    Changes in the built environment and in vernacular architecture through globalisation: The case of Battalgazi in Turkey Mücahit Yıldırım Mahir Korkmaz Dicle University Architecture Faculty Diyarbakir Turkey Email:[email protected] Abstract Housing and its architectural characteristics undergo physical changes with changes in culture, social demographics, behaviour and environmental structures. Contemporary life-styles and behaviours influence these physical changes to housing and the environment. Cultural identity that has been developed over a long period of time can be rapidly lost. Cultural changes include migration; migration from rural areas to urban areas causes variations in traditions and architectural spaces. Thus, elements of the cultural environment, such as religion, belief systems, ecology, economics, family structures, and cultural interaction, affect the evolution of a culture. Vernacular architecture is a physical representation of culture. Malatya-Battalgazi, which is among the oldest inhabited areas in Turkey, is losing its cultural identity due to globalisation. The civil architecture in the town has suffered, but the religious architecture has been preserved with religious beliefs. The history of Battalgazi, which was known as old Malatya until 1988, dates to ancient times. The first inhabited area of Malatya was on the artificial hill called Aslantepe, on the boundary of the village Bahcebasi. Strabon, the ancient geographer, called Malatya “Melitene”. However, the modern town does not reveal this identity. A lack of preservation consciousness, cultural changes and the search for a comfortable contemporary lifestyle comfort has caused deterioration in the built environment. A B S T R A C T Article Information Received 2 March 2015 Alburnus sellal inhabits Ceyhan, Euphrates, Orontes and Tigris river basins whereas Alburnus Revised 4 July 2015 adanensis is geographically restricted to Ceyhan and Seyhan river basins. The morphological and microscopical characteristics of this fungus are described and illustrated based on the collected materials. Key words—Malatya, Pucciniales, taxonomy, Turkey Introduction The genus Cyclotrichium (Boiss.) Maden. & Scheng. (Lamiaceae, tribe Mentheae) contains nine species distributed in Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq, and Iran. Six Cyclotrichium species have been reported in Turkey, including two endemic species: C. glabrescens (Boiss. ex Rech.f.) Leblebici and C. niveum (Dirmenci et al. 2010, Dirmenci 2012). To our knowledge no rust fungi have previously been described on Cyclotrichium or cited for earlier synonyms of the species. Puccinia menthae is an autoecious, macrocyclic, long-cycle rust recorded on 28 genera of Lamiaceae (Farr & Rossman 2015). In Turkey, Puccinia menthae has been reported on Calamintha, Clinopodium, Mentha, Micromeria, Origanum, and Satureja (Bahçecioğlu & Kabaktepe 2012). Here we present a record of Puccinia menthae on a new host genus, Cyclotrichium, from Malatya province, Turkey. Materials & methods The material on which this study is based was collected from Malatya in 2015. The host specimen was prepared according to established herbarium techniques.

Çalışmada darbe yöntemi ve tuzak yöntemi kullanılmıştır. Zararlı, en yüksek popülasyonu 2008 yılında, Darende lokasyonunda oluşturmuştur. Bu popülasyon yoğunluğunu Kale ve Battalgazi lokasyon- ları izlemiştir. Meyvenin tam olgunluğa ulaştığı dönemde zararlı popülasyonu da en üst seviyede bulunmuştur. Tuzak yöntemi ile elde edilen birey sayısının, darbe yöntemi ile elde edilen birey sayısına göre daha yüksek olduğu belirlenmiştir. Knock down and trap method was used in this study. F. auricularia was created the highest population in Darende in 2008 year. This population density was followed by Kale and Darende locations. The pest population had reached at the highest level in full fruit maturity period.

The oldest transportation route in the East, is the road that connects to Erzurum via Malatya-Sivas and then to the Caucasus. Located on the oldest routes in terms of location, the pre-historic Malatya dates back to the Paleolithic Age, and after the Zafer Mound excavations, it has been seen that Malatya and the surrounding region dates back to 7000s BC. Being one of Anatolia's oldest settlements, Malatya hosted the Hittites, the Meds, the Persians, the Romans, the Byzantines, Islamic civilizations, Seljuks, and the Ottoman Empire, and now continues facilitating the same for the Republic of Turkey. Indeed, every civilization has left its mark on this settlement (TC Malatya Governorship Provincial Culture and Tourism Directorate, 2014). The Ottoman Empire, taking serving to its peoples on every land it conquered as a duty, attached great importance to zoning activities. After the Ottoman Empire annexed Malatya to its territories, it continued to undertake zoning activities here.
