Certain taxonomic changes made by Cheke & Mann (2001) are here explained and justified. Dicaeum haematostictum Sharpe, 1876, is split from D. australe (Hermann, 1783). D. aeruginosum Bourns & Worcester, 1894 is merged into D. agile (Tickell, 1833). The genus Chalcoparia Cabanis, 1851, is re-estab- lished for (Motacilla) singalensis Gmelin, 1788. The taxon Leptocoma sperata marinduquensis (duPont, 1971), is shown to be based on a specimen of Aethopyga siparaja magnifica Sharpe, 1876. Aethopyga vigor- sii (Sykes, 1832) is split from A. siparaja (Raffles, 1822). Cheke & Mann (op. cit.) mistakenly omitted two forms, Anthreptes malacensis erixanthus Oberholser, 1932 and Arachnothera longirostra zarhina Ober- holser, 1912. Five subspecies are removed from Aethopyga shelleyi Sharpe, 1876 to create the polytypic A. bella, Tweeddale, 1877. The Arachnothera affinis (Horsfield, 1822)/modesta (Eyton, 1839)/everetti (Sharpe, 1893) complex is re-evaluated in the light of the revision by Davison in Smythies (1999). Introduction In a recent publication (Cheke & Mann, 2001) some taxonomic changes were made to members of this family occurring in Asia. -

Email: [email protected] Received 9 July 2007; accepted 5 February 2008 Abstract: Some feeding and breeding activities of Purple Sunbird Nectarinia asiatica brevirostris have been studied in five localities in Bandar Abbas, southern Iran from June 2002 to June 2004 on monthly bases. According to 507 timed feeding observations, Purple Sunbirds feed on flowers’ nectar (97%) and on fruits’ nectar (3%). The nectar of the Chinese hibiscus Hibiscus rosa-chinensis flowers was the favorite food (56%). Red flowers seem to be attractive. The breeding season is late autumn and early winter, where flowers are abundant and temperate season has begun in the area. Nesting started in November, 2–3 eggs being laid in December and hatching occurring after 15–17 days of incubation. Only the females built nests and incubated eggs, while males assisted in feeding nestlings. Purple Sunbirds used 16 species of plants of which they fed and five species for nesting. The gum acacia tree Acacia nilotica is particularly suitable: it provides cover, is a source of food is ideal for nesting, and so it plays an important role in dispersion of this sunbird species in the area. -

WILLIAMS The ,Shining Sunbird (Cinnyris habessinicus Hemprich and Ehrenberg) has a com- paratively restricted distribution in the northeastern part of the Ethiopian region. It occurs sporadically from the northern districts of Kenya Colony and northeastern Uganda northward to Saudi Arabia, but it apparently is absent from the highlands of Ethiopia (Abyssinia) above 5000 feet. The adult male is one of the most brightly col- ored African sunbirds, the upper parts and throat being brilliant metallic green, often with a golden sheen on the mantle, and the crown violet or blue. Across the breast is a bright red band, varying in width, depth of color, and brilliance in the various races, bordered on each side by yellow pectoral tufts; the abdomen is black. The female is drab gray or brown and exhibits a well-marked color cline, the most southerly birds being pale and those to the northward becoming gradually darker and terminating with the blackish-brown female of the most northerly subspecies. In the present study I am retaining, with some reluctance, the genus Cinnyris for the speciesunder review. I agree in the main with Delacour’s treatment of the group in his paper ( 1944) “A Review of the Family Nectariniidae (Sunbirds) ” and admit that the genus Nectarinia, in its old, restricted sense, based upon the length of the central pair of rectrices in the adult male, is derived from a number of different stocks and is ur+ sound. -

Johnson School of Biological and Conservation Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg, Private Bag X01, Scottsville 3209, South Africa Received 8 September 2009; received in revised form 16 February 2010; accepted 4 March 2010 Abstract Most of the species in the large African genus Kniphofia have floral traits that conform to the bird pollination syndrome, however there has been very little empirical work to confirm that birds are effective pollinators of Kniphofia species. From selective exclusion experiments, behavioural observations and pollen load analyses, we identified Amethyst Sunbirds (Chalcomitra amethystina) and Malachite Sunbirds (Nectarinia famosa) as the primary pollinators in two populations of Kniphofia laxiflora, with bees playing a smaller role. Bird visitors obtain moderate volumes (∼9 µl) of relatively concentrated (∼15%) hexose-rich nectar in the flowers. This species is shown to be genetically self- incompatible, and thus reliant on pollinator visits for seed set. Although mountain pride butterflies (Aeropetes tulbaghia) have been identified as important pollinators of this species at two other populations, they did not occur at the two populations we studied. © 2010 SAAB. GHANA MEGA Rockfowl & Upper Guinea Specials th st 29 November to 21 December 2011 (23 days) White-necked Rockfowl by Adam Riley Trip Report compiled by Tour Leader David Hoddinott RBT Ghana Mega Trip Report December 2011 2 Trip Summary Our record breaking trip total of 505 species in 23 days reflects the immense birding potential of this fabulous African nation. Whilst the focus of the tour was certainly the rich assemblage of Upper Guinea specialties, we did not neglect the interesting diversity of mammals. Participants were treated to an astonishing 9 Upper Guinea endemics and an array of near-endemics and rare, elusive, localized and stunning species. These included the secretive and rarely seen White-breasted Guineafowl, Ahanta Francolin, Hartlaub’s Duck, Black Stork, mantling Black Heron, Dwarf Bittern, Bat Hawk, Beaudouin’s Snake Eagle, Congo Serpent Eagle, the scarce Long-tailed Hawk, splendid Fox Kestrel, African Finfoot, Nkulengu Rail, African Crake, Forbes’s Plover, a vagrant American Golden Plover, the mesmerising Egyptian Plover, vagrant Buff-breasted Sandpiper, Four-banded Sandgrouse, Black-collared Lovebird, Great Blue Turaco, Black-throated Coucal, accipiter like Thick- billed and splendid Yellow-throated Cuckoos, Olive and Dusky Long-tailed Cuckoos (amongst 16 cuckoo species!), Fraser’s and Akun Eagle-Owls, Rufous Fishing Owl, Red-chested Owlet, Black- shouldered, Plain and Standard-winged Nightjars, Black Spinetail, Bates’s Swift, Narina Trogon, Blue-bellied Roller, Chocolate-backed and White-bellied Kingfishers, Blue-moustached, -

Larsen Loveridges Sunbird Nectarinia loveridgei is endemic to the Uluguru Mountains (06°4307°15S, 37°3237°51E) (BirdLife International 2003), which are part of the Eastern Arc Mountains in Tanzania (Lovett & Wasser 1993). The Ulugurus are a priority site for conservation of vertebrate species and are considered the third most important area in East Africa for the conservation of forest birds (Burgess et al. 1998). The Ulugurus hold two strictly-endemic bird species, five endemic subspecies and additionally 12 range-restricted species (Stattersfield et al. 1998, BirdLife International 2003). Six of these species are considered to be globally threatened (BirdLife International 2004a). Loveridges Sunbird seems to be in no immediate danger of extinction and is currently considered of Least Concern (BirdLife International 2004b). While the total population has recently been estimated between 21 000 and 166 000 individuals, the persistence of Loveridges Sunbird depends upon the conservation of the Uluguru Mountain Forest Reserves (Tøttrup et al. 2004). Loveridges Sunbird was first described by Hartert (1922) with further notes by Williams (1950, 1951) and Stuart & van der Willigen (1980). Here we present the first description of the egg and additional information on the biology of Loveridges Sunbird based on observations collected during three months of fieldwork from 29 August to 28 November 2000. Breeding biology Between 1 September and 5 October 2000 five nests containing eggs or nestlings and two newly-built nests were found. -

Summary Week 1 – Arrived in Monrovia on 29 May and met with Forestry Development Authority (FDA) staff and our two counterpart hosts, Theo Freeman and Morris Kamara, heads of the Wildlife Conservation and Protected Area Management and Protected Area Management respectively. Bocage's Sunbird Nectarinia Bocagii—An Angolan Near-Endemic
Little-known African bird: Bocage’s Sunbird Nectarinia bocagii—an Angolan near-endemic Michael S. L. Millsa,b O pouco conhecido beija-flor de Bocage Nectarinia bocagii: uma espécie quase endémica de Angola. O beija-flor de Bocage Nectarinia bocagii é uma espécie pouco conhecida e praticamente endémica da cintura de matas de Brachystegia do planalto angolano. Com base em 42 especímenes angolanas que consegui localizar, a sua distribuição em Angola está mais ou menos restrita ao planalto ocidental entre os 1.420 e os 1.770 m de altitude. No entanto existem três registos de localidades afastadas desta faixa, a norte e a este, e a mais baixas altitudes (1.150–1.260 m), que sugerem que a sua distribuição possa ser muito mais ampla. A espécie não está bem representada nos guias de campo e outros livros; é preciso cuidado especial para a não confundir com a sub-espécie gadowi do beija-flor-bronzeado N. kilimensis com que co-ocorre. O beija-flor de Bocage apresenta um brilho azul-púrpura conspícuo sobre a sua cabeça e costas, distinto do brilho verde-bronzeado do beija-flor-bronzeado. Em certas condições de luz, ambas as espécies parecem pretas. O beija-flor de Bocage tem preferência por zonas abertas ao longo dos rios que atravessam matas de Brachystegia e alimenta-se de néctar e invertebrados. Tanto o beija-flor-bronzeado como o beija-flor- acobreado Cinnyris cupreus podem ocorrer no mesmo habitat dentro da área de distribuição do beija-flor de Bocage. Summary. The little-known Bocage’s Sunbird Nectarinia bocagii is near-endemic to the Brachystegia woodland belt of the Angolan plateau.
