GRAEME MCDOWELL Since his days as a member of the UAB men’s golf team to his rank among the top golfers on the PGA Tour, former Blazer Graeme McDowell returns to his college roots as the host of the 2014 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate. While at UAB, McDowell won the Fred in 2002, given annually the the nation’s top col- legiate golfer. He was a two-time PING All-American (2001 and 2002) and a two-time C-USA Golfer of the Year (2001 and 2002). On top of all that, McDowell captured nine tour- nament medalist honors and had 24 top-10 finishes. Since turning pro, McDowell has won a total of nine professional events. The most memorable came in 2010 when he won the U.S. Open Championship. He also played a vital role in the 2010 victory for the European side, sinking the clinching putt. He was selected for his third Ryder cup in 2014 for Team Europe. Through it all; however, McDowell has never forgotten his roots. He returned to Birmingham in 2010 to reunite with former teammates and visit with his former coach, Alan Kaufman. He also wanted to pass along some of his expe- riences to the current Blazer team members. “I came here as a pretty average amateur golfer and left here ready to set out in the pro ranks,” McDowell said back in 2010. “I was very lucky to end up at a college like UAB with a golf program like this. I certainly wasn’t the best play- er when I came on to the UAB golf team. I think, just being out here in the states and being around that winning mentality that they have here and practicing every day on great facilities like Shoal Creek and Old Overton and Oxmoor Valley and the Birmingham Country Club, that really helped me. “It’s great to be a part of the UAB alumni and be able to come here and give something back to the teams and meet with some of the coaches. Any time UAB is playing football or basketball or anything, I’m always taking notice and check- ing out how they’re doing.”

The 2013 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate, hosted by Graeme McDowell individual co-champions, Ole Miss’ Blake Morris (left) and Memphis’ Lars Van Meijel (right).

The UAB men’s golf team hosted the 2013 Shoal Creek Invitation- al for the second consecutive year after not running the tour- nament from 2009-2011. Last year’s tournament saw team and individual course records fall. Memphis won the team title after recording an 842 (-22), a Shoal Creek Invitational record. The Tigers stormed to the title after a 14-under third round. UAB finished second after scoring an 848 (-16) for the event. It tied for the second-best finish for the Blaz- ers, who were second in 2007. Two players split the individual crown in 2013. Memphis fresh- man Lars Van Meijel and Ole Miss junior Blake Morris shared the medalist honors. Both golfers recorded a 208 (-8) for the tourna- ment, which was also a record for the event.
