    Paper & Cardboard: What Can (and Cannot) Be Recycled Sometimes it’s hard to know if a paper or cardboard item is ok for recycling. Junk mail? Glossy magazines? Facial tissues? Milk cartons? Gift wrap? What if it has glitter all over it? Fortunately, the vast majority of the paper and cardboard that we use on a daily basis can be recycled. Generally, as long as it’s not lined with a plastic film, coated with wax, or covered in embellishments like glitter, velvet or foil, it’s accepted. Labels, plastic windows, staples and a little tape are ok to include. Here’s an overview of what is (and isn’t) accepted, followed by explanations: ACCEPTED PAPER NON-ACCEPTED ITEMS AND HOW TO DISPOSE OF THEM: ▪ Hardcover books, paperbacks: Donate; recycle only ripped out pages; or trash ▪ Paper towels/napkins/tissues: Food scrap recycling or trash ▪ Wax or parchment paper: Food scrap recycling or trash ▪ Coffee/drink cups: Trash ▪ Coated, leak-proof paper plates: Trash ▪ Giftwrap laminated with plastic film or embellished with metallics, glitter, velvet, etc: Trash [Note: regular, plain paper-only gift wrap is fine to recycle.] ▪ Photograph paper: Trash ACCEPTED CARDBOARD All cardboard (any color). Over recent years the industry has been working hard to harness a more sustainable solution based on renewably sourced vegetable fats. By combining paper produced from responsibly managed forests with sustainably sourced fats it is now possible to produce a fully efficient packaging material based on over 90% renewable bio materials. In a European setting all the talk today is about a shift towards a sustainable, bio-based economy. In the packaging industry this is being translated into many complex and expensive structures, combining bio- plastics with paper and other cellulosic materials. For many existing applications however bio sourced wax can easily be overlooked as it seems just too easy… These products are commercially available and provide excellent barrier and release properties. They can be run on existing equipment and can meet all renewability and ‘end of life’ requirements. Despite its long history, the use of wax paper today has been confined mainly to a small number of niche applications like confectionery packaging, cheese and meat wrappings; since it has been largely superseded by plastic films, extrusion coating or laminated structures.

BOUND VOLUMES WITH COATED (GLOSSY) PAPER Priority Action: . Immediately freeze or air dry wet volumes (ideally within 6 to 8 hours) o Freezing (at -10º F or lower), followed by vacuum freeze-drying, is the most successful salvage method for coated papers . Coated papers will stick together (irreversibly) unless frozen or dried immediately o Coated papers are the most vulnerable to complete loss and should not be permitted to begin drying until each volume can be addressed . It may be necessary to re-wet books with coated paper with clean cold water until they can be frozen Recommendations: . Do not allow coated paper to dry before freezing or drying . To pack for freezing - o Do not open or close books, do not separate covers o Do not try to close or flatten water swollen volumes o If possible interleave volumes with freezer or wax paper to prevent sticking o Pack spine down in plastic crates or cardboard boxes 1 layer deep to prevent crushing o Line containers with garbage bags or plastic sheeting o Pack oversized volumes flat in containers 2-3 books deep o Do not stack large books on top of smaller ones o After boxes are packed, place on pallets if available o Do not stack boxes on pallets more than three high o Ship to a freezer facility as soon as possible o Mold will begin to grow after 48 hours if materials are not kept cold .
