Aspects such as morphological stasis and phenotypic plasticity further complicate their taxonomic designation. In this study, we demonstrate that the application of DNA barcoding can alleviate these problems within the Carychiidae (Gastro- poda, Pulmonata). These microsnails are a taxon of the pulmonate lineage and most likely migrated onto land indepen- dently of the Stylommatophora clade. Their taxonomical classification is currently based on conchological and anatomical characters only. Despite much confusion about historic species assignments, the Carychiidae can be unambiguously subdi- vided into two taxa: (i) Zospeum species, which are restricted to karst caves, and (ii) Carychium species, which occur in a broad range of environmental conditions. The implementation of discrete molecular data (COI marker) enabled us to cor- rectly designate 90% of the carychiid microsnails. The remaining cases were probably cryptic Zospeum and Carychium taxa and incipient species, which require further investigation into their species status. Within Ariantinae, C. obtusus stands out because of its aberrant cylindrical shell shape. Here, we present phylogenetic trees based on these five marker sequences and discuss the position of C. obtusus and phylogeographical scenarios in comparison with previously published results. Our results provide strong support for the sister-group relationship between Cylindrus and Arianta confirming previous studies and imply that the split between the two genera is quite old. The tree reveals a phylogeographical pattern of Ariantinae with a well-supported clade comprising the Balkan taxa which is the sister group to a clade with individuals from Alpine localities. -

Land Snails of the Eungella Plateau and Environs, Clarke Range, Mid-Eastern Queensland
LAND SNAILS OF THE EUNGELLA PLATEAU AND ENVIRONS, CLARKE RANGE, MID-EASTERN QUEENSLAND STANISIC, J.1 & WINDOW, E.2 This study documents the land snails recovered on the Eungella Biodiversity Survey. Thirty-three species belonging to 10 families are documented, representing the first attempt at analysing the altitudinal stratification of the Eungella land snail fauna. Three species were newly recorded and subsequently described from the survey, these being Eungellaropa crediton Holcroft 2018, Burwellia staceythomsonae Holcroft & Stanisic 2018, and Pereduropa burwelli Holcroft & Stanisic 2018. Fastosarion comerfordae Stanisic 2018 was also described from the survey material, having previ- ously been confused with the Mt Dryander Fastosarion superba (Cox, 1871). Species are discussed in relation to their current taxonomy, their local and more widespread distributions, and their habitat and microhabitat preferences. Shortcomings of the land snail survey are also briefly discussed. A bio- geographic overview of the Eungella rainforest land snails is presented. Twenty-three specimens from mainland Greece, Aegean Islands, Cyprus and North Africa were analysed, revealing that (1) H. nucula is mono- phyletic, (2) H. cincta from Greece and Cyprus is paraphyletic, and so questions arise regarding the taxonomy of this species, and (3) H. cf. cincta from Tunisia might be considered as a distinct evolutionary lineage. Moreover Helix valentini, an endemic species of Kalymnos Island group, is clustered within the lineage of H. c. anatolica, so supporting the synonymy of the two ‘species’, and the elevation of H. c. anatolica to species level. Hence, our results stress the need for a taxonomic reconsideration of H. cincta in the Aegean Sea, indicating that sequence data can prove useful in overcoming taxonomic issues at both species and subspecies level. 5. Results 5.1 SUMMARY OF SPECIES DISTRIBUTIONS The distribution database contains 1187 locality records, 927 for Rhytida and 260 for Wainuia, including some duplicates. Six percent of all records are of subfossils, mostly from cave deposits. Fig. 2 shows the combined occurrence of all species by 10 000 m x 10 000 m grid square. At least one species was recorded from 406 grid squares (391 excluding subfossil records). Rhytida species were recorded in 333 squares (318 excluding subfossils) and Wainuia species in 94 squares (90 excluding subfossils). The number of 10 000 m x 10 000 m grid squares containing records of each species or subspecies ranged from 2 to 105 (Table 1). Subfossil records extended the known range to additional grid squares in 12 of the 17 taxa. Generalised range maps for all taxa are presented for quick reference in Fig. 3. The distributions are mapped in detail in Fig. 4 (see Appendix 4) and discussed in the species accounts (Appendix 4). 5.2 ASSESSMENT OF CONSERVATION STATUS Data relevant to conservation status are discussed in the species notes (Appendix 4). Direct assessment of population trends is not currently possible as no population study has been conducted for any species of Wainuia or Rhytida. A tentative priority ranking was therefore performed using the scoring system adopted for other invertebrates in Department of Conservation (1994b). The results provide a coarse and somewhat subjective indication of conservation priorities (Table 2). They can be criticised for failing to adequately incorporate uncertainty in our present knowledge, and for not identifying critically threatened populations within some species or subspecies. -

To provide background information for a proposal to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature to suppress five subjective senior synonyms of Trochoidea geyeri, the synonymies of this and some other hygromiid species are given. The nominal taxa that are dealt with concern species that are conchologically more or less similar. These species were studied to minimize the risk that even more unused senior synonyms of T. geyeri would be discovered, which would require an additional ruling of the Commission. Distributional data and short conchological diagnoses are added to increase the usefulness of the present paper. E.
