    Beginners guides to the religions and beliefs Islam Teachers need subject knowledge to teach RE well. There is no substitute for this, and it is part of our professional responsibility. Any RE subject leader might use this set of support materials to help class teachers who are not expert in a religion they are going to teach. The guides to each religion here are very brief – just four or five pages usually, and carefully focused on what a teacher need to be reminded about. They are in danger of being trite or superficial, but perhaps are better than nothing. There is on every religion a wide introductory literature, and all teachers of RE will do their work better if they improve their knowledge by wider reading than is offered here. But perhaps it is worth giving these starting points to busy teachers. Note that no primary teacher needs to know about 6 religions – if you teach one year group, then two or three religions will be part of the syllabus for that year. In general terms, the following guidance points apply to teaching about any religion: 1. Respect. Speak with respect about the faith: any religion with tens of millions of followers is being studied because the people within the faith deserve our respect. 2. Diversity. Talk about ‘some / many /most’ believers, but not about ‘All believers’. Diversity is part of every religion. 3. Neutrality. Leave ‘insider language’ to insiders. A Sikh visitor can say ‘We believe...’ but teachers will do best to say ‘Many Sikhs believe’ or ‘many Christians believe...’ 4.

    SHAH WALIY ALLAH ATTEMPTS TO REVISE WAHDAT AL- WUJUD BY ABDUL HAQ ANSARI HE theosophical system of re?ahdat al-zvujud', or ontological/ Texistential monism, which Ibn al-'Arabi (d. 638/1240) for- mulated, became very soon popular among the sufis. Some of them, however, did not agree with it, others disliked, and some even denounced it. Nevertheless, the doctrine continued to dominate sufi speculation for four hundred years till Shaykh Ahmad Sirhindi (d. 1034/1624) subjected its basic concepts as well as its moral and religious consequences to searching criticism, and came out with a parallel theosophy 2, popularly known as wahdat al-shuhud. Sirhindi said that mystical experience has three levels: One is the level of pure union which in modern terminology is called unitive experience; next is the experience of separation after union (farq bald al-j*amc) in which the mystic is one with God in one sense, and different from him in another; the final stage of the experience is that when the feeling of oneness or union completely disappears and God is perceived as transcending the world absolutely. Sirhindi said that some sufis like Al-Hallaj 3 (d. 309/922), remained at the first stage till the end of their life; others moved to the second stage, but stayed on there; only a few rose up to the third stage. Qur’anic Revisionism and the Case of Scott Kugle Mobeen Vaid Abstract Reformist authors in the West, most notably Scott Kugle, have called Islam’s prohibition of liwāṭ (sodomy) and other same-sex be - havior into question. Kugle’s “Sexuality, Diversity, and Ethics in the Agenda of Progressive Muslims” ( Progressive Muslims : 2003) and Homosexuality in Islam (2010) serve as the scholarly center for those who advocate sanctioning same-sex acts. Kugle traces the heritage of the Lot narrative’s exegesis to al-Tabari (d. 310/923), which, he contends, later exegetes came to regard as theologically axiomatic and thus beyond question. This study argues that Kugle’s critical methodological inconsistencies, misreading and misrepre - sentation of al-Tabari’s and other traditional works, as well as the anachronistic transposition of modern categories onto the classical sources, completely undermine his argument. Tulisan ini mengkaji pandangan Abû Ishâq al-Shâthibî (w. 790/1388) tentang bidah versus al-mashlahah al-mursalah dan al-istihsân. Karya al-Syâthibî tentang konsep bidah dalam kitabnya, al-I'tishâm, sebagai respons terhadap ulama di zamannya yang menganggap bahwa al-mashlahah al-mursalah dan al-istihsân sebagai bentuk inovasi (al-bid‘ah). Tulisan ini akan mengelaborasi signifikansi gagasan al-Syâthibî dalam isu bidah yang memformulasikan kerangka syariah berbasis teks dan rasio dengan non-syariah. Pembahasan tentang bidah sebagai perbuatan yang bertentangan dengan prinsip syariah akan dianalisis dengan prinsip legalitas al-mashlahah al-mursalah dan al-istihsân sebagai bagian dari metodologi penggalian hukum setelah Alquran, Sunah, ijmak, dan qiyâs. Tulisan ini juga ingin menguraikan keunggulan al-Syâthibî dalam epistemologi hukum dibanding ulama lain yang membahas isu serupa.
