  • Librologie 8 : Les Petits Cœurs De Tatie Nina

  • Tragedy, Euripides, Melodrama: Hamartia, Medea, Liminality
Vol. 5 (2013) | pp. 143-171 http://dx.doi.org/10.5209/rev_AMAL.2013.v5.42932 TRAGEDY, EURIPIDES, MELODRAMA: HAMARTIA, MEDEA, LIMINALITY BRIAN G. CARAHER QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND [email protected] Article received on 29.01.2013 Accepted on 06.07.2013 ABSTRACT This article examines socio-historical dimensions and cultural and dramaturgic implications of the Greek playwright Euripides’ treatment of the myth of Medea. Euripides gives voice to victims of adventurism, aggression and betrayal in the name of ‘reason’ and the ‘state’ or ‘polity.’ Medea constitutes one of the most powerful mythic forces to which he gave such voice by melodramatizing the disturbing liminality of Greek tragedy’s perceived social and cultural order. The social polity is confronted by an apocalyptic shock to its order and its available modes of emotional, rational and social interpretation. Euripidean melodramas of horror dramatize the violation of rational categories and precipitate an abject liminality of the tragic vision of rational order. The dramaturgy of Euripides’ Medea is contrasted with the norms of Greek tragedy and examined in comparison with other adaptations — both ancient and contemporary — of the myth of Medea, in order to unfold the play’s transgression of a tragic vision of the social polity. KEYWORDS Dramaturgy, Euripides, liminality, Medea, melodrama, preternatural powers, social polity, tragedy.

THE LEGACY OF AMERICAN PHOTOJOURNALISM IN KEN BURNS’S VIETNAM WAR DOCUMENTARY SERIES Camille Rouquet LARCA/Paris Sciences et Lettres In his review of The Vietnam War, the 18-hour-long documentary series directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick released in September 2017, New York Times television critic James Poniewozik wrote: “The Vietnam War” is not Mr. Burns’s most innovative film. Since the war was waged in the TV era, the filmmakers rely less exclusively on the trademark “Ken Burns effect” pans over still images. Since Vietnam was the “living-room war,” played out on the nightly news, this documentary doesn’t show us the fighting with new eyes, the way “The War” did with its unearthed archival World War II footage.

We’ve added a significant number of new titles to the list and 2009 promises to be a bumper year. It’s wonderful to have two classic references available in paperback for the first time ever—Macdonald’s Princeton Encyclopedia of Mammals and Perrins’ Princeton Encyclopedia of Birds. These are outstanding books that belong on every naturalist’s shelf. A new Lars Jonsson book is always cause for celebration, and in Lars Jonsson’s Birds we have a mouthwatering collection of much of the master’s recent work, once again confirming him as the doyen of wildlife artists. Jeremy Mynott’s Birdscapes is an intriguing and elegant study of man’s enduring interrelationship with birds, at once insightful, amusing, and informative. We have also just published three new titles in our Princeton Field Guides series, and particular attention should be given to Mark Brazil’s magnificent Birds of East Asia, which covers Japan, Taiwan, Korea, and the eastern Asian seaboard, an area lacking a unifying guide until now, and to Dennis Paulson’s Dragonflies and Damselflies of the West, a richly illustrated, authoritative photographic guide, soon to be followed by a volume on the East.

The Call Is Places Welcome from Artistic Director Joseph Haj 2016–2017 SEASON Dear Friends, Sense and Sensibility To make a life in the theater is a bold choice, as the path to the stage is September 10 – October 29, 2016 hardly a direct one. It comes with insecurity, both financial and personal, Wurtele Thrust Stage instability and public critique. How many of us actors and artists, as teenagers, had that brave conversation with our parents when we swore The Parchman Hour allegiance to a dream in the footlights and they did all they could to dissuade October 1 – November 6, 2016 us? Looking back, it’s hard to fault them. Guaranteed work this is not. McGuire Proscenium Stage What theater is though, is a calling – to hone a craft, to entertain, to find A Christmas Carol meaning in the act of storytelling. And as depicted in George S. Kaufman November 16 – December 30, 2016 and Edna Ferber’s The Royal Family, theater is the connective tissue Wurtele Thrust Stage between generations. Sure, there are moments in the play when Kaufman and Ferber seem to be satirizing the Cavendish family of thespians – lest any The Lion in Winter actor ever take him or herself too seriously. But there are also extraordinarily November 19 – December 31, 2016 poignant moments when relationships must be considered and hard McGuire Proscenium Stage decisions made by the Cavendish women, all of whom find themselves at a crossroads between their vocation and a The Royal Family decidedly different way of life. January 28 – March 19, 2017 McGuire Proscenium Stage There’s broad comedy, and there’s also beautiful nuance to be found in this nearly century-old King Lear story in terms of what’s uplifting and what can February 11 – April 2, 2017 be heartbreaking about a theatrical pursuit.
