    Information Sheet Water quality Defining reference condition for South Australian streams − Fleurieu Peninsula and Mount Lofty Ranges Issued August 2016 EPA1092/16: This information sheet describes the methods and outcomes of a study to monitor and assess streams of the Fleurieu Peninsula and southern Mount Lofty Ranges that may be in the best ecological condition as reference sites. Introduction The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) coordinates a monitoring, evaluation and reporting (MER) program on the aquatic ecosystem condition of South Australian inland waters. This MER program is designed to meet several objectives: • Provide a statewide monitoring framework for creeks and rivers that revolves through the NRM regions with sufficient frequency to allow for State of the Environment Reporting purposes. • Describe aquatic ecosystem condition for broad general public understanding. • Identify the key pressures and management responses to those pressures. • Provide a useful reporting format that can support environmental decision making within government, community and industry. The inland MER program aims to assess and rate the ecological condition of creeks and rivers across the state using a six-tiered condition rating system, ranging from ‘Excellent’ to ‘Very poor’1. Since the MER program began in 2008, no site has been rated as Excellent. Consequently, a project was conducted by the EPA to determine if an Excellent rated site could be found by specifically targeting stream sites that met certain topographical requirements, which indicated they may be as near to unimpacted by human disturbance as possible. The Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges (AMLR) NRM region was chosen as the most suitable study area to focus on due to the high rainfall and high percentage of natural remnant vegetation in the region, particularly in parts of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

    The Southern Kaurna Place Names Project Place Name SUMMARY (PNS) 7.1/06 ‘KONGGARATINGGA’ (Blowhole Creek) (last edited: 6/6/2013) See also PNS 5.2.2/03 Kunggaratingga (Second Valley). Abstract ‘Konggaratingga’ is RM Berndt’s spelling of the Kaurna name which (according to him) Ngarrindjeri man Albert Karlowan applied around 1940 to a cave on the southern Fleurieu coast at Blowhole Creek. In Karlowan’s version of the story the ancestral hero Tjirbuki, after his long underground journey, emerged here already transformed into a bird. The name is one possible phonetic spelling of ‘Congeratinga’, recorded by the first surveyors in 1840 as the name of a river northeast of Second Valley (see PNS 5.2.2/03). However, at Blowhole Creek ‘Konggaratingga’ is almost certainly an error: either a confusion by Karlowan or a misunderstanding by Berndt. ‘Kongarati Cave’ in the cliffs near today’s Wirrina Resort was named (probably by Tindale) after the nearby River Congeratinga, and it is very likely that this name was mistakenly transferred to the other cave at Blowhole Beach. There is no evidence of any name resembling ‘Konggaratingga’ in this area at early settlement time, though the Ngarrindjeri name ‘Rarkang’ (?Ngragangk) was recorded for Blowhole Creek by the mid-19th century. It is conceivable but very unlikely that in post-contact Ngarrindjeri memory the cave at Blowhole Beach may have been a second place with the same name. In examining Tindale’s primary records, it seems more likely that Karlowan’s first use of this name, even at Wirrina, came not from his own knowledge but from discussions with Tindale over a printed map on which ‘River Congeratinga’ was already marked.1 Blowhole Beach is also one of the locations recorded from Ngarrindjeri informants as the site where Ngurunduri called up the sea to drown his wives as they were fleeing to Kangaroo Island.

Kanmantoo Group sediments unconformably overlie Neoproterozoic and older Cambrian rocks. We consider that the geometry of the southern part of this trough was influenced by strike-slip movement along an intra-continental tear fault. To the north, the basin changes to a style dominated by orthogonal extension and eventually tapers and dies out normal to the tear fault. Balanced sections show that the kinematic style and strain distribution developed during early Palaeozoic inversion was controlled by the specific architecture of the Kanmantoo Trough. Early Palaeozoic tear faulting could have linked contrasting subduction polarities along the then contiguous palaeo-Pacific margin of Gondwana. The Kanmantoo Trough is considered to have formed at a passive margin related to east-directed subduction in what is now the Australian continent.
