While it's short of miracle that the PRK would even let this gymnast out of the country, Su-Jong exceeded expectations, medaling in the vault and uneven bars during the Asian Games back in The Worst Gymnast While she failed to qualify for the finals in the Athens Olympics, most sports junkies on the internet recognize her from this embarrassing photo on the uneven bars.

    Strides Toward Equality: The Portrayal of Black Female Athletes in Children’s Picturebooks Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Rebekah May Bruce, M.A. Graduate Program in Education: Teaching and Learning The Ohio State University 2018 Dissertation Committee: Michelle Ann Abate, Advisor Patricia Enciso Ruth Lowery Alia Dietsch Copyright by Rebekah May Bruce 2018 Abstract This dissertation examines nine narrative non-fiction picturebooks about Black American female athletes. Contextualized within the history of children’s literature and American sport as inequitable institutions, this project highlights texts that provide insights into the past and present dominant cultural perceptions of Black female athletes. I begin by discussing an eighteen-month ethnographic study conducted with racially minoritized middle school girls where participants analyzed picturebooks about Black female athletes. This chapter recognizes Black girls as readers and intellectuals, as well as highlights how this project serves as an example of a white scholar conducting crossover scholarship. Throughout the remaining chapters, I rely on cultural studies, critical race theory, visual theory, Black feminist theory, and Marxist theory to provide critical textual and visual analysis of the focal picturebooks. Applying these methodologies, I analyze the authors and illustrators’ representations of gender, race, and class. Chapter Two discusses the ways in which the portrayals of track star Wilma Rudolph in Wilma Unlimited and The Quickest Kid in Clarksville demonstrate shifting cultural understandings of Black female athletes. Chapter Three argues that Nothing but Trouble and Playing to Win draw on stereotypes of Black Americans as “deviant” in order to construe tennis player Althea Gibson as a “wild child.” Chapter Four discusses the role of family support in the representations of Alice Coachman in Queen of the Track and Touch the Sky.

    04/10/13: Great Britain’s Ruby Harrold and Rebecca Tunney placed 17th and 19th in the women’s all-around final at the 2013 Artistic Gymnastics World Championship in Antwerp. Both girls, competing in their first World Championships, were hampered by problems on beam early on in a competition that was won by American Simone Biles (60.212) from teammate Kyla Ross (59.332) with Russia’s Aliya Mustafina taking the bronze (58.856). The British girls were in the same group and began on the beam. Rebecca had a long wait on the podium to begin her routine, starting with round-off straight she couldn’t quite stick the landing and fell; a good double pike dismount scored her 11.966. Ruby followed up and unfortunately also had difficulties, her flick layout was out of line and she couldn't hold on and with another fall on her change ring she scored 11.066. On the floor Rebecca stepped out on the first of her explosive tumbles but fought back beautifully to perfectly stick her remaining passes ending with double pike and scoring 13.000. Ruby produced an outstanding floor routine, the huge crowd clapping her along, she landed each of her tumbles dead to score her an impressive 13.700. On vault both girls performed the double twisting Yurchenko, Rebecca landing perfectly to score 14.866 and Ruby, with a small pace back scored 13.900. Finally on bars, Rebecca Tunney started off well but couldn’t quite make it over giant half and fell, she jumped back up to finish strongly for 13.033 and a total of 52.865.

    American Cup returns to Greensboro, N.C., in 2019 GREENSBORO, N.C., April 26, 2018 – The American Cup, the USA’s most prestigious international invitational and part of the International Gymnastics Federation’s all-around World Cup series, returns to the Greensboro (N.C.) Coliseum Complex on March 2, 2019, at 11:30 a.m. ET. The American Cup, which was held in Greensboro in 2014, is the anchor of a week that includes four gymnastics events. In addition to the American Cup, the Triple Cup weekend includes the Nastia Liukin Cup on March 1 at 7 p.m. and the men’s Elite Team Cup at 6 p.m. on March 2. The Greensboro Coliseum Complex is also hosting the 2019 Greensboro Gymnastics Invitational Feb. 27-March 3, turning the city into “gymnastics central.” The USA’s Morgan Hurd of Middletown, Del./First State Gymnastics, and Yul Moldauer of Arvada, Colo./University of Oklahoma, won the 2018 American Cup. The American Cup showcases many of the world’s best male and female gymnasts in a one-day, all- around competition, and invitations to compete will be based on performances at the 2018 World Gymnastics Championships. Held in conjunction with the American Cup, the Nastia Liukin Cup features many of the country’s top Junior Olympic female gymnasts and is held at 7 p.m. on the night prior to the American Cup. Named after the 2008 Olympic gold medalist and one of the USA’s most popular gymnasts, the Nastia Liukin Cup showcases gymnasts who qualify through the Nastia Liukin Cup Series.

This early arrival into the Village was to give the Team the maximum amount of training time in the Games environment. The Women and Men’s Teams had a Commonwealth Games and World Championships Training Camp at Lilleshall prior to traveling up to Glasgow. The girls travelled by plane from their respective parts of the country and the boys travelled as a group by coach from Lilleshall.

Meenan: Sexual Assault of United States Olympic Athletes Sexual Assault of United States Olympic Athletes: Gymnastics, Taekwondo, and Swimming Chloe Meenan Abstract: The distribution of power in American Olympic sports has made room for the development of a culture of sexual assault. This culture has continued to grow and the organizations in authority have not done enough to put a stop to the abuse. First, I will address the troubles that victims have when sharing their stories, due to the distribution of power within the organizations, namely in gymnastics, taekwondo, and swimming. I focus on the Me Too Movement and the influence that social media has had in making strides towards raising awareness about sexual assault. I will explore the specifics of the abuse within each sport and the women who shared their stories to prevent similar things from happening to others.
