RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION BY: Manabu Kawakatsu DATE OF COMPLETION: 01/08/2001 ©**** 2 PREFACE: The National Library of Australia (NLA) has very large holdings of Asian material, in English, in Asian languages, and in Asian scripts. The ASIAN ACCOUNTS OF AUSTRALIA project received resources in 2000-2002 from the Australian Research Council and the NLA to examine this collection of ‘Australiana’ in Chinese and Japanese. A pilot project in 1999 had identified the most promising material as being in monographs and periodicals in both languages and, in the case of Chinese, in both traditional and simplified characters. In order further to narrow the amount of material to be examined to fit within the resources of the project, researchers were asked to concentrate on monographs and periodical articles dealing with Australia in the following categories: • Australia as a place of settlement • Australia as exotic • Australia as a model • Australia/Asia geopolitical commentary • Culture, both high and low • Economics, trade and industrial relations • Indigenous Australia • Politics • Tourism • One Nation and Pauline Hanson • An Australian republic • Sydney Olympic games The material covered was divided chronologically as follows: Chinese: Periodicals (simplified characters) 1995-2001 (traditional characters) 1986-2000 Monographs (simplified characters) 1973-1999 (traditional characters) 1947-2000 Japanese: Periodicals (general) 1987-2001 (Nichigo Press) 1995-2000 Monographs 1881-1979 Monographs 1980-2001 Researchers made brief synopses of material in these categories and periodicals, which are attached to their bibliographical details. -

Much loved My Kitchen Rules Greek twins Helena and Vikki Moursellas will be hosting the Procal Greek Kitchen across the weekend. The sisters who are now based in Sydney have been working hard since their time on the television cooking show in 2014, releasing their first cook book Taking You Home and opening their own Greek and modern Australian restaurant at Sydney’s Civic Hotel, Twofold, last year. -

In the Australian context, a rising number of alcohol and drug-related incidents in and around these settings have resulted in a renewed focus on how these negative outcomes can be more effectively controlled. In order to aid those charged with the task of addressing this matter— event and venue managers, police, security firms, alcohol and drug regulatory bodies, and govern- ments at all levels—this article seeks to identify those variables with the potential to impact this management issue. Further, it aims to provide the previously identified stakeholders with a deeper appreciation of the raft of practices that are currently in use, and potentially available to them, as they build responses to this challenge at the individual state, precinct, venue, or event level. The research approach used involved an extensive literature review and a series of in-depth interviews with key stakeholders across three states—New South Wales, Victoria, and Western Australia. Accepted draft One Saturday afternoon in the bedroom of the purpose-built international student apartment in Carlton, Melbourne that she shares with three Chinese classmates, 20-year old Ying, an Arts student from Hebei Province, connects via her laptop to a popular media download site based in China. While downloading several recent movies and TV series episodes (from China, Thailand and Hollywood), Ying opens up her QQ account and makes a video call to her parents back home. Speaking with her mother, she catches up on the latest news and gossip from her family and hometown. Ying then posts a comment on an ex-schoolmate’s status update on WeChat (the Chinese WhatsApp-style platform): ‘Nice pic! You and your BF are such a cute couple, haha. Miss you. Message me!’ She then scans a favourite gossip account to catch up on celebrity news from China. Once Ying’s downloads are complete, she spends the rest of the afternoon immersed in the latest episodes of the Chinese TV comedy series that screened back home the previous week. Yaqi, a 20-year-old from Liaoning Province, sits by the window on a suburban train travelling from the leafy eastern suburb of Camberwell, where she lives in a homestay, to Melbourne’s Central Business District, where she studies actuarial studies. Yaqi is engrossed in the screen of her smartphone, where she scrolls through recent posts on her Weibo feed (the Chinese Twitter-like platform), catching up on the details of a recent political scandal involving a prominent member of the Chinese Communist Party. -

BRIEN AND MCALLISTER — “SUNSHINE HAS A TASTE, YOU KNOW” “SUNSHINE HAS A TASTE, YOU KNOW” Using regional food memoirs to develop values-based food practices Donna Lee Brien Central Queensland University Margaret McAllister Central Queensland University Abstract Alongside providing a source of entertainment, the growth in food media of all kinds reflects a genuine consumer interest in knowing more about food. While there is culinary information available that serves to educate in relation to food-related practices (shopping, food preparation, cooking, eating out) in ways that can serve to build confidence and enthusiasm, we propose that, in order for new food practices to be not only adopted, but sustained, consumers need to hone and develop personal values that will complement their technical and practical knowledge. This is the marrying of evidence-based and values-based practice that makes for sustained change in personal habits and practices (Fulford 2008). This, we propose, can activate consumers to develop and embed the kind of learning that reinforces a belief in the need to be an ‘authentic consumer’. It follows that an authentic food consumer is engaged with their local food systems and aware of the challenges that confront these systems. -

Nowra CBD Revitalisation Strategy Committee 28 July 2016 - Item 1 Attachment “A” Extract, Illawarra-Shoalhaven Regional Plan ACTION 1.3.1 Renew and revitalise Nowra Centre by coordinating State agency input into precinct planning and reviewing capacity for expanded health-related uses Nowra Centre is the business, retail and services hub of the Shoalhaven. It has retail and commercial offerings, civic and government services catering for the local community, and tourism functions. The Nowra Centre supports 9,200 jobs, concentrated in health care (2,600 jobs), retail (1,650) and public administration (1,100). Major employers include Shoalhaven City Council and the Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital. Planning for the growth of the health care sector in Nowra will help to diversify and strengthen the Centre. Shoalhaven City Council is already working to renew and revitalise the Centre to encourage new business opportunities through the: • CBD Urban Design Masterplan; • Nowra CBD height and floor space ratio planning controls; and • Nowra CBD Revitalisation Strategy. The priorities are to increase public transport use, better integrate walkways and cycleways, improve pedestrian connections across the highway, and better integrate recreational uses around the Shoalhaven River and the commercial activity in the Centre. As Nowra Centre grows it will be important to coordinate local and State infrastructure. The NSW Government will: • coordinate State agency input into precinct planning activities; and • identify Shoalhaven District Memorial Hospital’s capacity for growth, and consider opportunities to accommodate future expansion. Major breakthrough for Seven with US commission for My Kitchen Rules FOX Broadcasting Company signs Seven to create My Kitchen Rules for the United States television market The Seven Network – Australia’s most-watched broadcast television platform and a key business of Seven West Media, one of Australia’s leading integrated media and content creation companies - today announced its next move in its long-term strategy in the development and creation of market-leading content in international markets. Building on the increasing international recognition of Seven’s created and produced My Kitchen Rules, the company today confirmed that FOX Broadcasting Company (FOX), one of the “big four” television networks in the United States has signed Seven to create and produce My Kitchen Rules for the United States. The programme – a celebrity version of the successful format - has commenced filming. Today’s signing with FOX for the United States builds on Seven’s agreement to create and produce My Kitchen Rules for Channel 4 in the United Kingdom and joins New Zealand, Serbia, Russia, Denmark, Belgium, Canada, Norway, Germany and Lithuania with “local” versions of the Seven format. In addition, the Australian version of My Kitchen Rules is seen in more than 160 territories around the world.
