Abstract Renewing the Soul: Towards an Enhanced Pentecostal Philosophical Theological Doctrine of Human Constitution Having given a fresh historical overview of Pentecostal thought concerning the doctrine of human constitution, and so ascertained the trajectory Pentecostal theology is on concerning this doctrine, this thesis identifies Amos Yong and then Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen as significant voices towards the end and present of the trajectory, with the potential to influence its future direction. The thesis highlights both scholars’ assumption that any dualistic view of human constitution - specifically, understanding the soul as a distinct immaterial (and after death, separable) entity from the body - is theologically and philosophically problematic, and charts their alternative proposal(s) of an emergent monist view of human constitution. Responding to them, the thesis counters their theological and philosophical challenges, and further contends that their emergent monist proposals suffer much greater problems. It then argues for and constructs an enhanced Pentecostal view of human constitution - one more consistent with Pentecostal theological emphases, and also stronger philosophically than Yong’s and Kärkkäinen’s - proposing a new ‘Enspiritable Dualist’ view, by renewing the soul. Through giving it suitable prominence in Pentecostalism’s theology of constitution, and by establishing the centrality of the S/spirit in the new model, the soul is renewed, in turn, redirecting the trajectory’s future. Widmeyer University of Michigan [email protected] Abstract The principle of trichotomy from the American philosopher Charles S. Peirce can be used to categorize processes into the triad of transactional, informational, and relational. The usefulness of these categories is explicated by a comparison with structuration theory and control theory, and elaborated with a consideration of democracy in a knowledge economy. These three example applications of the process triad show the generality of the conceptual categories and provide a natural way of bringing ideas from social and ethical theories into information systems design. Modeling the world and understanding business applications through the use of the Trichotomy of Processes should facilitate the development of more valuable information systems. Reviewed by Stephen Palmquist, Department of Religion & Philosophy, Hong Kong Baptist University, Kowloon, Hong Kong, E-mail: [email protected] https://doi.org/10.1515/jtph-2020-0021 Notwithstanding its title, this book is not about the science called “logic”—at least, not insofar as “science of logic” refers to the rules, procedures, and guiding principles that constitute the laws of thought. While Huaping Lu-Adler often refers in passing to logical operations such as syllogisms, she never discusses their rules of operation. She does mention the law/principle of (non)contradiction eight times and that of identity once (p. 14); yet these all appear in quotes or side-comments. (She never mentions the law of excluded middle.) Similarly, she limits her treat- ment of potentially relevant post-Kantian developments in logic to a few brief glosses on Boole and Frege (pp. 3, 195–7), without referring to propositional logic, fuzzy logic, dialetheism, etc. However, this is all by design, so prepared readers need not be surprised by such omissions. Indeed, as the author announces in the Introduction and repeatedly reminds her readers, the book’s focus is on “the philosophy of logic” (pp. 3–4), not on the mechanics of how logical relations as such actually function. The Introduction acknowledges that historians of logic have typically either defined logic narrowly and therefore found nothing new—and thus little worth writing about—in Kant and other Enlightenment philosophers, or else they have followed Kant’s immediate predecessors by defining logic in a broader sense than we do nowadays and have therefore written voluminously on the views of “logic” advanced during this period, but in ways that relate very little to modern con- ceptions of logic.

    HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY QUARTERLY Volume 34, Number 2, April 2017 AQUINAS AND ARISTOTELIANS ON WHETHER THE SOUL IS A GROUP OF POWERS Nicholas Kahm n the Aristotelian tradition, there are two broad answers to the basic Iquestion “What is soul?” On the one hand, the soul can be described by what it does. From this perspective, the soul seems to be composed of various different parts or powers (potentiae) that are the principles of its various actions. On the other hand, the soul seems to be something different, namely, the actual formal principle making embodied living substances to be the kinds of things that they are. Contemporary Aris- totelians are split on how to interpret Aristotle: Anna Marmodoro (2013, 18), Thomas Johansen (2012, 81), and most others argue that the soul is nothing but a kind of cluster or group of powers. Rebekah Johnston (2011), however, strongly disagrees and argues that the soul is only the actual principle of embodied substance.1 Aquinas provides a novel and neglected solution to this problem and would argue that both sides are partly right but that either side is insufficient without the other. The first part of this paper discusses how Aquinas can simultaneously hold that the soul as form is not a group of powers while also holding that the soul as mover or potential whole is composed of powers. The second part discusses why he would disagree with Johnston’s arguments that the soul cannot be a group of powers, and the third part discusses why he would disagree with arguments that the soul is nothing but a group of powers.

Specifically, it explores how the Enlightenment produced the modern Western perception of the nature of the mind and its relationship to the body. While most traditional Enlightenment historiography argues that the movement was defined by radical, atheistic thinkers, like Diderot and Spinoza, who denied the existence of the traditional Christian immaterial and immortal soul, this project demonstrates that these extreme thinkers were actually a minority, confined largely to the intellectual fringes. By contrast, not only were many Enlightenment thinkers sincere Christians, but they were actually the most effective communicators of new ideas by showing how the Enlightenment supported, rather than attacked, traditional Christian beliefs. This moderate Enlightenment is responsible for developing Western ideas about how the mind and body are related, especially within the emerging fields of psychology and psychiatry in the mid-nineteenth century. This dissertation gains its focus through an examination of the work of two historiographically neglected enlightened thinkers—David Hartley in Britain, and the Abbé de Condillac in France. Both of them argued for the traditional Christian belief in an immortal soul, but used enlightened ideas to do so.

In order to identify the particular elements of this type, the article makes use of Erving Goffman’s frame analysis to organize Pentecostal theological activity. This methodological starting point is followed by an overview of existing interpretations of Pentecostalism as a form of play. The main portion of this essay then constructs from an analysis of everyday experiences visible in Pentecostalism a primary framework of activities oriented around the transformative encounter with the Holy Spirit. The sequence of activity involves a primary and overlapping pattern of Pentecostal spirituality, experience, narrative, affections, practices, and embodiment. Demonstrating that play is not exclusive to Pentecostalism, but that Pentecostals manifest a particularly visible form, demands that greater attention is paid both to Pentecostalism as a religious tradition and to play as a theological model.
