    Barroso accepts nomination of new Cypriot EU Commissioner by Nicos Bellos Brussels, Feb 29 (CNA) - President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso accepted Friday the proposal of the Cypriot government to nominate Androulla Vassiliou as the Cypriot member in the European Commission. Vassiliou will take over the “Health” portofolio succeeding former Cypriot EU Commissioner Markos Kyprianou who resigned to assume new duties as Foreign Minister in the new Cabinet of Sunday’s elected President Demetris Christofias. A press release by the European Commission says that Barroso “has today (Friday) written to the President of the Council and to the President of the European Parliament, transmitting the resignation of Markos Kyprianou as a member of the European Commission, and President Barroso's agreement with the nomination by the Republic of Cyprus of Mrs Androula Vassiliou as a member of the Commission. Mrs. Vassiliou will take over the Health portfolio”. In the letter to the President of the Council, President Barroso has asked the Council to put in place as soon as possible the procedure foreseen by the Treaty for Kyprianou’s replacement. In the letter to the President of the European Parliament, President Barroso informs that following the Council's appointment and in accordance with the Framework Agreement between the European Parliament and the Commission, Mrs Vassiliou will be available to appear before the Parliament, in full compliance with the prerogatives of the institutions. Vassiliou started her career as a lawyer. She was an elected Member of the House of Representatives of Cyprus for two terms (1996-2001 and 2001-2006).

First, publishing internal research papers and second, collaborating with outside researchers and academics to contribute to the debate on European issues. These documents are made available to a limited number of decision-makers, politicians, socio-economists, academics and diplomats in the various EU Member States, but are systematically put on our website.     Some history European Consumer Day At the initiative of its president, Ms Rangoni Machiavelli, the European Economic and Social Committee organised the first European Consumer Day on 15 March 1999. This initiative was extremely successful and received the immediate support of the European Commission and successive EU Presidencies. As a result, since the first three events held in Brussels, during which issues such European as food security and safe use of the Internet were debated, the European Consumer Day has often been held in the country holding the EU presidency: Madrid 2002, Thessaloniki 2003, Dublin 2004, Vienna 2006, Berlin 2007, Madrid 2010 and Budapest 2011. Consumer Day The EESC is a bridge between Europe and organised civil society. He was re- elected for another five-year term by the European Parliament in September 2009. Mr. Barroso served as head of the International Relations Department of Lusíada University in Portugal from 1995 to 1999 and was a visiting professor at Georgetown University in the United States from 1996 to 1998. Mr. Barroso was first elected to the Portuguese Parliament in 1985. He served as State Secretary for Home Affairs, State Secretary for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, and Minister for Foreign Affairs in successive governments. In 1999, he was elected President of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and became the Leader of the Opposition. Mr. Barroso served as Prime Minister of Portugal from 2002 to 2004. DIMITRIOS AVRAMOPOULOS Minister of Defence Greece Dimitrios Avramopoulos, born in Athens in 1953, was elected member of the Greek Parliament in 1993, after 13 years in the Greek Diplomatic Service. In 1995 and until 2002, he was mayor of Athens. During that period he founded the “Athens’ International Prize for Democracy”, under the auspices of UNESCO, and the “World Union of Olympic Cities”. In 2004, already reelected member of the Greek Parliament, he was appointed Minister of Tourism and in 2006 Minister of Health and Social Solidarity, an appointment that lasted until 2009.

Wednesday 18th January: International Donors Conference on Human and Avian Influenza, Beijing The news: - The European Commission is co-hosting with the World Bank and the government of the People’s Republic of China an International Pledging Conference on Avian and Human Influenza. Over 90 countries have been invited as well as 25 organisations, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO). - Building on the Geneva conference of November 2005 which identified what support and resources were needed, this meeting aims to set up a financing framework for donors to assist the worst affected countries in need to respond to the socioeconomic, animal and human health challenges posed by avian influenza. - Commissioner Markos Kyprianou will represent the European Commission. The European Commission has already set aside € 30 million to help the countries of South East Asia tackle avian influenza in the framework of this conference. Commissioner Kyprianou will announce the final donation of the European Union, which will be in addition to the assistance to be provided by EU Member States. The Treaty entered into force in 1952 for a period of fifty years and expired on 23 July 2002. The Nice European Council decided to annex to the Treaty of Nice a Protocol on the financial consequences of the expiry of the ECSC Treaty and on the creation and management of the Coal and Steel Research Fund. This Protocol confers the ownership of ECSC funds on the European Community with effect from 24 July 2002. Commission With the entry into force of the Treaty of Nice on 1 February 2003, the Commission's powers and responsibilities are governed by Council Decision 2003/76/EC of 1 February 2003.
