REFEREE RESPECT ETC

As always the match referee is very welcome at Carlisle. Without the referee we would not be able to enjoy the Game. The referee deserves respect at all times and there is no place for any form of abuse to be directed at the referee, either on or off the field. Players regularly make mistakes, and the match official is not perfect and he / she too will not always get it right.

If the referee does make an error of judgement that should never the signal for abuse from a player, coach, official or a spectator.

Remember that, in almost all cases the referee is a volunteer and provides a service to the game so that we can all enjoy it. People wanting to referee are in short supply, and one of the reasons given for the shortage of volunteers is, alleged abuse.

PLEASE RESPECT THE REFEREE AT ALL TIMES. THE REFEREE The playing enclosure is out of bounds at all times except to those authorised to be there by the game regulations. Spectators are asked to remain behind the barriers (where they exist), and where pitches do not have a permanent barrier, you are requested to stand well back from IS AN the touch line. This will allow the touch judge to officiate without hindrance, and also reduce the probability of injury to any player or spectator in the event of a collision! INTEGRAL Whilst people are free to encourage their team it is expected that supporters will use moderate PART OF language so as not to intimidate or offend others. There have been instances, particularly at junior and youth games, where there has been encroachment on the field, or dubious verbal encouragement from parents. This is not a good example to set. Lads and lasses need the OUR freedom to express themselves on the field of play without any undue intimidation from the sidelines. GAME Carlisle RFC will not hesitate to take appropriate action where necessary, Have a great day, RESPECT PLEASE .

This afternoon brings to a close the first half of the league pro- gramme with all other teams now having been played. We move Youth 9 into the Christmas and New Year break with ample time to re- flect on what might have been! No despair though - at this time last year all were sat on the edge of a chair wondering how we were going to get away from the foot of the table. It took Gossip 12 some gritty determination and the lads, encouraged by the coaches ensured safety by picking up the required points, even iff the last day of the season was a little nail biting. We did our part, but relying on other outcomes is not a good scenario. Sponsors 30 Looking at the league this term, it is still impossible to make any predications about the probable final outcome. Any team can beat any other, and some of the so called “banker” results simply have not materialised. Ambition is one thing, but one or two TEAMSHEET 31 clubs who think they have a divine right to advancement have not had it all their own way, and in the final analysis they might just have to wait a little bit longer for the success they crave. Let’s not worry about others, do our own thing in a workmanlike fashion and we will finish in a more than respectable position. Respect Code 32 One thing is certain the final table will have changed look about it. Some simply don’t want to go up. Sad, but true.3 MR PRESIDENT CAPTAIN COMMENTS

The turnaround point in the season, time to reflect! I have had a lot of people and comment on what a better start to the season we have had compared to last season, and about which I have never ques- tioned but could easily do so. There have been games along the way that as a team we have thrown away due to little errors, and it always easy to pick up on the negatives when reflecting back as a player, a team, coach, staff or a supporter, but the success and positives to come from the first half of the season have been unreal and promising. Firstly, beating Kendal to stop their unbeaten run was a huge highlight of the season and my rugby career. The big comeback away at New Brighton showed character and will to come out of that game as victors; and finally the most positive aspect of the sea- son so far , are the seven bonus points, whether that is a four pointer or a losing bonus point. The county are currently updating their player transfer (poaching) policy to make it more suitable for present day needs. It has been in being for some time now but needed refining to reflect modern day needs and to deal with the problem that many clubs suffer - illegal and unwanted approaches to tempt players away on the promise of not insubstantial remuneration that is more than likely unaccounted for!

Given that it is understood that there are no players in the north west at Level 6 and below, then there are still an awful ,lot of brown envelopes in circulation after matches on a Saturday.

Hopefully the revision to the “level transfer” policy might prick a con- science or two - but unlikely!

8 8 MINI & MIDI & YOUTH Tomorrow is the final instalment of fixtures ahead of 2015 at Warwick Road. Our Under 16s take on outfit Fylde who have already taken victories over Keswick and Penrith in the last month. Ben Blain and Matthew Pa- gan's boys will face a tough game but go in confident fol- lowing scoring over 120 points and conceding just 10 in their last two games against Wigton and Tynedale.

Martin Maughan's Under 15s travel South to Barrow to the home of Vickers, or as they are now called, Hawcoat Park, whilst the Under 14s make the short trip down the M6 to Winters Park, Penrith.

The Under 12s head North East to Northern and the Under 1 1 s a r e a t home to Novocastrians.

Finally the Under 10s host Cockermouth.

I would like to take the opportunity to wish all our coaches, volunteers and admin staff a very merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I am sure your continued efforts will ensure the youth system at Warwick Road continues to thrive into 2015 and beyond. Ben Blain JUST A REMINDER FOR ALL YOUTH AND JUNIOR COACHES AND TEAM OFFICIALS Please make sure that on match days that the temporary fencing that has been provided is used as previously re- quested. Someone should be appointed as your safety steward, and the parental advice signs should be dis- played at each entrance to the pitches - one at the entry between the squash club and pitch one; the other at the entry between pitches one and three. There was large turn out to bid farewell to the 81 year old who was probably best known for his refereeing exploits. BEN BLAIN has recently been pro- moted to the RFU National Referee Panel.

COLTS CORNER The Colts, having been vanquished by Wharfedale in the National Colts Cup, have now been drawn at home in the next round of the Plate and will play the winners of the Pocklington v Tigers contest. After a break, the colts returned to league competition last weekend at Mowden Park. The two teams are arguably the strongest in the under 18 league. The opening half was owned by the homesters who racked up 19 points in the opening half hour. After a re- group at the break, Carlisle took the second period, but not quite enough to take the game that ended 19 pts to 12 pts, and the lads are looking forward to the return match in January. Tomorrow the colts entertain Dumfries in a friendly at 1.15 pm. It’s a shame that some clubs in the colts league have de- termined themselves as unreliable, and that is not good for those teams that give their all, and with cancellation of fixtures often at the last minute, it causes not a little disappointment and inconvenience.

COUGARS CORNER Cougars triumph over table topping Northwich Top of the league Northwich made the journey up the m6 this week, to face a Carlisle side who were determined to defend their perfect home record and turn around the result from the away fixture earlier in the season. To the relief of both teams the weather improved as kick off approached and a morning of rain, snow and sleet gave way to a bright but cold afternoon. Playing the conditions the Cougars kept the ball tight and pressurised the opposition into turning over the ball. With ball in hand the Cougars played the phases with composition before spinning the ball out to the backs. Who made inroads up the park. This pressure paid off with the home sides forwards getting three tries on the board in the first 20 minutes, with Lucy Meadley and Sue Bird probing around the fringes and scoring from close range. The third was a well set up driving maul set up from a line out which Steph Musgrave finished well. The Cougars settled into their game plan and got another two tries before half time, with Meadley getting her second, and full back Bethan Lloyd outpacing the opposition and running in another score out wide. The second half started well for the Cougars securing the ball from kick off, and the boot of fly halfLisa Ritchie forced the visitors back into their own half. Next on the score sheet was Hannah Sherlockpowering over in the corner. Unfortunately Sherlock then had to leave the pitch due to injury which led to a reshuffle moving number 8 Holly Free- stone into the centres, and bringing Jasmine Clark into the back row, this change did not effect the flow with both players slotting in well. The visitors did pick up their game and stemmed the flow of tries, with ball in hand they were making inroads and forcing Carlisle to defend hard across the park. The Cougars dug deep and kept the Northwich side out. After forcing their way back up the park, and stealing opposition ball in the line out, Sue Bird powered over the line for her second try. Injury forced the visitors down to 14 players, and the final two tries were once again scored by the backs punching through the opposition with fly half Ritchie getting on the score sheet with a try, and Lloyd getting her second of the game in the final play. Final score 49-0 and the Cougars now look to keep their home record intact forward to the next week against old rivals to finish off the year. Kick off 2pm all support welcome.

(£50 +VAT). If you would like to sponsor in the future, please give Tiff a call on the number below. Special thanks for sponsoring the match ball this afternoon to: DAVID RAWLING

Interested in sponsoring a match or a match ball...... please speak to John Tiffen or give him a call on 01228 513383.

MAIN MATCH SPONSOR

During the season, match day sponsorship is invaluable to the club, and to those individuals, companies and organisations who choose to support rugby in this way, we offer our sincere thanks. Your help to deliver rugby in our com- munity is commendable, helping to raise the profile of Carlisle RFC.

Thank you very much for opting to sponsor the game today, and we trust that

you, your colleagues, friends and guests, will have an enjoyable afternoon with us. Doubtless, friendships old and new will be rekindled or developed over a pint or two; and your support from the touchline for the team will be appreci-

ated by the lads and the coaching staff.

Again, our appreciation for your support and if you know anyone who may like

to follow your example, then please point them in the right direction! CO CO LTD
