Ir’ I Abstract

Al1 known Palaearctic species of ApImiiosoitirr Becker are reviewed. Taxononiy and niorphological variation are discussed. Notes on ecology and distribution are given kvhere these are knoivn. Eighteen species are described as new: barraki, bicnrinn- rioti, egregiiim, fnlciferiini, forcipnriini, grisescois. inipirdens, necopimrirni, uigricorrda, iiigrimi, occidenrnlis, piligeririli, prosi- tfiiini, sciirellnris, sericoiidn, spitiii-enrris. rriserirni and i.erecirndiriti. The males of fi\.e otlier species are described and’or illu- strated uhere this \vas not previously available: nmiiilnritrii Lyneborg. oppro.ui/tinrirni Becker, Iinckniririi Lyneborg. nigrohirfiiui Hendel and irnicolor Hendel. Two species are synonymised: grncciim Ebejer = meliretisis Ebejer. and ~rocknti~ernfiiniEbejer = collini Lyneborg. The males of Iiiingririciim Soós. lntifrons (Loetv) and sertiico/isors Czeriiy reniain unknown. The types of lnrifroris and semiconsors are redescribed and a Iectotype is designated for semicotisors. A key for the identification of adults of both sexes is provided.

Kotes on tlie use of tliis iiey Sonie species are knoivn only froni one ses and Ivhere this is the feniale. ideiitification remains difficult. in sonie cases impos- sible. Howwr. siich a tason has still bsen keyed out to the appropriate couplet and written in brackets with a -?" sign precediiig it. \i,'Iiere species show niarked colour variation such that confusion may arise, th2y have heen keyed out more ttian once. Feniales of closely related species. which are particularly difficiilt to separate reliably. are grouped together. The teriii "process" is used in the keg to include surstyli, gonostyli and paraphallic projections of undetermined orisin.
