CONTACT: Annina Launis, [email protected] (2020 onwards: [email protected]) 1 ABSTRACT Micarea is a lichenized genus in the family Pilocarpaceae (Ascomycota). We studied the phylogeny and reassessed the current taxonomy of the M. prasina group. We focused especially on the taxonomic questions concerning the type species M. prasina and, furthermore, challenges concerning type specimens that are too old for successful DNA barcoding and molecular studies. The phylogeny was reconstructed using nuc rDNA internal transcribed spacer region (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2), mito rDNA small subunit (mtSSU) and replication licensing factor MCM7 gene from 31 species. Fifty-six new sequences were generated. The data was analyzed using maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood methods. The results revealed four undescribed, well- supported lineages. -

The lichen genus Peltigera is represented in Papua New Guinea by 15 species, including 6 described as new for science: P. cichoracea, P. didactyla, P. dolichorhiza, P. erioderma, P. extenuata, P. fimbriata sp. nov., P. granulosa sp. nov., P. koponenii sp. nov., P. montis-wilhelmii sp. nov., P. nana, P. oceanica, P. papuana sp. nov., P. sumatrana, P. ulcerata, and P. weberi sp. nov. Peltigera macra and P. tereziana var. philippinensis are reduced to synonymy with P. nana, whereas P. melanocoma is maintained as a species distinct from P. nana pending further studies. The status of several putative taxa referred to P. dolichorhiza s. lat. in the Sect. Polydactylon remains to be studied on a wider geographical scale and in the context of P. dolichorhiza and P. neopolydactyla. The phylogenetic affinities of all but one regional species (P. extenuata) are studied based on inferences from ITS (nrDNA) sequence data, in the context of a broad taxonomic sampling within the genus. -

Nelsen, [email protected] Abstract: We present a revised phylogeny of lichenised Dothideomyceta (Arthoniomycetes and Dothideomycetes) based on a combined data set of nuclear large subunit (nuLSU) and mitochondrial small subunit (mtSSU) rDNA data. Dothideomyceta is supported as monophyletic with monophyletic classes Arthoniomycetes and Dothideomycetes; the latter, however, lacking support in this study. The phylogeny of lichenised Arthoniomycetes supports the current division into three families: Chrysothrichaceae (Chrysothrix), Arthoniaceae (Arthonia s. l., Cryptothecia, Herpothallon), and Roccellaceae (Chiodecton, Combea, Dendrographa, Dichosporidium, Enterographa, Erythrodecton, Lecanactis, Opegrapha, Roccella, Roccellographa, Schismatomma, Simonyella). The widespread and common Arthonia caesia is strongly supported as a (non-pigmented) member of Chrysothrix. Monoblastiaceae, Strigulaceae, and Trypetheliaceae are recovered as unrelated, monophyletic clades within Dothideomycetes. Also, the genera Arthopyrenia (Arthopyreniaceae) and Cystocoleus and Racodium (Capnodiales) are confirmed asDothideomycetes but unrelated to each other. -

Some Peltigericolous Microlichens from Southern Poland

The list includes: Absconditella delutula, Agonimia vouauxii, Bacidia pycnidiata (for the first time as a lichenicolous lichen), Bacidina chloroticula, Placynthiella dasea, Scutula sp., Steinia geophana, Thelocarpon epibolum, Vezdaea aestivalis and V. retigera. Notes on the taxonomy, ecology and distribution of each species are briefly provided and Polish samples discussed. Keywords: Ascomycota, ecology, lichenized fungi, lichenicolous lichens, post-industrial region Introduction Lichenicolus fungi growing on representatives of the genus Peltigera were investigated many times (e.g. ALSTRUP and HAWKSWORTH 1990, KÜMMERLING and ALSTRUP 1992, MIDLIKOWSKA and ALSTRUP 1995, HAWKSWORTH and MIDLIKOWSKA 1997, MARTÍNEZ and HAFELLNER 1998, MARTÍNEZ 1999, KOCOURKOVÁ 2000, CZYòEWSKA and KUKWA 2009, CANDAN et al. 2010, PUOLASMAA et al. 2012). The genus Peltigera, with members usually forming large lichen thalli with cyanobacteria (e.g. Nostoc spp.), is widely considered one of these lichen hosts that are inhabited by the highest number of fungal specialists (HAWKS- WORTH and MIDLIKOWSKA 1997). Data on lichenicolous lichens and 'four-biont symbioses' are rare (HAWKSWORTH 1988, CZARNOTA 2009). In Poland lichenicolous lichens are still insufficiently known, but recently some of them have been included within the national list of lichenicolous fungi (CZYòEWSKA and KUKWA 2009). -

LENDEMER , CHRIS LEWIS , ABSTRACT. – An inventory of the lichens of Bruce Peninsula National Park and Fathom Five National Marine Park in the Georgian Bay area of southern Ontario was carried out by 30 lichenologists participating in the 2008 Tuckerman Workshop. A list of 370 species of lichens, related fungi and lichenicolous fungi was compiled, documenting that the parks are remarkably rich in lichens, including many rarities. Following the park inventory, an additional 21 lichens from Bruce County are listed based on the published literature and other recent collections. Twelve lichens, one related fungus and nine lichenicolous fungi are additions to the Canadian lichen flora: Acarospora moenium, Bagliettoa baldensis, Biatora ocelliformis, Caloplaca flavocitrina, Clavascidium umbrinum, Dermatocarpon dolomiticum, D. muhlenbergii, Heppia adglutinata, Lecania cuprea, Opegrapha mougeotii, Thelidium minutulum, Heteroplacidium compactum; Mycoglaena myricae; Capronia peltigerae, Lichenoconium erodens, Muellerella hospitans, M. ventosicola, Phaeopyxis punctum, Phoma cladoniicola, Plectocarpon cladoniae, Polycoccum minutulum, Tremella candelariellae. An Inventory of Fungal Diversity in Ohio Research Thesis Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation with research distinction in the undergraduate colleges of The Ohio State University by Django Grootmyers The Ohio State University April 2021 1 ABSTRACT Fungi are a large and diverse group of eukaryotic organisms that play important roles in nutrient cycling in ecosystems worldwide. Fungi are poorly documented compared to plants in Ohio despite 197 years of collecting activity, and an attempt to compile all the species of fungi known from Ohio has not been completed since 1894. This paper compiles the species of fungi currently known from Ohio based on vouchered fungal collections available in digitized form at the Mycology Collections Portal (MyCoPortal) and other online collections databases and new collections by the author. All groups of fungi are treated, including lichens and microfungi. 69,795 total records of Ohio fungi were processed, resulting in a list of 4,865 total species-level taxa. 250 of these taxa are newly reported from Ohio in this work. 229 of the taxa known from Ohio are species that were originally described from Ohio. A number of potentially novel fungal species were discovered over the course of this study and will be described in future publications. The insights gained from this work will be useful in facilitating future research on Ohio fungi, developing more comprehensive and modern guides to Ohio fungi, and beginning to investigate the possibility of fungal conservation in Ohio.
