litz meaning was "people or warriors". I guess we can pick the one we like. Immigrants to America Litz is a very uncommon name This has great benefits when doing genealogical research. Because there are so few that carry the Litz name the probability of being related to another Litz, you meet in America, is great Likely the first Litz to come to America was Johannes. He arrived on the Ship Furtherance on 30 November 1750 The second Litz to arrive in America was the great grandfather of Peter Gose Litz. His name was Johan Philip Litz Johan was born about 1709 in Germany. He and his family arrived on the Ship Patience in Philadelphia 9 September 1751 Peter Gose Litz's grandfather John William Litz was also born in Germany Peter's Grandmother, Mary Catherine Dinniger, was born in Aichotz, Wurttemburg, Germany The third family to come was Adam Litz from Bavana in about 1844. The fourth to come was Franz Josef Litz " Where have the Litz families migrated to since their arrival in America? Peter Gose Litz's grandparents (John William Litz and Mary Catherine Dinniger) were married in Deny township, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania in 1755 John William died in Montgomery county, Virginia and Marv Catherine in Wythe county, Virginia Peter Gose Litz was born 25 April 1802 in Cripple Creek, Wythe county, Virginia and died in Burke's Garden. Tazewell county, Virginia in 1880 The Litz family has scattered themselves pretty much throughout the country. A survey made bv Francis E Litz in about 1967s gives a picture where the Litz families have migrated to since their arrival in Amenca His survey showed Litz families living in the following states: Arizona 2 Michigan 2 California 15 Missouri 8 Connecticut 2 Nebraska 7 Colorado 6 New Jersey 6 Delaware 1 New York 44 Dist of Columbia 2 North Carolina 1 Florida Ohio 3 Illinois Oregon 1 Indiana 8 Pennsylvania 39 Marvland 70 Texas 2 Massachusetts 1 Virginia 10 Michigan 2 West Virginia 10 Though the Litz families have dispersed over 50% of them have concentrated themselves in three states Man. land. New York and Pennsylvania Of the above 256 families 141 of them live in cities. • BULLETIN of the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station
BULLETIN OF THE Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station NuMBER 280 DECEMBER, 1914 SOME IMPORTANT ANIMAL PARASITES AFFECTING OHIO LIVE STOCK DON C. MOTE INTRODUCTION Parasites that infest farm animals cause enormous losses to the livestock interests of Ohio. The exact, or even approximate, ex~ tent of these losses is not known and probably never will be deter~ mmed. However, sufficient information is at hand to show that the damage done by the more common parasites, external and internal, is of great economic consequence as well as of much scientific in~ terest. While the study of this subj ~t at this Station has only begun, it has already shown that the field is an important one, and it is be~ lieved that Ohio stockmen will be interested in acquainting them selves with some facts concerning the more common and im portant parasites that infest Ohio livestock. All who know of the existence of parasites in their flocks and herds are requested to send specimens and complete information concerning them to the Experi ment Station, to aid in this study. This publication is not issued 3JS an exhaustive treatise, but rather, as an introduction to the subject, callmg attention to some of the parasites that are prevalent in the state and suggesting some measures to be taken in combating them. DESIRABILITY OF A KNOWLEDGE OF DISTRIBUTION The importance of a knowledge of the distribution of an animal parasite throughout the state is not generally appreciated. A re view of the history of the hook worm in man, of sheep scab, and of Texas fever in cattle-three of the most widely known diseases due to animal 'Parasites, will indicate how absolutely essenti~ are (23) 24 OHIO EXPERIMENT STATION: BULLETIN 280 the records of distribution.

263 rd COMMENCEMENT MAY 20, 2019 20, MAY R D COMMENCEME 263 NT CLA S S O F 2 019 M A Y 20, 20 1 9 CLASS OF 2019 KEEPING FRANKLIN’S PROMISE In the words of one elegiac tribute, “Great men have two lives: one which occurs while they work on this earth; a second which begins at the day of their death and continues as long as their ideas and conceptions remain powerful.” These words befit the great Benjamin Franklin, whose inventions, innovations, ideas, writings, and public works continue to shape our thinking and renew the Republic he helped to create and the institutions he founded, including the University of Pennsylvania. Nowhere does Franklin feel more contemporary, more revolutionary, and more alive than at the University of Pennsylvania. His startling vision of a secular, nonsectarian Academy that would foster an “Inclination join’d with an Ability to serve Mankind, one’s Country, Friends and Family” has never ceased to challenge Penn to redefine the scope and mission of the modern American university. When pursued vigorously and simultaneously, the two missions – developing the inclination to do good and the ability to do well – merge to help form a more perfect university that educates more capable citizens for our democracy. Penn has embodied and advanced Franklin’s revolutionary vision for 279 years. Throughout its history, Penn has extended the frontiers of higher learning and research to produce graduates and scholars whose work has enriched the nation and all of humanity. The modern liberal arts curriculum as we know it can trace its roots to Franklin’s innovation to have Penn students study international commerce and foreign languages.
