Announcing the Formation of KOPPLIN & KUEBLER INTERNATIONAL the Club Industry’S New Gateway to the World February 15, 2011 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Announcing the Formation of KOPPLIN & KUEBLER INTERNATIONAL The Club Industry’s New Gateway to the World SCOTTSDALE, AZ (2/15/11) — From the moment of its creation, KOPPLIN & KUEBLER was dedicated to elevating the art of executive search in the club industry to new levels. Bringing together their extensive knowledge and experience, Dick Kopplin and Kurt Kuebler have established an impressive track record of placing the right executive at the right club. Going beyond the search process, they have also consulted with clubs on the kind of strategic thinking that will ensure a club’s viability for years to come. In an increasingly global environment, geography has become less of a factor in bringing together people and ideas. To better serve the industry, the company is expanding to include markets around the world. In releasing the news, Dick said: We are very excited to announce the addition of Niall Flanagan to the KOPPLIN & KUEBLER team as the Managing Partner of our London office. Niall has an outstanding reputation in the golf and club industry, and will focus on International Executive Search and Consulting for KOPPLIN & KUEBLER INTERNATIONAL . throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. We believe the timing is appropriate for our firm to expand overseas and Niall is an accomplished, experienced executive who can effectively lead that expansion. Niall Flanagan ’s 25 years of extensive club expertise was acquired by working at the top echelon of blue chip clubs in the UK and Middle East, notably his roles as President/CEO at Loch Lomond, Director of Operations at St. Andrews Links Trust (the organization responsible for running the courses and facilities at the ‘Home of Golf’), General Manager at Dubai Golf & Racing Club (home to the Dubai World Cup, the richest horse race in the world), Director of Golf at Celtic Manor (venue for 2010 Ryder Cup), and the Club Administrator at Wentworth Club (venue for the BMW PGA Championship). Niall also served as European Board Member of CMAE and President of the Scottish Region of CMAE. Niall said: It is a great honour to be joining KOPPLIN & KUEBLER , and I look forward to utilizing the experience I have gained as we launch the international division of the company. At home on a global stage, Niall is the ideal person to expand the services and mission of the company beyond North America. Today’s information technology demands that clubs be in tune with member expectations and coming trends. KOPPLIN & KUEBLER INTERNATIONAL brings to its clients an impeccable reputation and an impressive record of success in this important area. With emerging markets in places like China, Russia, Singapore, South America, Morocco, and Africa, there is a need for managers with the expertise to deliver world-class service and facilities to high-end club members across the globe. KOPPLIN & KUEBLER INTERNATIONAL can satisfy that demand with their connections to the top executives in the field, plus provide the knowledge to consult with these new properties to give them the benefit of the successful practices in established markets like North America and Western Europe. Dick Kopplin has over 36 years’ experience as general manager and vice president of operations for nationally recognized clubs. He has also served as vice president and senior director for multi-club companies, including Desert Mountain Development Company in Scottsdale, Arizona, and Castle Pines in Denver, Colorado. Dick has experience working closely with architects and construction firms, while opening five golf courses and four clubhouses. Kurt Kuebler ’s 30-year club career has included the Tavistock Group, in Orlando, Florida, where he was the General Manager/COO of Isleworth Golf and Country Club, Isleworth Home Services, and Isleworth Community Association. Prior to Isleworth, he served in a similar capacity at The Loxahatchee Club in Jupiter, Florida and Desert Highlands Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. Kurt was also President of the Florida Chapter Club Managers Association of America (FLCMAA) and served as a National Director for CMAA. From an executive candidate viewpoint, the expansion of KOPPLIN & KUEBLER to other countries opens up, literally, a world of new possibilities for exciting career advancement. Kurt said: Dick and I are tremendously excited that Niall has joined us! We believe that his knowledge of the international arena, combined with the tremendous respect the golf community has for him on both sides of the pond, are a perfect complement to our efforts in North America. Niall’s portfolio of contacts allows us to significantly increase our access to highly qualified executive placement candidates, as well as providing for expanded client services in operational and development consulting areas. As a previous client of KOPPLIN & KUEBLER I am not surprised that they are expanding their private club search and consulting business to the international market. Their reputation as the premier club executive search firm in the United States will serve them well in a global environment. -Steve Boyd, Search Chairman, Baltusrol Golf Club Contact Us 7349 Via Paseo Del Sur, #202 132 Tulip Tree Court 81 Oxford Street Scottsdale, Arizona 85258 Jupiter, Florida 33458 London, W1D 2EU USA USA United Kingdom (480) 443-9102 (407) 864-6798 44 207 903 5105 Fax (480) 443-9642 Fax: (561) 747-5213 Fax: 44 207 903 5333 [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] www.kopplinandkuebler.com Click Here to Register for E-Mail Updates Follow Us on Twitter! Summary Report TRAILS AND GOLF COURSES: Best Practices on Design and Management July 2005 SUMMARY Golf courses, with their large expanses of ‘undeveloped’ land, can appear to be a tempting place to locate a trail or bikeway in a community seeking to overcome gaps in their trail system. The golf course industry has been resistant to allowing increased public access for several reasons, including privacy, security, safety, liability, and impacts on golf operations. At the same time, trails and golf courses do co-exist around the country with few reported problems. The conclusion of this report is: In some locations, a trail or bikeway may be able to co-exist with a golf course as long as some basic design, operations, and management techniques are employed. Most of the existing courses that have allowed trails are publicly owned and publicly accessible courses. Additional research is needed to verify conditions in the case study sites, and to identify the conditions and practices that may be applicable to other locations. TABLE OF CONTENTS 1. A SCOTTISH GOLF PIONEER DEVELOPS THE WEST IN AMERICA GOLF COURSE ARCHITECT WILLIAM WATSON 1860-1941 By Dean Knuth William Watson Circa 1920 at age 60 William Watson was an early pioneer in golf course architecture who immigrated from Fife, Scotland to America in 1898. In a successful career he had designed more than 100 golf courses by his retirement in 1929 when the Great Depression began. Many golfers know of Donald Ross and Alister Mackenzie but haven’t heard of Watson, yet many of his courses have survived close to a century or more. Minikahda Club in Minnesota was his first U.S. design and also his first job as head golf professional. He was prolific and a success in California. A number of his other best-known designs have hosted major USGA and PGA National Championships, including Harding Park, San Diego Country Club, the original Brentwood Country Club, Diablo Country Club, Berkeley Country Club and Orinda Country Club. He designed the original The Olympic Club Lake and Ocean courses plus many others which unfortunately did not survive housing developments on land that became more valuable as America grew. He was guided by the primary goal of maintaining naturalness in his designs. Watson wrote:, “A good rule is to stress the importance of fitting in all grading work to harmonize with the surrounding territory, mounds, slopes, grassy hollows, sand pits, all have their values in beautifying the setting of our greens and in giving them distinctive definition — if artificially arranged without appearance of artificiality.” He also believed that a course is more interesting if every green has a character all its own, giving the player something besides the flag to view in approaching the hole.
