A couple of Irish trainers do well with their runners in this race with Tony Martin having had 1 win and 2 places from 5 runners while Willie Mullins is 1 win and 1 place from 3 runners. But the stable to look out for in this race is that of the Pipe's. Martin Pipe won this race twice before handing over to son David who won it in 2010. Between them they have won it 3 times and been placed a further 4 times from 24 runners.

TRAINERS WITH THE WORST RECORDS – Since 2000

Since 2000 Sir Michael Stoute is without a win in this race but 7 of his 12 runners have made the frame (including at 16/1 & 20/1) which is a pretty decent return for such a competitive handicap. Both of his runners that had their previous start in a Group race were unplaced.

31 NARROWING THE FIELD

Most races at Royal Ascot are contested by big fields of runners but by analysing the data from previous meetings we are able to narrow the number of horses with a chance in each race to a much more manageable figure.

Unfortunately it doesn't hold true for every race at the meeting but I have selected 10 races that by applying specific criteria to the field you would have been able to pick every winner from 55% or less of the total runners and also made a profit by backing all such types.

33 ROYAL ASCOT TRAINERS

Going back to 2003 there have been 13 trainers to have had 5 or more winners at the Royal Meeting. Top of the pile is.....

AIDEN O'BRIEN

The Irish trainer is the most successful current trainer at the Royal meeting with 25 winners in the last 10 years from 155 runners (16% strike rate). A further 28 of his runners made the frame. Backing all his runners would though have lost you 32.6pts at level stakes.

Wins Places Runners Win LSP/L Handicaps 0 2 10 -10 Group 1 14 10 63 -4.42 Group 2 5 7 36 -19.45 Group 3 3 5 26 +6.00 Listed 2 4 20 -7.50 2yo races 3 7 36 -23.75 3yo races 9 13 78 -16.35

• All 25 of his winners were rested at least 2 weeks since their last run • All 12 of his runners over 5f have been beaten (just 2 placed) • Only 1 of his winners (from 62 runners) has been over 8/1 • 23 of his 25 winners ran in Listed class or better on their previous start

Aiden O'Brien doesn't run very many older horses at Royal Ascot but they're worth noting when he sends one over. Of his 12 runners aged 5 and over, 7 have won (58%) and another 2 have been placed. They show a Level Stakes Profit (LSP) of +12.7pts. He's managed at least 1 such winner every year he has had an older runner at the meeting.

Simply backing all Aiden O'Brien horses in Group 1 or Group 2 races that have started favourite would have given you 15 winners from 27 runners (55%) and made a LSP of +17.6pts

TOP TRAINER SYSTEM

Back any Aiden O'Brien runner over 6 furlongs or further that has been rested for at least a 31 days and is 8/1 or shorter in the betting.

Since 2003, this would have given you 14 winners (and 4 places) from 32 runners. The win strike rate is 43.75% and they show a LSP of +38.3pts

This system would have given you at least 1 winner and a LSP for every Royal Ascot between 2004-2011

34 MARK JOHNSTON

It might come as a surprise to find northern trainer Mark Johnston as second in the list of current trainers for wins at the Royal Ascot meeting since 2003 but his record of 19 winners is one better than Sir Michael Stoute and 5+ clear of the rest. His 19 winners have come from 184 runners at a strike rate of 10.3% and show a LSL of -23.3pts. A further 17 runners made the frame. He's managed at least one winner at every Royal Ascot since 2003 bar 2008 when his 16 runners were all unplaced.

Simply backing the Johnson runners in Group 3 contests since 2003 would have given you 7 winners from 17 runners at a strike rate of 41% and made you a LSP of +21.6pts.

Backing all his horses on the Friday of the meeting who are running over a mile or further would have given you 9 winners from 33 runners (27.3%) and made a LSP of +26.5pts. There has been at least one winner for every Royal Ascot meeting since 2003 bar the 2008 Season.

TOP TRAINER SYSTEM

Back any Mark Johnson 3yo or 4yo male that is running over 1m2f or further and is rated 85-104.

You would have had 14 winners and 4 places from 54 runners at a win strike rate of 26%.

Since 2003 you would have had at least 1 winner at every Royal Ascot, bar the 2008 debacle, and made an overall LSP of +85.5pts.

35 Sir MICHAEL STOUTE

Sir Michael Stoute drew a blank in 2011 from his 7 runners but has had at least 1 winner in each of the other 8 Royal Ascot's since 2003. His overall record since then is 18 winners and 40 places from 141 runners which is a win strike rate of 12.8% and a place strike rate of an impressive 41%. You would however have lost -45.8pts backing all his runners at level stakes.

Backing all his runners in Group 2 and Group 3 races that were 8/1 or shorter would have given you 11 winners and 10 places from 34 runners. They made a LSP of +14.3pts and would have provided at least one winner in 7 of the last 9 Royal meetings.

Ryan Moore has ridden 9 winners from 57 rides (16% strike rate) for the Stoute stable with a further 17 making the frame. You would have made a small level stakes loss of -5.8pts but by only backing his mounts that were 8/1 or shorter you would have made a LSP of +11.2pts.

TOP TRAINER SYSTEM

Back any Stoute runner that has had at least 4 starts, finished 3rd or worse last time out and is 10/1 or under.

36 JOHN GOSDEN

John Gosden has trained at least 1 winner for every Royal Ascot since drawing a blank in 2003. He has had 14 winners from his last 121 runners (11.6% strike rate) but can claim another 26 have been placed meaning that 1 in 3 of all Gosden runners at Royal Ascot have made the frame. He had his best year in 2012 when 5 of his 19 runners won. Backing all his runners blind would have lost you -22.4pts since 2003.

7 of his winners were female and came from just 30 such runners (23% strike rate). Backing all his female runners blind would have won you +16.3pts at level stakes. 50% of all his female runners made the frame.

Just by solely backing his 4yo horses at Royal Ascot you would have had 7 winners and 5 places from 26 runners. They show a LSP of +32.5pts

37 SAEED BIN SUROOR

Since 2003 he's had 14 winners and 20 places from his 127 runners. That's a strike rate of 11% and backing all his runners would have lost you -13.8pts. He had a blank year in 2006 when just one of his 8 runners even managed to make the frame and again in 2011 when just 2 of his 10 runners were placed. His best Royal Ascot came in 2004 when he trained 6 winners and 4 places from 26 runners (23%).

Up until 2012, Frankie Dettori had ridden all 14 Bin Suroor winners. He has since been replaced as the retained jockey for the stable but it does seem to show that the Bin Suroor main runner in a race is the one to focus on.

Backing any Bin Suroor runner in a Royal Ascot Group 1 or Group 2 race that is 12/1 or shorter would have given you 10 winners from 49 runners (20%) and a LSP of +17.2pts

Backing Bin Suroor horses that ran in a Group 1 race on their start would have given you 6 winners from 20 runners (30% strike rate) and a LSP of +18.7pts

TOP TRAINER SYSTEM

Back any 3 or 4yo from the Bin Suroor runner that is not down in trip, carries 8-09 – 9-00 and is running over 7f+.

You would have had at least 1 winner in 5 out of 8 Royal Ascot meetings since 2003 and made an overall LSP of +53.7pts.

38 RICHARD HANNON

Richard Hannon may have trained 14 winners at the Royal meeting since 2003 but they have come at the expense of 189 runners which is a strike rate of just 7.4%. You would have lost -59.4pts betting all his horses to level stakes. He drew a blank from his 9 runners in 2003 but recovered to send out at least 1 winner a year for the next 7 Royal Ascots. This good run came to a grinding halt last year when all 31 of his runners got beat with just 5 making the frame.

Simply backing the Hannon horse that is ridden by Richard Hughes would have given you 14 winners from 95 runners (15%) and would have shown a LSP of +34.6pts

All 37 of Richard Hannon's runners that were ridden by Ryan Moore have been beaten. 8 of the 37 made the frame.

TOP TRAINER SYSTEM

You would have had 13 winners and 6 places from 52 runners at a win strike rate of 25%.

From 2004 -2011 you would have had at least 1 winner at every Royal Ascot and made an overall LSP of +51.6pts.

39 JAMES FANSHAWE

Over the last few years James Fanshawe has probably got the best record of any trainer at Royal Ascot. He has sent out 8 winners and 13 places from just 39 runners for a win and place strike rate of over 50%. Simply backing his horses blind would have made you +47.4pts since 2003 and he had at least 1 horse make the frame for every meeting from 2003-2011. He did however suffer a minor blip last season when all 5 of his runners finished unplaced.

• All his winners have been over a distance of 6f – 1m • All his winners were aged 3-6yo

TOP TRAINER SYSTEM

Back any Fanshawe runner aged 3-6yo that isn't upped in trip compared to it's last run.

You would have had 8 winners and 10 places from 30 runners at a win strike rate of 26.7% and an overall LSP of +56.4pts.

20 of the 30 finished in the top 4 and include winners at 10/1, 14/1 & 25/1 with places at 14/1, 20/1, 25/1 & 50/1

MICK CHANNON

Mick Channon has trained the same amount of winners as Fanshawe but from a much bigger number of runners. He has sent 159 horses to the Royal Meeting since 2003 for his 8 winners which is a low strike rate of 5% but amazingly his level stakes loss is just -6.00. He's had plenty of Royal meetings where he's gone home empty handed including last year when his 16 runners were all beaten.

• All 25 of his runners that were dropped in trip compared to their last start were beaten • All 8 of his winners carried between 8-11 - 9-02 • All 8 of his winners were aged 2-4yo • All 8 of his winners had their last start in the previous 32 days

TOP TRAINER SYSTEM

Back any Channon 2yo or 4yo runner carrying 8-11 – 9-02 that has run within the last 32 days.

You would have had 7 winners and 6 places from 40 runners at a win strike rate of 17.5% and an overall LSP of +104pts.

The 13 win and placed horses include winners at odds of 16/1, 25/1, 33/1 & 50/1 with places at 33/1 twice

40 HUGHIE MORRISON

For a small stable Hughie Morrison puts a few of the big name trainers to shame with his excellent Royal Ascot record from limited runners. Since 2003 he has had 6 winners from 47 runners (12.8%) along with another 6 who made the frame. This means that 1 in 4 of his horses were placed. Backing all his runners would have made you a LSP of +39pts.

• All 13 of his runners that were upped in class by 2 or more grades were beaten • All 10 of his Group 1 and Group 2 runners were beaten (just 1 placed) • All 10 of his runners outside the 3-6yo age bracket were unplaced • All 9 of his runners over 2m4f or further ran unplaced • All 9 of his winners carried 8-11 or more and were rated 91 – 107 • All 6 of his winners had raced at least 6 times in their career

WILLIAM HAGGAS

He's managed at least 1 placed horse at every Royal Ascot since 2003 with the odd winner here and there along the way. 6 winners and 9 places from 61 runners at a win strike rate of 10% and a LSP of +11pts are all pretty decent figures but would be even better but for all 10 of his runners being beaten in 2011.

• All 32 of his runners rated 98 or higher have been beaten • All 22 of his runners that were upped in trip by a furlong or more were beaten • All 8 of his Group 1 runners have been beaten. 41 JEREMY NOSEDA

His last winner at Royal Ascot came in 2010 and he's had 15 losers at the last two Royal meetings but he has managed at least 1 placed horse every year since 2003. His overall record is 6 winners from 78 runners (7.7%) with a further 20 horses making the frame. He shows a level stakes loss of -47.25pts.

• All 23 of his runners moved up in trip compared to their last start were beaten • All 16 of his runners in Group 2 races have been beaten • All 10 of his runners that had their last start in the previous 15 days were beaten • All 6 of his winners came over a distance of 5f – 1m • All 6 of his winners were 12/1 or under • All 6 of his winners carried 8-11 – 9-04 • All 6 of his winners finished in the top 6 last time out

You would have had 6 winners and 6 places from 18 runners at a win strike rate of 33.3% and made an overall LSP of +12.75pts..

Sir HENRY CECIL

Gone are the days when Henry Cecil dominated Royal Ascot and you were guaranteed at least one winner every year simply by backing all the stables runners. His well documented troubles meant few runners from 2003 onwards and he went from 2003 – 2008 without having a winner at his favourite meeting. Although he'll never recapture the glory days of the 80's and 90's he has managed at least 1 winner a year at the last 4 Royal meetings and now has figures of 5 winners and 16 places from his last 54 runners. That's a strike rate of 9.3% and you would have made a level stakes loss of -30.1pts since 2003.

All 5 winners were all 3 or 4yo's racing over a distance of 1m – 1m4f, had at least 4 career starts, had run in the last 45 days and were 9/1 or under in the betting.

TOP TRAINER SYSTEM

You would have had 5 winners and 3 places from 10 runners at a win strike rate of 50% and made an overall LSP of +13.9pts.

42 MICHAEL BELL

Michael Bell has had 5 winners at Royal Ascot since 2003 although they all came in the years 2006-2009. His 22 runners at the last 3 Royal meetings have all been beaten with just 4 making the frame. His overall figures are 5 winners and 11 places from 60 runners at a strike rate of 8.3%. Thanks to a 20/1 and a 33/1 winner he does however show a LSP of +15.5pts.

• All 6 of his runners that were dropped in trip compared to their last start ran unplaced • All 5 of his winners came over 6f – 1m. He's had 22 losers over 1m2f+ since 2003 • All 5 of his winners were aged 2 or 3. He's had 17 losers aged 4 or over. • All 5 of his winners carried 8-11 or more. 43 ROYAL ASCOT JOCKEYS

There are 12 jockeys who are currently riding and have had 5 or more winners at Royal Ascot since 2003. Most successful of these is......

JOHNNY MURTAGH

Overall, since 2003, his record is 23 winners from 152 rides which is a strike rate of 15.1%. Backing all his mounts would have made a LSP of +30.7pts.

Unfortunately most of Johnny Murtagh's Royal Ascot wins came while he was riding for the powerful Aiden O'Brien stable between 2007 and 2010. Since being relieved of that job he has managed 3 winners from 32 rides and before being appointed it was 3 winners from 35 rides.

Because of this, his figures may be distorted and the stats may not now give a true indication of a typical Murtagh winner. Worth noting though, is......

He's not called 'Group 1 Johnny' for nothing as he's had 10 wins from 36 rides (28%) in the highest company and shows a LSP of +9.8pts. 16 of his 23 winners came in Group races.

All 7 of his mounts when riding at 8-10 or less have been beaten as have all 7 mounts when riding at 9-08 or above.

His record on 2yo's is 2 winners from 30 rides which is just a 7% strike rate. On 4yo's he's 9 winners from 36 rides which is a 25% strike rate and they show a LSP of +36.6pts.

FRANKIE DETTORI

The second winning-most jockey at Royal Ascot since 2003 is Frankie Dettori with 19 winners from his 220 rides. That's a strike rate of 8.6% and all his mounts show a LSL of -60.8pts.

He's had at least 1 winner at every Royal Ascot since 2003 with his best year coming in 2004 when he rode 6 winners and 5 places from 27 rides.

All these figures were recorded while riding as No.1 stable jockey for the massive Godolphin operation but he, like Murtagh, has now been relieved of his important retainer. Again, we can no longer trust the stats as Frankie now goes freelance but it might be worth noting that......

• All 32 of his rides over 5f have been beaten. • All 22 of his rides on horses aged 6 and older were beaten. • All 5 of his rides at 8-08 or under were unplaced. • He managed just 1 winner from 48 rides when riding at 9-04 or more. • He rode 2 winners aged 2yo from 46 rides. • 15 of his 19 wins came in Group company • 14 of his 19 wins came for Saeed Bin Suroor

His record on 4yo's since 2003 is 7 wins and 9 places from 46 rides (15% win strike rate). They show a LSP of +26.2pts

44 RICHARD HUGHES

Since 2003 he's ridden 18 winners from 183 rides (9.8%) and backing all his mounts would have shown a level stakes loss of -22.4pts. He managed at least 1 winning ride a year from 2003 - 2007 and at least 2 wins from 2008 – 2011 but it all came to a grinding halt last year when his 22 rides were all beaten and only 1 made the frame.

Not surprisingly, over 50% of all his rides and 14 of his 18 winners came from the Richard Hannon stable. Since 2003 his figures are 14 winners from 95 rides at a strike rate of 15%. Even with last years disaster for the Hannon/Hughes combination you would still have made a Level Stakes Profit of 34.6pts backing all their runners since 2003. His other 4 winners came for Roger Charlton (2 wins from 4 rides LSP +14pts), Jane Chapple-Hyam (1 win from 2 rides LSP +5.5pts) and Sir Michael Stoute (1 win from 4 rides LSP +1.5pts).

He rode 16 of his 18 winners on their last run as well. The other 2 winners he replaced Pat Dobbs. Since 2003, if you had backed those Hughes runners that were ridden by Hughes or Dobbs on their previous start you would have had 18 winners from 103 rides (17.5%) and made a LSP of +57.59pts.

All 18 of his winners carried 8-11 – 9-07. He's 1 place from 24 rides outside this weight band. All 18 of his winners were aged 2 – 4yo. He has ridden 42 losers aged 5 or older. All 17 times he has ridden at 8-10 or less he has finished unplaced. 16 of his 18 winners came over a distance of 5f – 1m. He's 2 winners from 55 rides at 1m2f+ 16 of his 18 winners were 12/1 or shorter. He's 2 winners from 90 rides at 14/1 or bigger Only 1 of his 18 winners came on the Thursday of the meeting

RICHARD HUGHES JOCKEY SYSTEM

Give him the day off on the Thursday and back him over a distance of 5f – 1m on those aged 2-4yo carrying 8-11 – 9-07.

This would have given you 16 winners from 78 rides (20.5%) and shown a level stakes profit of +69.59

You would also have had one winner in the years 2004 – 2007, 2 winners in 2003 & 2008 and 3 winners from 2009-2011. Unfortunately, all 10 runners were unplaced in 2012.

45 RYAN MOORE

Since 2003 he's ridden 18 winners from 194 rides (9.3%) and backing all his mounts would have shown a big level stakes loss of -£85.85. But all 18 of his winners have come in the last 5 years (since joining Sir Michael Stoute as stable jockey) at a rate of at least 3 wins a year.....

2012...5 – 24 2011...3 – 30 2010...4 – 30 2006...3 – 29 2007...3 – 25

His record before that was very poor.....

2007...0 – 20 2006...0 – 23 2004...0 – 10 2003...0 – 3

So let's just concentrate on his mounts since 2007 which is 18 winners from 138 rides (13%).

Three interesting facts about his winners and losers.....

• Ryan Moore has never ridden a Group 1 winner at Royal Ascot (30 losers since 2003) • Ryan Moore has never ridden a winner over 5f at Royal Ascot (18 losers since 2003) • All Ryan Moore ridden winners have been 10/1 or less (51 losers above 10/1)

RYAN MOORE JOCKEY SYSTEM

Forget his rides in Group 1 races, forget his rides over 5f and don't back any of his mounts that are 11/1 or above.

Following these 3 simple rules for all Ryan Moore rides since 2007 would have given you 18 winners and 18 places from 63 mounts (28.6%) and a LSP of 45.15pts.

Year Winners Placed Rides Strike Rate Profit / Loss 2012 5 0 11 45% +16.75 2011 3 3 13 23% -2.83 2010 4 6 12 33% +15.23 2009 3 5 13 23% +12.00 2008 3 4 14 21% +4.00 Totals 18 18 63 28.6% 45.15

46 JAMIE SPENCER

It might come as a surprise to some that Jamie Spencer sits quite high in the list of winning- most jockeys at Royal Ascot since 2003 but his record of 16 wins from159 rides (10%) and a LSP of +18pts looks quite decent. However a closer inspection of his statistics shows that 14 of his 16 winners came in the period 2003 – 2009 and at the last three Royal Ascot meetings he's managed just 2 winners from 46 rides and drew a blank in both 2010 & 2012.

• All 21 of his rides carrying 9-03 or more have been beaten. • All 9 of his rides aged 7 and over have finished unplaced.

On runners in 1 mile races his record is 7 winners from 43 rides (16%) and a LSP of +17.4pts On female runners his record is 6 winners from 36 rides (17%) and a LSP of +52.4pts On 2yo runners his record is 5 winners from 27 rides (19%) and a LSP of +67.5pts

JAMIE SPENCER JOCKEY SYSTEM

Back him on 2yo & 3yo's over a distance of 6f – 1m2f when carrying 8-07 – 8-12.

Since 2003 this would have given you 7 winners from 23 rides (30%) and a LSP of +88pts

JIMMY FORTUNE

Jimmy Fortune is another jockey who has found it hard going at recent Royal Ascot meetings with just 1 winner from his last 44 rides and a blank in both 2010 and 2012. His overall record since 2003 is 11 winners and 26 places from 137 rides at a strike rate of 8%. He shows a Level Stakes Loss of -23.2pts on all those rides.

• All 20 of his rides at 8-11 or less have been beaten • All 11 of his winners were 20/1 or under. He's ridden 54 losers at 22/1 or bigger • He rode 9 of his 11 winners on their previous start as well. • His record on 2yo's is 1 winner and 3 places from 30 rides • He's 1 winner from 23 rides in Group 1 races and 0 winners from 21 in Listed contests.

JIMMY FORTUNE JOCKEY SYSTEM

Forget Group 1 races and back him on horses he rode last time out that now carry 8-12 or more and are 20/1 or under.

Since 2003 this would have given you 8 winners and 5 places from 34 rides (23.5%) and a LSP of +53.8pts

47 KIEREN FALLON

Things haven't been so easy for Kieran Fallon since coming back from his ban in 2010. From 2003 – 2006 he rode 3 winners at each of the Royal Ascot meetings but he has managed just 2 winners total from 2010-2012. In 2011 he drew a blank from all 16 of his rides (6 placed).

So with just 6 years of data with half of it when riding as a freelance there's not a lot to go on.

• 10 of his 11 winners came over a distance of 1 mile or further. • He's 0 winners from 16 rides at 5f, 1 from 21 at 6f and 0 from 13 at 7f. • He's won on just 1 of his 47 rides in handicaps although 15 have been placed. • All 11 of his winners were 9/1 or under. All 60 of his rides at 10/1 or bigger have lost • All 11 of his winners carried 8-12 –9-05. He's ridden 39 losers outside this weight band

His record in Group 1 races is 5 winners and 9 places from 28 rides for a LSP of +3.1pts. 50% of all his rides in Group 1 races have made the frame.

KIERAN FALLON JOCKEY SYSTEM

Back him in Group 1 or Group 2 races only, when carrying 8- 12 -9-02 and he's 9/1 or under.

Since 2003 this would have given you 8 winners from 22 rides (36.4%) and a LSP of +24.8pts

WILLIAM BUICK

William Buick rode his first winner at Royal Ascot in 2007 but had to wait until 2011 before riding his next one (there were 36 losers in between). With 7 winners at the last two Royal meetings it means his figures are now 8 wins from 75 rides (10.7%) for a small LSP of +3pts.

• All his winners were aged 2-4yo. He's just 1 placed from 20 rides on 5yo's and over • All of his last 7 winners were for John Gosden (since being retained as stable jockey) • His 7 winners for John Gosden were all 12/1 or under.

WILLIAM BUICK JOCKEY SYSTEM

Simply back him on any runner from the John Gosden stable that is 12/1 or under.

Since 2010 this would have given you 7 winners and 3 places from 21 rides (33.3%) and a LSP of +34pts

48 STEVE DROWNE

Undoubtedly the number one jockey for profits made over the last few years. From his 59 rides since 2003 he's managed 7 wins (11.9%) and 6 places and shows a staggering level stakes profit of +131.50pts! Since 2007 alone he's ridden winners at 12/1 20/1, 28/1 and 100/1!

• All 15 of his rides in Group races have been beaten. Just 2 placed • All 12 of his rides on the Wednesday of the meeting have finished unplaced • All 11 of his rides carrying 9-04 or more have been beaten. Just 2 placed • All 10 of his rides carrying 8-09 or less have been beaten. Just 1 placed • All 8 of his winners were aged 2-5yo although all 10 rides on 4yo's have been beaten

In Listed races he's 3 wins and 1 place from 10 rides (30%) for a LSP of +110pts

STEVE DROWNE JOCKEY SYSTEM

Forget his rides in Group races and simply back him in all other races when carrying 8-10 – 9-03.

Since 2003 this would have given you 7 winners from 26 rides (26.9%) and a LSP of +164.50pts

EDDIE AHERN

Eddie Ahern doesn't seem to get the big number of rides he used to at this meeting but bizarrely as his number of rides has decreased his winners have increased with 5 of his 7 winners coming at the last 4 Royal Meetings from just 27 rides. His overall record since 2003 is 7 winners and 4 places from 81 rides (8.6%) for a LSL of -18.25pts.

• All 8 of his rides at 8-07 or less have finished unplaced • All 7 of his winners were 16/1 or shorter. He's ridden 48 losers at 20/1 or bigger • All 6 of his rides in Group 1 races have finished unplaced • Only 1 of his 7 winners was on a female horse (from 20 rides) • Two of his 7 winners have come when riding for Nicky Henderson (from 5 rides)

EDDIE AHERN JOCKEY SYSTEM

Simply back him on male horses (colts and geldings) that are 16/1 or shorter in the betting.

49 JOE FANNING

Joe Fanning has ridden 5 winners from 61 rides at Royal Ascot since 2003 at a strike rate of 8.2%. You would have broken even backing all his runners.

All 5 winners were on 3 & 4yo's from the Mark Johnston stable.

JOE FANNING JOCKEY SYSTEM

Back him on Mark Johnston 3 & 4yo's running over 1m2f+ at 16/1 or under.

TOM QUEALLY

Tom Queally has ridden 5 winners from 79 rides at Royal Ascot since 2003 at a strike rate of 6.3%. You would have lost -36.6pts backing all his runners to level stakes. He has ridden one winner at each of the last 4 Royal meetings.

3 of his 5 winners were in Group 1 contests. Just 3 of his 5 winners came for the Sir Henry Cecil stable including both of Frankel's wins.

TOM QUEALLY JOCKEY SYSTEM

51 LAY OF THE DAY

Trainers with at least 1 winner and 25 runners at the meeting since 2003. Jockeys with at least 1 winner and 25 rides at the meeting since 2003......

TUESDAY

Traditionally, Sir Michael Stoute doesn't have that many runners on the first day of Royal Ascot but while he's had plenty of successes later in the week he's 0 from 14 on the Tuesday with 4 placings. Dandy Nicholls hasn't even managed to make the frame with any of his 17 runners on the opening day of the meeting. As for the jockeys, Neil Callan has just one placed effort to show for his 18 rides on the opening Tuesday.

WEDNESDAY

Brian Meehan has sent more of his horses to Royal Ascot on the Wednesday than any other day of the meeting but so far he hasn't had much luck with 0 winners and 2 placings from 30 runners. Mick Channon is 0 from 27 on the second day with just 4 of his runners making the frame. Jockey Ted Durcan is 0 winners and 1 place from 17 rides on the Wednesday.

THURSDAY

Richard Hannon has seen all 56 of his runners on Ladies Day get beat with just 11 making the frame. Mick Channon is another trainer who struggles on the Thursday with 0 winners from 39 runners and just 6 placings. Jockeys that don't fare so well on the 3rd day of the meeting include Martin Dwyer (0 wins and 1 place from 19 rides), Darryll Holland (0 wins and 3 places from 19 rides), Ted Durcan (0 wins and 2 places from 16 rides), William Buick (0 wins and 3 places from 16 rides) and Tom Queally (0 wins and 1 place from 15 rides).

FRIDAY

Richard Fahey is 0 from 21 with his Friday runners with just 1 runner making the frame. Kevin Ryan and Clive Brittain are both 0 wins from 16 runners but while Ryan has just the one place on his scoresheet, Brittain has two. Tom Queally has managed 5 placed efforts but no winners from 17 rides on the Friday of the meeting while Ted Durcan is 0 wins and 3 places from the same number of rides. Paul Hanagan failed to even make the frame on any of his 15 runners on the penultimate day of the meeting.

SATURDAY

The last day of the meeting plays host to a couple of big sprints and may explain why Kevin Ryan targets this day more than any other. However he hasn't had much luck on the Saturday with 0 wins and just 1 placed runner from 21. Amanda Perrett and Richard Fahey are another couple of trainers with limited success on the final day. They share identical figures of 0 wins from 17 runners with just 2 from each stable making the places. Neil Callan hasn't had much success over the years at this meeting but his Saturday record of 0 wins 0 places from 23 is the worst of the lot. Jim Crowley is another with a 0 wins and 0 place record but his comes from 17 rides while Martin Dwyer is 0 wins and 0 places from 14 mounts.

TRAINERS

Aiden O'Brien is clear leader in the Group 1 stakes with 14 winners and 10 places to show for his 63 runners since 2003. All 21 of his runners that were 20/1 or higher finished unplaced. All 6 of his runners rated less than 108 have finished unplaced.

Next on the list and some way behind is Saeed Bin Suroor who has 5 Gr.1 wins and 2 places from 51 runners. All 7 win and placed horses were male, aged 4 or 5yo, ran over 1mile or further and were 12/1 or under in the betting. His 7 runners that were under 9/2 have all lost.

All of Brian Smart's 9 runners have finished unplaced as have all 8 of Amanda Perrett's, Clive Brittain's, Peter Chapple-Hyam's and Hughie Morrison.

58 THE DRAW

The track underwent a rebuild in 2005 and part of the redevelopment programme was to try and iron out any draw bias. But by looking at the last 7 years data we can see that some biases do still exist on the sprint track. All races at Ascot (2005 – 2012) with 10 or more runners.

5f Races

1001 runners have contested 64 races over 5f. Of these 64 races, 29 had a field of 16 or more runners and 14 had 20+ runners. There have been 0 winners drawn 23 or over from the 36 horses that ran from these stalls. Only 2 of the 44 runners were placed. Only 1 winner has managed to win from a stall higher than 20 (from 63 runners).

From the 264 runners to have contested the 18 races run on Good to Soft or softer ground there has been no winner to have come from stall 1 (4 of the 17 runners were however placed). 7 of the 19 winners (plus 2 placed) came from Stall 2 or Stall 3. The low to middle numbered Stalls 4 – 10 have provided just 2 of the 19 winners from 116 runners.

It's a pretty similar record when the going is riding Good. 262 runners have contested 16 races but none of the 16 runners to have come from Stall 1 have won (2 were placed). All 14 runners to have come from stalls 23+ have run unplaced and only one winner, from 33 runners, came from a stall higher than 18.

When racing on Good to Firm or Firm ground there have been 475 horses contest 30 races. All 40 runners that came from stall 20 or higher have been beaten with just 1 of the 21 horses drawn 22 or higher even managing a place. Only 3 winners from 108 runners have come from a draw 15 or higher. Stalls 1-7 have won 15 (50%) of all the races.

6f Races

1442 runners have contested 92 races over 6f or 6½f. Of these 92 races, 39 had a field of 16 or more runners and 22 had 20+ runners. Only 1 winner (stall 30) has managed to win from a draw higher than 24 (from 62 runners). A further 4 were placed.

From the 426 runners to have contested the 28 races run on Good to Soft or softer ground there has been no winner to have come from a stall higher than 16 (65 runners). None of the 43 runners drawn 19 or higher has even managed a place! 25 of the 28 winners (89%) were drawn 1- 12 despite only providing 70% of all the runners.

When the going is officially riding Good high numbers still struggle but the very low stalls don't fare too well either. 452 runners have contested 28 races on Good ground. Stalls 1-3 have won just one of the 28 races from 79 runners but have been placed 14 times. Stalls 4 – 10 have won 16 of the 28 races (57%) from 40% of the total runners. All 21 runners drawn 24 or higher finished unplaced. In fields of 20 or more runners all 6 winners were drawn 12-23. All 30 horses drawn 1-5 were unplaced as were all 18 horses drawn 24 and higher.

When racing on Good to Firm or Firm ground there have been 564 horses contest 36 races. A third of all winners (12) came from stalls 1-4. There has been 1 winner and 4 places from the 24 runners to have been drawn 24 or higher.
