President's Message: Executive Committee Update

It is my sincere desire to be able to provide you with monthly updates regarding our progress on the Executive Committee and the management of our Association. We have been busy! First let me say what a great day February13th was for SC Optometry. We had our legislative appreciation lunch and coding seminar which was a huge success. Over 80 ODs were in attendance and over 90 legislators came to our lunch reception. We must all thank James Vaught, O.D. and Lori Donovan, O.D. our Legislative Committee Co-Chairs for their dedicated efforts to help organize this event for SC Optometry. We must also thank Richard Davis and his staff at Capitol Consultants, because the level of success would not have been achieved Dr. Peter Candela, SCOA President without their expertise. Legislators told me, other Executive Committee members and Richard Davis (on separate occasions), that they had never seen so many of their Inside this colleagues together at a similar event. Thanks to the team efforts of your colleagues, your Executive Committee, your Legislative Committee Co-Chairs Edition: and most importantly Richard Davis and Capitol Consultants. Let us continue to improve and grow this annual event, and please Local Society remember what Wayne Cannon, O.D. has always stated, “It is by legislation Information 2 that we are allowed to practice. It is by legislation that we can cease to practice. It is by legislation that determines on who we practice. It is by Member News 3 legislation that determines our scope of practice. It is legislation that determines how much we get paid to practice.” New Members 3 Here are some of our initial accomplishments that have been possible with the help and guidance of Capitol Consultants. We were able to take over OD Rally 4-7 the Annual Meeting management five weeks before the event and had one of the most successful meetings in years. There is an ongoing process of In Memory 8 organizing the SCOA office and accounting systems to increase efficiency and save the Association money. We have been able to discontinue certain SCOAPAC 8-9 contracts as they duplicated services Capitol Consultants expertly provides with no additional outlay of expenses, which has saved the Association Website 9 thousands of dollars. As you are aware, we have redesigned the Delineator, are in the process of upgrading our website and have increased the number of Summer Seminar 10 hours (8:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.) that SCOA staff is available to you. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to Membership pick up the phone and give me a call. Information 11

SCOA 2008 OD Rally - Great Success! Third Annual OD Rally - February 13, 2008

This year’s Legislative Rally in Columbia was a HUGE success. The SCOA had 87 ODs attend the Rally. The day began at the Blatt building with a panel discussion of legislators that consisted of Representatives Leon Howard, Thad Viers and Bob Walker. They participated in a lively dialogue of questions asked by fellow ODs. Lt. Governor Andre Bauer stopped in and addressed the crowd on the importance of communication with their legislators and praised the SCOA for their strong presence at the State House. Ms. Bz Giese, with the SC Department of Health and Human Services gave a brief report on Medicaid. Afterwards the group crossed the grounds to the State House and had the honor of being introduced in the SC House of Representatives. We then headed to the Capitol City Club, where 95 legislators joined us for lunch. After lunch each legislator was presented with a gift bag. For those legislators not in attendance, a bag was hand delivered to their office. The only slight inconvenience was we needed more seats at the luncheon to accommodate the crowd of legislators. What a great problem to have! The day ended with a Coding Seminar presented by Dr. Chuck Brownlow.

THANK YOU Capitol Consultants for organizing the event and as usual, for being on top of your game. THANK YOU to each OD who took time out of their practice to support our wonderful profession. Our Association is strong legislatively because of your time, efforts and financial support.

Thanks, Lori Donovan, O.D. & James Vaught, O.D.

In Memory

Dear Colleagues: I would like to take a moment in remembrance of a true asset to the Optometric Community, Dr. Harold Vigdosky. For those of you who did not have the pleasure of knowing our wonderful colleague, he was a gentle giant. A kind-hearted man who exemplified a kindness and sincerity that is often read or heard about, but rarely experience. The world is a better place because of him. He will be greatly missed.

Regards, Rosalind Smith, O.D.

Dr. Harold S. Vigodsky SPARTANBURG, SC-- Dr. Harold Sidney Vigodsky, 61, of 804 Shoresbrook Drive, died Thursday, December 27, 2007, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
