20 2014 University of Evansville Women’s Soccer The 2014 PURPLE ACES Season Preview The 2014 University of Evansville squad will return 17 letterwinners, including nine starters from last year’s team that finished 9-6-4 overall and 2-3-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Purple Aces will be without departed seniors Stephanie Thompson and Lauren Tiernan, who combined for six goals and four assists in 2013, but return thier top two leading scorers in juniors Kayla Smith and Abby Springer, center back senior Taylor Brand, and one of the nation’s top goalkeepers in junior Simone Busby. Smith was limited to just 13 games last season due to a season- ending injury she suffered in a match against Missouri State, but the Evansville native managed to lead the team in all three key offensive categories, putting up 14 points on five goals and four assists. T he junior forward scored 11 of her points in a four-match span, that included a five-point effort against Belmont. Springer started all 19 games in UE’s attacking third and finished second on the team with nine points, scoring four goals and adding an assist. in the midfield, Evansville welcomes back MVC All-Freshman Team honoree Bronwyn Boswell, junior Allie Arguello and sophomore Emily Richardson. Boswell scored a pair of goals for the Aces last season and finished second on the squad with 58 shots, putting 19 on frame. Arguello was a key defensive component of the midfield, as she started all 19 games and helped UE post a MVC- best 0.90 goals against average and seven shutouts, while Richardson scored five points on a pair of goals, including a game-winner, and an assist. Sophomore Emily Griebel will provide depth in the Evansville midfield, as she appeared in 14 matches last season and scored a pair of goals in her freshman campaign. the Aces’ back line will be led by All-MVC Second Team selection in Brand and will be bolstered by the fellow senior Tatiana Pagan, who earned MVC Honorable Mention status last season. Brand earned MVC Defensive Player of the Week honors five times in 2013 and was the central defender on a unit that led the Valley in goals against average and shutouts. Pagan was named the MVC Defensive Player of the Week once last season and started all 19 games, recording an assist in a victory over Belmont. Busby will be back on goal for UE in 2014, after earning All-MVC Second Team honors and a spot on the MVC All-Tournament Team as a sophomore. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native led the Valley with a 0.91 goals against average last season and added an .841 save percentage and six shutouts, to rank second in the league in both categories. Entering her junior season, Busby owns a career goals against average of 0.76 to go with a .868 save percentage and 11 shutouts. head coach Krista McKendree added six newcomers in the offseason, including a pair of local signees in Carlie Scales and Olivia Shafer, and a four-star recruit Nicki Baham, who will be part of Evansville’s attacking third. Krista McKendree enters her seventh year as head coach of the University No. 4 seed. Under McKendree’s direction, five Aces earned all-conference of Evansville women’s soccer program in 2014 and has already built an honors that spring, including All-MVC Second Team selections Breanna Beine impressive resume that includes a pair of Missouri Valley Conference and Sam Conrad. Coaching Staff of theY ear awards, two conference championships and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. During the 2012 campaign, McKendree guided the Aces to their second MVC regular-season championship during her tenure, despite the fact that UE was The only All-American in UE women’s soccer history, McKendree served as picked last in the MVC Preseason Poll. After a slow-start to the season, an assistant coach at her alma mater from 2005 through 2007, before McKendree’s squad found its stride in Valley play, as Evansville finished 4-1-1 taking over the reigns of the program in 2008. Her 2008 squad won the in league play to claim the regular-season title. A total of six Aces were MVC regular-season championship, the MVC Tournament title and earned named to All-MVC squads, including a pair of freshmen in Simone Busby and Evansville’s four NCAA Tournament berth. 22 2014 University of Evansville Women’s Soccer KRISTA MCKENDREE left UE to become the head coach at Akron, McKendree was the popular choice to replace him.

As a player, McKendree led Evansville to the NCAA Tournament in 1998, 1999 and 2001, and is regarded as the best defender to ever play for the Purple Aces. In 2006, she was chosen to the MVC Women’s Soccer All-Centennial Team. She was a four-time All-MVC First Team selection and was named the MVC Defensive Player of the Year in 1999, before being selected as the MVC Player of the Year in 2000. McKendree became UE women’s soccer first All-American in 2000, when she was chosen to the NSCAA/adidas Women’s Soccer Division I All-American Third Team.

McKendree was also a member of the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team in 2000 and 2001, in addition to winning three MVC regular-season championships, three MVC Tournament titles and making three trips to the NCAA Tournament. During McKendree’s four years as a player, the Aces posted an overall record of 52-28-7.
