Excellant Images Caught in the Act Sportvision’s Fieldf/x system tracks every player on the field and logs their movements some 20 times per second. Last summer, the company invited a handful of analysts to dig into the data gathered so far from Giants’ games at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Jeremy Greenhouse, a 22-year-old Tufts University graduate (who has since been hired by Bloomberg Sports), presented color- coded illustrations of a fielder’s probability of making a catch every step along the way. Adaptations are presented here. • Cubs 2013 Preview: a Bit Better Pitching, but Rebuilding Still Grinds Along Slowly
Cubs 2013 preview: A bit better pitching, but rebuilding still grinds along slowly By George Castle, CBM Historian Posted Friday, March 29, 2013 Theo Epstein is getting double for his money these days. First, the former lifelong Bostonian is getting a valuable education in Chicago politics as the three- cornered debate over Wrigley Field renovations shows how Clout City USA really works. And yet all the arguments over whether the Cubs should get seri- ous with Rosemont and consider moving if they don’t get a renova- Cubs GM Jed Hoyer (with wife Merrill) and boss Theo Ep- tions deal very soon give Epstein stein have once again constructed a roster that can be and his baseball operations depart- disassembled via mid-season trades. ment a big break. Off-the-field issues involving Wrigley Field, whether the installation of lights, falling concrete or Arne Harris’ hat shots, are always far more than sideshows. They become the main story, relegating the Cubs’ on-field fortunes to notebook status. The taffy pull involving Tom Ricketts, Rahm Emanuel, Tom Tunney, the rooftop owners and the vil- lage of Rosemont absolutely shifted the Cubs’ spring-training countdown to Opening Day to secondary news-angle status. If all focus was on the team itself, the conclusion would be a sub-standard roster with a slew of place-holders that is being intentionally fielded for the second-year in a row. Worse yet, as Epstein vows a rebuilding-from-the-ground-up strategy, there are no pitching phenoms or fresh-faced hot rookies as attention-getters to make the continual losing more palatable.

  • A's News Clips, Thursday, February 10, 2011 Inbox: Why the A's Don't
A’s News Clips, Thursday, February 10, 2011 Inbox: Why the A's don't need Young Beat reporter Jane Lee answers questions from A's fans By Jane Lee / MLB.com Why are the A's not making a serious push for Michael Young? That could be a huge piece toward making the A's puzzle complete. Package Dallas Braden and Kevin Kouzmanoff for Young. We need another real bat, not David DeJesus. He is just Ryan Sweeney with a fancier name. -- Phil K., Reno, Nev. I've received several varieties of this question throughout the week, and hopefully I can shed some light on why it really doesn't need to be asked again. Young is undoubtedly a valued player, one respected to the utmost degree around the league for his abilities both as an athlete -- he's a gamer in every sense of the word -- and as a leader. But the A's are no match for his three-year, $48 million price tag. Nor are they on his list of teams to which he'd accept a trade, unless they've changed their name to the Angels, Astros, Cardinals, Dodgers, Padres, Rockies, Twins or Yankees. Young has publicly stated he'd consider another team depending on the situation, but history tells us Oakland doesn't exactly have the easiest time reeling in players. The club is also not about to spend big money on a 34-year-old who doesn't boast the defensive abilities mirroring that of the team's other infielders. Among all American League third-base qualifiers last year, Young ranked last in fielding percentage (.950), zone rating (.765) and range factor per nine innings (2.36).

Maybe beginner quarterback Josh Freeman will provide you with a spark today that hes been named going to be the starter.
