Noel George CROMIE

His aircraft, a Martinet I, HP464, took off from Oakley for an air firing detail over The Wash towing a drogue for an air

firing exercise involving Wellingtons from the same unit. Around 16:40, and approaching the completion of the

exercise, the Martinet lost height and ditched in the sea off Burnham. Eyewitnesses reported that both crew members managed to escape the fast sinking aircraft. Later, when help

arrived it was discovered they had both drowned. The bodies were recovered for burial.

An unconfirmed report suggesting that this was the village of his fiancé and the reason he was buried here.

His drogue operator 28 year old Warrant Officer Frederick William REED, RAFVR. is buried in Kent at Tunbridge Wells cemetery.
