  • Turnbull Hockey Pool For
Turnbull Hockey Pool for Each year, Turnbull students participate in several fundraising initiatives, which we promote as a way to develop a sense of community, leadership and social responsibility within the students. Last year's grade 7 and 8 students put forth a great deal of effort campaigning friends and family members to join Turnbull's annual NHL hockey pool, raising a total of $1750 for a charity of their choice (the United Way). This year's group has decided to run the hockey pool for the benefit of Help Lesotho, an international development organization working in the AIDS-ravaged country of Lesotho in southern Africa. From www.helplesotho.org "Help Lesotho’s programs foster hope and motivation in those who are most in need: orphans, vulnerable children, at-risk youth and grandmothers. Our work targets root causes and community priorities, including literacy, youth leadership training, school twinning, child sponsorship and gender programming. Help Lesotho is an effective, sustainable organization that is working at the grass-roots level to support the next generation of leaders in Lesotho." Your participation in this year's NHL hockey pool is very much appreciated. We believe it will provide students and their friends and families an opportunity to have fun together while giving back to their community by raising awareness and funds for a great cause. Prizes: > Grand Prize awarded to contestant whose team accumulates the most points over the regular NHL season = 10" Samsung Galaxy Tablet > Monthly Prizes awarded to the contestants whose teams accumulate the most points over each designated period (see website) = Two Movie Passes How it Works: > Everyone in the community is welcome to join in on the fun.

Nine Jets players who appeared in that game remain with the team: Kyle Connor, Nikolaj Ehlers, Connor Hellebuyck, Patrik Laine, Adam Lowry, Josh Morrissey, Mathieu Perreault, Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler. Current Calgary goaltender Cam Talbot started for Edmonton in that contest, stopping all 31 shots he faced for the third shutout in outdoor NHL game history. Current Jets forward Mark Letestu scored the winning goal (while shorthanded), as a member of the Oilers. And current Flames forward Milan Lucic recorded two penalty minutes for Edmonton. Calgary served as hosts for the 2011 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at McMahon Stadium, defeating the Montreal Canadiens 4-0. Two players who appeared in that game remain with the Flames: Mikael Backlund and Mark Giordano. Overall, the Jets feature 11 players who have participated in a prior outdoor NHL game (minimum: 1 GP in 2019-20), while the Flames have four. Talbot leads that group with four such appearances, though he served as a backup goaltender for three of them (2014 SS w/ NYR [2 GP], 2019 SS w/ PHI).

Prairie to Peak A PUBLICATION OF THE ALS SOCIETY OF ALBERTA DECEMBER 2017 IN THIS ISSUE 1. Making it Possible 2. Support for Champions 3 Volunteer Appreciation 4. WALK for ALS 5. Client Services Conference 6. Community Events 7. Research Update 8. Support Groups 9. Ways of Giving Making it Possible Another hockey season has begun, and Mikael Backlund has continued to host our families at a game every month! Thank you Mikael for making these memories with the ALS community! Uncorked for ALS On Friday November 10, the Calgary Flames Foundation hosted Uncorked for ALS, raising awareness and funds for ALS research. The fundraiser was inspired by Mikael Backlund and his fiancée Frida Engstrom, who lost her mom to ALS in Sweden. We are so fortunate to have the support of the Calgary Flames community. 2 Giving Tuesday Most people know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but now Giving Tuesday has taken Canada by storm by encouraging a day of charitable giving. November 28 marked the 2017 Giving Tuesday, and the ALS Society of Alberta celebrated by raising funds for the Support for Champions program. This program allows children whose parents are affected by ALS to participate in childhood activities that may not be available to them due to the immense financial burden of ALS. My son, Owen, received money for his basketball season this year from the Support for Champions program. His father has been “living with ALS for the past five years. Owen loves playing basketball, skiing, biking, snowboarding and playing video games. When he is visiting his dad, he makes paper airplanes to hang in his room.
