VOLUME 50, NUMBER 2 ]53 Any reade r who knew the British butterflies in the 1950s and before will have memories of rich localities, of pastures, woods and downland from which once common species have long vanished, even if the land seems superficially to have survved. This book misses no opportunity for optimism, however: a few expanding ranges, of the Essex Skipper (Thymelicl1s lineola), the Speckled Wood (Pararge aegeria), and perhaps the White Admiral (Ladoga camilla), are recorded, together with current conservation efforts to keep now highly restricted and threatened species on the British l.'st. To read this book in conjunction with South or Frohawk reveals the general and rapid decline of a fauna, for long relatively stable, for which the blame lies almost entirely with habitat change and degradation, in their richly varied aspects. The illustrations, by Richard Lewington, have neve r, ill my vi.cw, been surpassed. Each butterfly is shown by an upperside (of both sexes where appreciably dimorphic) in "set" position, and by an underside in "perching" pose. British lepidopterists have for long paid much attention to aberrations, and many very remarkable examples of these variants are shown. Other figures, illustrating the butterflies at rest or nectaring are particularly striking through Lewington's use of black and white pencil for the plart or other perching site, against which the beauty of the painted butterflies is seen to best advantage. The effect achieved, for example, by a mating pair of Black Hairstreaks (Strymonidia pruni) on a penciled blackthorn twig, of a male Purple Hairstreak (Ql1ercl1sia quercus) basking on a an oak twig, or the once widespread but now endange red High Brown Fritillary (Argyrmis adippe) perching on a bramble, selected for the title page, is brilliant. -

Climate Ready Trees for Central Valley Communities
The goal of this study is to evaluate the survival and growth of seldom used but promising trees in the Central Valley. We can create more resilient Climate Ready Trees for urban forests by shifting the palate of trees planted to those proven to Central Valley Communities perform best when exposed to climate stressors such as heat, drought, high winds, pests, disease and soil salinity. 1. Mulga (Acacia aneura) Mulga is native to arid Western Australia and tolerates hot and dry conditions. It can grow in sandy, loam, or clay soil types. This versatile and hardy tree produces ascending thornless branches and grows 15 to 20 feet in height. The evergreen foliage is gray-green and the tree has yellow flowers in the spring. Maintain leader to avoid suckering. 2. Netleaf Hackberry (Celtis reticulata) The Netleaf Hackberry is native to riparian areas in the Southwest. A deciduous tree, it reaches heights of 25 to 35 feet with a spreading or weeping canopy. The ovate leaves are medium green and turn yellow in the fall. The flowers mature into red drupes that attract birds. The Netleaf Hackberry is drought tolerant and able to thrive in variety of soil types. 3. Desert Willow (Chilopsis linearis ‘Bubba’) The Desert Willow is a small flowering desert tree native to California and the Southwest. The cultivar Bubba can reach 25 to 30 feet with a spread of 20 to 25 feet. It has profuse, long- lasting blooms. The showy flowers are pink and white. Leaves are linear blue green and turn golden in the fall. -

Family Nyctaginaceae Plant description Macfarlane’s four o’clock is a stout perennial that forms hemispheric clumps 0.6-1.2 m in diameter, with several freely branched decumbent or ascending stems that are glabrous to sparsely puberulent. The leaves are opposite and fleshy, the lower blades orbicular to ovate-deltoid, the upper narrowly ovate. The petioles of lower leaves are 1- 2.5 cm long; upper leaves are nearly sessile. Flowers are clustered (4-7) in involucres borne on stalks about 1 cm long in the upper axils and on shoot apices. The conspicuous involucres are green to purplish, 1.3-2.5 cm long. The showy perianth is magenta, broadly funnelform, and 1.5-2.5 cm long, the limb slightly longer than the tube. The ellipsoid fruits are light brown to grayish, with 10 slender ribs visible when wet, 6-9 mm long, tuberculate, glabrous or very sparsely puberulent. Distinguishing characteristics No other Mirabilis species occur within the range of Macfarlane’s four o’clock. Mirabilis laevis var. retrorsa has shorter involucres (0.5-0.7 cm long), a white to pale pink perianth, and ranges from Malheur and Harney Counties in Oregon southward. Macfarlane’s four o’clock is most closely related to M. multiflora var. glandulosa and M. greenei, which occur in Nevada and California, respectively, and have longer involucres and larger perianths. -

TARTAGLIA Dissertation Director: Steven N. Handel ! In this dissertation I examined the ecology of moths of the family Sphingidae in New Jersey and elucidated some previously unknown aspects of their behavior as floral visitors. In Chapter 2, I investigated differences in moth abundance and diversity between urban and suburban habitat types. Suburban sites have higher moth abundance and diversity than urban sites. I compared nighttime light intensities across all sites to correlate increased nighttime light intensity with moth abundance and diversity. Urban sites had significantly higher nighttime light intensity, a factor that has been shown to negatively affect the behavior of moths. I analyzed moths’ diets based on pollen grains swabbed from the moths’ bodies. These data were inconclusive due to insufficient sample sizes. In Chapter 3, I examined similar questions regarding diurnal Sphingidae of the genus Hemaris and found that suburban sites had higher moth abundances and diversities than urban sites. -

Pl an t Gu i d e Description MACFARLANE’S General: Four-o’clock family (Nyctaginaceae). MacFarlane’s four-o’clock is a perennial herb that FOUR-O’CLOCK forms hemispheric clumps from 23 to 32 inches across (Spellenberg, 2003). The inflorescence is a Mirabilis macfarlanei cluster of 3 to 7 magenta flowers, each approximately Constance & Rollins 1 inch in diameter. Flowering typically occurs from Plant Symbol = MIMA2 May to early June. Leaves are opposite, green above and waxy below. Executive Summary This survey was a continuation of several years of rare plant survey on San Juan Public Lands. Funding for the project was provided by San Juan National Forest and the San Juan Resource Area of the Bureau of Land Management. Previous rare plant surveys on San Juan Public Lands by CNHP were conducted in conjunction with county wide surveys of La Plata, Archuleta, San Juan and San Miguel counties, with partial funding from Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO); and in 2004, public lands only in Dolores and Montezuma counties, funded entirely by the San Juan Public Lands. Funding for 2005 was again provided by San Juan Public Lands. The primary emphases for field work in 2005 were: 1. revisit and update information on rare plant occurrences of agency sensitive species in the Colorado Natural Heritage Program (CNHP) database that were last observed prior to 2000, in order to have the most current information available for informing the revision of the Resource Management Plan for the San Juan Public Lands (BLM and San Juan National Forest); 2. -

Abstract Administered by the USDA Forest Service, the Kiowa and Rita Blanca National Grasslands occupy 230,000 acres of public land extending from northeastern New Mexico into the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas. A mosaic of topographic features including canyons, plateaus, rolling grasslands and outcrops supports a diverse flora. Eight hundred twenty six (826) species of vascular plant species representing 81 plant families are known to occur on or near these public lands. This report includes a history of the area; ethnobotanical information; an introductory overview of the area including its climate, geology, vegetation, habitats, fauna, and ecological history; and a plant survey and information about the rare, poisonous, and exotic species from the area. A vascular plant checklist of 816 vascular plant taxa in the appendix includes scientific and common names, habitat types, and general distribution data for each species. This list is based on extensive plant collections and available herbarium collections. Authors Donald L. Mirabilis nyctaginea (Michx.) MacMill. Wild four-o’clock Family: Nyctaginaceae Range: All western states except Arizona and Oregon. Habitat: Found in a wide range of habitats, including perennial crops such as orchards and alfalfa fields, waste areas and along roadsides, railroad lines, woodlands, pastures, riparian areas, and dry meadows and rangelands. It is often found on sandy or rocky soil, but can also grow on clay soils or along waterways. It rarely establishes in annually cultivated ground. Origin: Native east of the Rocky Mountains, from Montana to Mexico, and east to Wisconsin and Alabama. Impacts: Wild four-o’clock can spread from small infestations to hundreds of acres very quickly. It colonizes both perennial agriculture and rangelands. It can outcompete pasture and grassland plants. It can compete in the same habitat as Macfarlane’s four-o’clock (Mirabilis macfarlanei), a rare species that is considered threatened in Idaho and endangered in Oregon.
