I was standing in line for what I thought was an elevator to the top when I noticed this guy standing in front of me. He was the same guy I’d seen on the bus from Indianapolis, asleep next to his guitar, taking up the whole seat. It didn’t matter since other seats were empty. You’d expect the bus to be full at Christmas, but it wasn’t a good year. “So are you going up?” I asked him. “I suppose I am,” he said. “You know, I saw you on the bus back there. I’m Calvin Dee, from Caldwell. Caldwell, Indiana.” He seemed a little reluctant to shake my hand.

OLLI Winter session, 2018 Instructor: Pete Elman Course Title: "It's All About the Song" Sub-title: "The Mount Olympus of American pop-rock songwriters" Course description and bio: The essence of popular music is the song; whether it is folk, pop, rock, rhythm and blues or country, the song is the core of the popular record. This course examines the lives and work of six great songwriters/artists of the golden era of rock and roll. We will study the contributions of Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, the team of Carole King and Gerry Goffin, Brian Wilson, Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell. Class description: The course will be broken up chronologically, focusing on one songwriter each week. Each session will include: --A thorough, background lecture about each composer, including the musical style most associated with them and stories, sometimes primary source. --A slide show with photographs, charts, maps and information on each composer. --In depth analysis of select lyrics from songs by each songwriter --Audio high-quality CD versions of songs --High quality DVD film clips and/or select youtube clips, of each songwriter or others artists performing that songwriter’s material. --A live music component, where the instructor will demonstrate on piano and guitar melodic and arrangement aspects of the songs that will help illustrate the writing style unique to each composer. Bob Dylan’s American Journey, 1956-1966 September 29, 2006, through January 6, 2007 Exhibition Labels Exhibit Introductory Panel I Think I’ll Call It America Born into changing times, Bob Dylan shaped history in song. “Life’s a voyage that’s homeward bound.” So wrote Herman Melville, author of the great tall tale Moby Dick and one of the American mythmakers whose legacy Bob Dylan furthers. Like other great artists this democracy has produced, Dylan has come to represent the very historical moment that formed him. Though he calls himself a humble song and dance man, Dylan has done more to define American creative expression than anyone else in the past half-century, forming a new poetics from his emblematic journey. A small town boy with a wandering soul, Dylan was born into a post-war landscape of possibility and dread, a culture ripe for a new mythology. Learning his craft, he traveled a road that connected the civil rights movement to the 1960s counterculture and the revival of American folk music to the creation of the iconic rock star. His songs reflected these developments and, resonating, also affected change. Yet growing up in the small town of Hibbing, Bob Dylan discovered his musical heritage through radio stations transmitting blues and country from all over, and formed his own bands to practice the newfound religion of rock ‘n’ roll.
