We summarize the physics that can be done with neutrino factories as well as with intense cold beams of muons. The physics potential of muon colliders is reviewed, both as Higgs factories and compact high- energy lepton colliders. The status and time scale of our research and development effort is reviewed as well as the latest designs in cooling channels including the promise of ring coolers in achieving longitudinal and transverse cooling simultaneously. We detail the efforts being made to mount an international cooling experiment to demonstrate the ionization cooling of muons.     ) ) ) SLAC-216 UC-34d (TIE) THE PRODUCTION OF NEUTRINOS AND NEUTRINO-LIKE PARTICLES IN PROTON-NUCLEUS INTERACTIONS THE PRODUCTION OF NEUTRINOS AND NEUTRINO-LIKE John Patrick Dishaw Stanford University, June 1979 PARTICLES IN PROTON-NUCLEUS INTERACTIONS * An experimental search was performed to look for the direct John Patrick Dishaw Stanford Linear Accelerator Center production of neutrinos or neutrino-like particles, i.e., neutral Stanford University Stanford, California 94305 particles which interact weakly with hadrons, in proton-nucleus interactions at 400 GeV incident proton energy. Possible sources of such particles include the semi-leptonic decay of new heavy particles such as charm, and the direct production of a light neutral Higgs particle such as the axion. The production of these particles has been inferred in this March 1979 experiment by energy nonconservation in the collision of a proton with an iron nucleus. The total visible energy of the interaction was measured using a sampling ionization calorimeter. The calori­ meter was calibrated with muons. This calibration was adjusted slightly by requiring consistency in the calorimeter shower profile for primary interactions beginning at various depths in the calori- Prepared in part for the Department of Energy meter. Fluctuations in the electromagnetic and hadronic components under contract number DE-AC03-76SF00515 were reduced using a weighted measurement algorithm.
