Brief Summary of Project Improvement of SH-79 from Kollegal to Tamil Nadu Border in the State of Karnataka Brief Summary of Project 1. The Government of Karnataka through the Government of India has received in principal approval for a loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) towards Karnataka State Highway Improvement Project – III (KSHIP-III) for developing State Road network adopting innovative financial models under Public Private Partnership (PPP). 2. Executing Agency is the Public Works Department, represented by the Project Director, Project Implementation Unit, Karnataka State Highway Improvement Project (PIU-KSHIP) 3. PIU-KSHIP has planned to upgrade / strengthen Kollegal to Tamil Nadu Border section of SH- 79 to 2-lane with paved shoulders configuration. 4. The proposed project road is located in Kollegal Taluka of Chamrajnagar district, in the State of Karnataka. The project road starts in Kollegal at Ch. Km 61+460 of SH-79 and terminates at Tamil Nadu border near Palar at Km 151+080. Total length of the project road is 90 km. 5. Mysore (Chamarajapura Railway Station) is the nearest railway station, located at a distance of 62.0 km and Bangalore (Kempegowda International Airport) is the nearest airport, located at a distance of 185.0 km 6. The project road in majority length (66.380 km) has intermediate lane carriageway of 5.5 m width (Figure-2), about 20.820 km of project road has two lane i.e. 7.0 m wide carriageway (Figure-3) and only 2.8 km of project road has single lane i.e. 3.75 m wide carriageway 7. 52.53 km out of 90 km of the proposed project road is passing through two Wildlife Sanctuaries namely Malai Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary and Cauvery Wild Life Sanctuary. 50.13 km stretch of the project road traverse through Malai Mahadeshwara Wildlife Sanctuary (existing chainage km 89+020 to 91+780 & 103+380 to 150+750) and 2.4 km stretch of the project road traverse through Cauvery Wildlife Sanctuary (existing chainage km 94+950 to 97+350). 8. Agriculture is the main land use with very few industries along project road. Commercial activities is only noted when alignment passes through settlements however no major industries are noted along project road. Major settlements along the project road are Kollegal, Hanur, Cowdalli and Male Mahadeshwara. 9. The project road is located in plain terrain (29.4 km), rolling terrain (24.0 km) and hilly terrain (36.6 km). Out of 36.6 km of the hilly terrain, 8.4 km stretch is above 1,000 m from mean sea level. 10. There are 189 culverts, 15 minor bridges, 66 minor junctions and 1 major junction along the project road. Improvement Proposal Improvement proposal for the Kollegal – Tamil Nadu border includes strengthening and widening of existing carriageway to 2/4 lane carriageway in rural and built up stretches. In Wild Life Sanctuary area it is proposed to strengthen the existing carriageway without any widening and geometry improvement as per MoEF circular dated 22 nd December 2014. Improvement proposal proposed in the different sections are presented below:- Rural Area : - In Rural Areas (Non–built up area) it is proposed to strengthen and widened the existing carriageway to 7m with 2m paved shoulder and 1m earthen shoulder on both sides. The total proposed formation width is 14m. Earthen drain shall be provided on both sides for the surface drainage of the project. Built-up Section : - In Built up areas it is proposed to strengthen and widened the existing carriageway to 4-lane divided carriageway with 2m wide RCC Drain cum footpath is proposed on both sides of project road. Wild Life Sanctuary: - In Wild Life Sanctuary area it is proposed to strengthen the existing carriageway and retaining the existing alignment and formation width. Culverts: 33 will be reconstructed, 143 will be widened and 8 new culverts will constructed Bridges: 7 bridges will be replaced, 7 bridges will be widened and 1 bridge will retain with repairs 12. Water Requirement: Approx. 582 KLD water will be required per day during the construction period. There are good numbers of surface water body, irrigation canals along the project road. Water will be sourced from these surface water bodies / canals with due permission from concerned authorities 13. Solid Waste: The solid waste generated due to construction and allied activities would mainly consist of earth materials. These materials will be reused for rehabilitation of borrow area / quarry sites, camp sites and slopes. The municipal solid wastes generated in construction & workers camp will be disposed of at nearest identified location of disposal / landfill sites of local authority under their consent. 14. Liquid Waste: Estimated quantity of liquid waste from labour camp is 10,400 liters per day. Soak pits and septic tanks will be provided at labour camps. 15.
