RRS SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH SETS SAIL FOR SEA TRAILS Dave Evans was on hand to witness the cutting-edge polar research ship the RRS Sir David Attenborough set sail from the Cammell Laird shipyard on Wednesday 21st October for sea trials, which will take place off North Wales. It was in October 2016 that the workers at Cammell Laird began construction of this unique vessel and now, after four years of hard and dedicated work by hundreds of the shipyard’s staff, this next generation of science vessel is almost ready for full service. The 14-days of sea trials, undertaken by Cammell Laird engineers, will test the ship’s propulsion, steering, engineering and navigation systems. Once the trials are completed, the British Antarctic Survey will take over command of the ship and head to Holyhead for a 50-day training period before heading out to sea once more to test a range of operational functions, including helideck landing and maneuvering. When these tests are Liiverpooll completed, the ship will be formally handed over to the Natural Environment Research Council and in 2021, all being well, the RRS Sir David Attenborough will be subjected to ice trials in the Arctic before finally embarking on its maiden voyage to Antarctica in November 2021.

MY PLANET LIVERPOOL • 3 APPRECIATING ᕡᕢ NATURE

ᕧ ESPITE the horrors of Covid-19, and the subsequent lockdown that began in March, people in our region took advantage of what was their permissible hour of exercise each day to walk through some of Dthe wonderful parks and beauty spots that we are blessed with here on Merseyside. While making these walks, many took the opportunity to snap a host of great pictures and so My Planet Liverpool decided to celebrate the wonderful scenes of nature that we have on our doorstep by creating an “Appreciating Nature’ picture feature, displaying some of the photographs which have kindly been provided by four different people from our region’s business sector. My Planet Liverpool would like to thank Alison Lobb (managing partner Morecrofts Solicitors), Joel Jelen (Ubiquitypr and Reset Breathing) and Tony McDonough (YBNews), along with MPL’s own photographer, Arthur Gold, for allowing MPL to publish their pictures in this issue. ᕣᕤ ᕥ If, during the Autumn and Winter months of this pandemic and disruptive year, you would like to have your own pictures of our local parks, beauty spots and wildlife displayed in future versions of MPL (there is no charge) please email them, along with your name and where the pictures were taken to: [email protected]
