  • Establishing a Chronology for Holocene Climate and Environmental Change from Mleiha, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates Adrian G
Establishing a chronology for Holocene climate and environmental change from Mleiha, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates Adrian G. Parker, Frank Preusser, Joachim Eberle, Sabah Jasim and Hans-Peter Uerpmann Adrian Parker, Department of Social Sciences, Oxford Brookes University, Oxon, OX3 0BP Email: [email protected] The Holocene epoch has also been punctuated by a series of abrupt climatic events with several phases of hyper-aridity, which have coincided with changes observed in the archaeological record (Parker et al., 2006; Preston et al., 2012). To date, only a few fluvial or lacustrine records covering the early to mid-Holocene period from the region have been studied. Little or no information is available for the late Holocene from these geoarchive types (Parker and Goudie, 2008). The purpose of this ongoing study is to analyse sediments from geoarchives from the interior of SE Arabia in order to determine and build the past climatic context of the area against which the archaeology can be set. Key methods are being used to understand how changes in rainfall and aridity have varied over the time using physical, chemical and biological analyses. The Mleiha region of Sharjah Emirate provides a unique record for human occupation spanning the last 125,000 years from the Palaeolithic through to the modern day (Armitage et al., 2011; Uerpmann et al., 2013; Mouton, 1999). The Jebel Faya anticline forms a narrow, discontinuous bedrock ridge, which extends approximately 30 km from Jebel Buhais in the south, through Jabel Faya, Jebel Mleiha to Sha’biyyat As Saman, a few kilometres south-west of Dhaid.

  • Before the Emirates: an Archaeological and Historical Account of Developments in the Region C
Before the Emirates: an Archaeological and Historical Account of Developments in the Region c. 5000 BC to 676 AD D.T. Potts Introduction In a little more than 40 years the territory of the former Trucial States and modern United Arab Emirates (UAE) has gone from being a blank on the archaeological map of Western Asia to being one of the most intensively studied regions in the entire area. The present chapter seeks to synthesize the data currently available which shed light on the lifestyles, industries and foreign relations of the earliest inhabitants of the UAE. Climate and Environment Within the confines of a relatively narrow area, the UAE straddles five different topographic zones. Moving from west to east, these are (1) the sandy Gulf coast and its intermittent sabkha; (2) the desert foreland; (3) the gravel plains of the interior; (4) the Hajar mountain range; and (5) the eastern mountain piedmont and coastal plain which represents the northern extension of the Batinah of Oman. Each of these zones is characterized by a wide range of exploitable natural resources (Table 1) capable of sustaining human groups practising a variety of different subsistence strategies, such as hunting, horticulture, agriculture and pastoralism. Tables 2–6 summarize the chronological distribution of those terrestrial faunal, avifaunal, floral, marine, and molluscan species which we know to have been exploited in antiquity, based on the study of faunal and botanical remains from excavated archaeological sites in the UAE. Unfortunately, at the time of writing the number of sites from which the inventories of faunal and botanical remains have been published remains minimal.

AN OVERVIEW AND CHECKLIST OF THE NATIVE AND ALIEN HERPETOFAUNA OF THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES 1 1 2 PRITPAL S. SOORAE , MYYAS AL QUARQAZ , AND ANDREW S. GARDNER 1Environment Agency-ABU DHABI, P.O. Box 45553, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, e-mail: [email protected] 2Natural Science and Public Health, College of Arts and Sciences, Zayed University, P.O. Box 4783, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates Abstract.—This paper provides an updated checklist of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) native and alien herpetofauna. The UAE, while largely a desert country with a hyper-arid climate, also has a range of more mesic habitats such as islands, mountains, and wadis. As such it has a diverse native herpetofauna of at least 72 species as follows: two amphibian species (Bufonidae), five marine turtle species (Cheloniidae [four] and Dermochelyidae [one]), 42 lizard species (Agamidae [six], Gekkonidae [19], Lacertidae [10], Scincidae [six], and Varanidae [one]), a single amphisbaenian, and 22 snake species (Leptotyphlopidae [one], Boidae [one], Colubridae [seven], Hydrophiidae [nine], and Viperidae [four]). Additionally, we recorded at least eight alien species, although only the Brahminy Blind Snake (Ramphotyplops braminus) appears to have become naturalized. We also list legislation and international conventions pertinent to the herpetofauna. • Israel and the Uae: an Historic Opportunity
ISRAEL AND THE UAE: AN HISTORIC OPPORTUNITY September 2020 www.bclplaw.com On 28 August 2020, President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa, President of the United Arab Emirates (the UAE), issued Federal Decree Law Number 4 of 2020, abolishing a ban on business and trade dealings with Israel that had stood since 1972. In doing so, the UAE has become the first Gulf nation to normalise its relations with Israel and only the third Arab nation to do so, alongside Egypt and Jordan. Law Number 4 follows the Abraham Accord announced only a few weeks ago and the speed with which relations have thawed has surprised and delighted businesspeople in both jurisdictions: Businesses in the UAE can now enter openly into direct commercial agreements with their Israeli counterparts, to import, exchange, possess and trade in Israeli products in the UAE and to trade in them. The UAE: An Overview The UAE is a federation comprised of seven Emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Ajman and Fujairah. It is one of the six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council (the GCC), alongside Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner LLP 01 Although dwarfed by its neighbour, Saudi Arabia, the UAE is nevertheless considered an economic powerhouse in the Gulf region. Its diversification away from a hydro-carbon based economy was deliberate, well-structured and has been ongoing for decades. By leveraging its strategic location between East and West and focussing on logistics (for example, the development of free zone ports and the growth of its two principal airlines, Etihad and Emirates) coupled with a progressive approach to foreign investment and the development of an extensive double taxation treaty regime, the UAE is now firmly established as a world- class hub for international commerce.

Although large areas of the country are covered in Quaternary sediments. e bedrock geology is well exposed in the Hajar Mountains and the Musandam Peninsula of the eastern UAE, and along the southern side of the Arabian Gulf west of Abu Dhabi. e geology of the Emirates can be divided into ten main components: (1) e Late Cretaceous UAE-Oman ophiolite; (2) A Middle Permian to Upper Cretaceous carbonate platform sequence, exposed in the northern UAE (the Hajar Supergroup); (3) A deformed sequence of thin limestone’s and associated deepwater sediments, with volcanic rocks and mélanges, which occurs in the Dibba and Hatta Zones; Geological map of the UAE (Scale 1:500 000) 1 (4) A ploydeformed sequence of metamorphic rocks, seen in the Masafi – Ismah and Bani Hamid areas; (5) A younger, Late Cretaceous to Palaeogene cover sequence exposed in a foreland basin along the western edge of the Hajar Mountains; (6) An extensive suite of Quaternary fluvial gravels and coalesced alluvial fans extending out from the Hajar Mountains; (7) A sequence of Late Miocene sedimentary rocks exposed in the western Emirates; (8) A number of salt domes forming islands in the Arabian Gulf, characterised by complex dissolution breccias with a varied clast suite of mainly Neoproterozoic (Ediacaran) sedimentary and volcanic rocks; (9) A suite of Holocene marine and near-shore carbonate and evaporate deposits along the southern side of the Arabian Gulf forming the classic Abu Dhabi sabkhas and Extensive Quaternary to recent aeolian sand dunes which underlie the bulk of Abu Dhabi Emirate.

  • New Mangrove Ecosystem Data Along the UAE Coast Using Remote Sensing A
New mangrove ecosystem data along the UAE coast using remote sensing A. Al Habshi,1 T. Youssef, 2,∗ M. Aizpuru, and F. Blasco3 1Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Oil Operations (ADCO), PO Box 270, Abu Dhabi, UAE 2Biological Department, UAE University, PO Box 17551, Al Ain, UAE 3Laboratoire d’Ecologie Terrestre, CNRS/Universit´eToulouse III, France ∗Corresponding author: [email protected] Characteristics of mangrove communities along the Gulf Coast of the UAE were explored using high- resolution satellite data Terra ASTER imageries in the common visible and near infra-red bands. Mangrove stands in three geographically distinctive sites, Khor Kalba, Khor Umm Al-Quwain and Al Dabbiya, were studied through spatial data and ground verification surveys. Mangroves in the UAE appear in patchy and scattered patterns, occupying about 40 km2 of the coastal zone, half of which are located in Abu Dhabi in sheltered lagoons. The remaining areas are linear communities fringing tidal waterways distributed along intertidal zones. Their distribution is limited however, by aridity and site topography. Despite similarities in substrate conditions, differences in climatic and vegetation characteristics be- tween the three sites indicate that growth conditions seem to be more favourable at Khor Kalba with the higher winter temperatures and higher annual rainfalls. Nine main units were recognized on the colour composite image of the Terra ASTER space data; dense vegetation, scattered vegetation, algal deposits, dry sand, sabkhas, settlements, recent deposits and turbid water, shallow water and deep water. Radiance did not allow for the separation of mangrove areas from inland vegetation through the supervised classification. Confusion was also encountered between different soil classes (e.g.

  • United Arab Emirates & Oman
Big Five Presents United Arab Emirates & Oman UAE & Oman offer an unexpected cornucopia of contrasts that when taken together mean an unforgettable vacation experience. From the dazzling gem of sophistication that is Dubai, to the cosmopolitan capital city of Abu Dhabi, to Umm al-Qaiwain’s long sweeps of beautiful beaches, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has quickly become a star in the realm of luxury destinations. Seven emirates – Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Qaiwain, Ras al-Khaimah and Fujairah – joined together in 1971 to form a constitutional federation. Although most of the country is desert, it still offers vividly contrasting landscapes, from the Empty Quarter, the largest sand desert in the world, to lush oases, rocky mountains and fertile plains. UAE occupies a large sweep of land along the southeastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, with Qatar to the west, Saudi Arabia to the south and west, and Oman to the north and east. The capital and the largest city of the federation, Abu Dhabi, is located in the emirate of the same name. Although UAE is known widely for its oil, wealth, shopping and sophistication, the country also has a quieter side that can be experienced in the desert of the Bedouin or the centuries-old neighborhoods, mosques and markets of Dubai. The cultural capital of the country is Sharjah, where visitors gain a glimpse of the past and discover opportunities for authentic interactions with people from fish markets to date souqs. The Sultanate of Oman on the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula shares a border with the UAE as well as Saudi Arabia and Yemen to the southwest.
