Foundation Design and Construction Challenges at the Vehicle Security Center, World Trade Center, New York City

The Vehicle Security Center (VSC) located on an approximately 200 ft. by 400 ft. parcel of land bounded by Liberty Street on the north (original World Trade Center bathtub slurry wall), Cedar Street on the south, Greenwich Street on the east and West Street on the west is vital to the function of the World Trade Center (WTC). When completed, it will serve all buildings within the WTC. This multi-level state of the art vehicle screening and parking facility required excavation ranging between 60 ft. and 100 ft. below in challenging geologic conditions. The ambitious excavation adjacent to historic structures and the New York City Subway required innovative earth retaining structures to minimize the impact of the excavation on these structures. Slurry walls, buttress walls with creative shear connectors between panels and composite concrete walls which made use of the existing former Deutsche Bank basement wall and foundations were used alongside secant pile walls to form earth retaining structures and permanent basement foundation walls.
