  • Environment, Media and the Indian Society: a Review of the Management Issues of the Media Houses
International Journal of Management, Technology And Engineering ISSN NO : 2249-7455 Environment, Media and the Indian Society: A Review of the Management Issues of the Media Houses Ananda Mohan Kar Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, The University of Burdwan, Burdwan, West Bengal, India, Burdwan-713104; Email: [email protected] Abstract Mass participation of conscious citizens is needed to maintain clean environment. To ensure this participation, we need more public consciousness and here the role of the media is important. So it is quite legitimate to study the performance of the media in influencing public attitude and government policy. Studies show that media coverage of environment, both in the West and in India, have grown since 1970.Later, the research findings on Global Warming made environment a global concern. The Television and film in developed countries continuously focused on environment. In India, however, Television and film have not paid much attention to environment. Some critics believe, after adopting economic liberalization, media portrayed environmental movements as obstruction to industrialization and thereby harmful to development of the nation. In the 21st century, the big media houses have initiated several environment protection programmes with the support from the corporate world. Keywords: Environmentalism, Media, Sociology of Environment, Conservation, Development, Corporate Social Responsibility, Environmental Movement, Television, Print Media, Economic Liberalisation. 1. Introduction It is a legitimate question that how far the media has been able to spread environmental awareness in the real sense? Or, is the media competent enough to spread awareness? Has the media failed miserably in arousing the sense of responsibility towards environment? Why the media is unable to encourage people sufficiently to preserve environment? The questions require closer examination of the representation of the environmental issues in the media.

  • Conceptualizing the State-Nation Via Education Reform: from Multicultural to Intercultural Citizenship
Conceptualizing the State-Nation via Education Reform: From Multicultural to Intercultural Citizenship by Neville Gustad Panthaki A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Social Justice Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto © Copyright by Neville Gustad Panthaki 2016 Conceptualizing the State-Nation via Education Reform: From Multicultural to Intercultural Citizenship Neville Gustad Panthaki Doctor of Philosophy Department of Social Justice Education Ontario Institute for Studies in Education University of Toronto 2016 Abstract Transnational movements of sociopolitical culture defy the integrity of the nation-state. Its organizational principle of singularity, and struggles to accommodate increasing diversity within homogeneity, are challenged by the increasing prominence of alternate and multiple ways of being and knowing. Nation-state education systems organized to deliver citizenship values, fail to rectify the fracture between their quest for multicultural participation and their promotion of conformity within a single ‘national’ identity. Systems of education are products of their respective sociopolitical systems. Hence, notions of citizenship (inclusion) and democracy (participation) must be reformed to facilitate genuine education reform. The nation-state is a sociopolitical project that confines pedagogical reform within the framework of a paradigm. Education reform can only be achieved by substituting the concept of multi-cultural, with inter-cultural citizenship, thereby transforming the unidimensional nation-state into a pluralist state-nation. The state-nation is an ideal-type conceptual framework which is predicated upon a constant (re-)negotiation of categories and their corresponding ii belonging-identities, so that all boundaries remain liminal and permeable rather than immutable and exclusionary.

  • Symposium on Science & Stewardship to Protect & Sustain
Symposium on Science & Stewardship to Protect & Sustain Wilderness Values: Session Abstracts Special Session on protecting and restoring socio-ecological systems in the Eastern Himalayas: Manas National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the border between India and Bhutan. Part 1. A Difficult History Names and affiliations: Trishita Shandilya, PG student, Studying Masters in Sociology from Delhi School of Economics, University of Delhi Title of presentation/panel/round table discussion: “Women’s perspectives on wilderness and protected areas and struggle to identify their own space in wilderness” Some observations from neighborhood village of Manas National Park of Assam, India Format: Oral presentation ABSTRACT: Women of ecosystem-based traditional societies are usually deprived of their choice and priorities when an ecosystem is pulled into a new policy regime. This study focuses on understanding the values and perceptions that women of fringe villages carry towards a National Park and how their life is influenced by the park. In a patriarchal social structure, women are ascribed to be the nurturer of the family, and in the ecosystem based traditional social milieu, this ascribed role brings the woman folks closer to nature. Collecting vegetables, herbs, fetching water, engaging in developing kitchen/homestead garden, etc. facilitates a constant interaction with nature for women. These interactions create a multifaceted relation of dependency between nature and humans, specifically between woman and nature. This presentation carries the everydayness of women's life living in the fringe area of a National Park and their intimacy with the forest emotionally, socially and economically. Women's regular journey to the forest does not suffice only the material needs, but acts as an emotional support system in their lives.

The children Sanctuary influenced decades ago are now in drivers’ seats, poised to lead us to safe harbour. Sanctuary Asia and Sanctuary Cub, were never ‘just magazines’ – since their birth in the 1980s, they have evolved into strong movements that have led to the creation of diverse, yet umbilically connected projects.
