1999-00 NCAA Women's Soccer Championships Records 44 8 DIVISION I So c c e r DIVISION I 1999 Championship Hi g h l i g h t s Back to the Throne: The Tar Heels of North Carolina regained the throne of the championship after a one-year hiatus. North Carolina defeated the University of Notre Dame, 2-0, in the final match of the Women’s College Cup. The victory gave the Tar Heels their 15th piece of champi- onship hardware. After a scoreless first half, Tar Heel Meredith Florance had an opportunity to score with possession of the ball inside the box and only 10 yards separating herself from Notre Dame’s keeper LaKeysia Beene. Florance was foiled as Notre Dame midfielder Nancy Mikacenic got on the scene and cleared the ball before Florance could shoot. The Tar Heels’ Lorrie Fair thwarts the Notre Dame offense during the championship. Fair’s Florance tried a second shot only seven minutes later as she took the ball to the goal in the 11th performance earned her most outstanding minute of the second half. Florance got by Notre Dame defender Kelly Lindsey and blasted the ball defensive player honors. into the goal mouth from the left wing past Beene. North Carolina’s Beth Sheppard added some security to the game result by knocking in a goal in the 80th minute of play. All-Tournament Team: North Carolina’s Lorrie Fair received the tournament’s most outstand- ing defensive player award. Tar Heel Susan Bush was named the tournament’s most outstanding offensive player for posting three assists during the Women’s College Cup. Kim Patrick, Anne Remy, Jena Kluegel and Meredith Florance were the other Tar Heels named to the all-tournament team. Also honored were Notre Dame’s Jen Grubb, Jenny Streiffer and LaKeysia Beene, who recorded 11 saves during the Women’s College Cup; Santa Clara’s Nikki Serlenga and Danielle Slaton; and Christie Welsh from Penn State. • Girls. All Women. All Sports
All girls. All women. All sports. Impact Report Honoring our past, embracing our future Report Impact Impact Report Impact Impact Report Impact This is a pivotal time for the Women’s Sports Foundation. We have been leading her forward for 45 years and counting. We have advocated for her, kept her in the game and lifted her at times when no one else believed in her power. We have come a long way in changing cultural stereotypes. The transformative benefits of sports for young girls are undeniable. Now is a moment when the spotlight on gender equity provides an opportunity to reach wider and advocate more vehemently, to illuminate the possibilities of every girl and woman. The Foundation's significant history and artifacts are newly archived at the iconic New-York Historical Society Museum & Library, also home of the Billie Jean King Archive. Our documents and memorabilia tell the story of girls' and women's hurdles and 02 triumphs in sports. Our Foundation continues to be groundbreaking, and this rich history reflects our legacy of aecting change. 03 As we honor our history we also prepare for the future. Our new brand signifies our continued growth and strength and positions our Foundation well into the future. It is also a symbol of our unwavering dedication to ensuring that all girls and women have equal access to sports and physical activity and the tremendous life-long benefits they provide. We remain steadfast in our mission to enable girls and women to unlock their potential through the power of sports. All girls.
