Zeal Monachorum, a mid Devon village mentioned in the Domesday Book with a population of around 350, has a church, village hall and The Waie Inn public house. North Tawton lies approximately 3 miles to the west and provides a primary school, stores, doctor’s surgery, post office and two pubs. The late Poet Laureate Ted Hughes, moved to North Tawton in the 1960s and subsequently wrote Moortown, a poetry diary of his everyday life on a Devon farm. The market town of Crediton is about 10 miles from the farm, with a wide range of shops and supermarkets, banks and recreational facilities including a weekly farmers market, a leisure centre and indoor swimming pool. In addition there is an excellent school, Queen Elizabeth Academy, which has its own sixth form. The cathedral city of Exeter is located about 17 miles to the south east from where there are mainline rail services to London Paddington, access to the M5 and Exeter International Airport. The Dartmoor National Park lies 8 miles to the south, providing 368 square miles of stunning scenery with paths and trails for walking and riding. Barnstaple, north Devon’s regional centre, lies 25 miles to the north, near to which is the rugged north Devon coastline with its beautiful sandy beaches. Introduction Lower Newton is offered to the market for the first time in 56 years, with the farm’s bungalow having been constructed for the current owners in 1968. It lies in the heart of rolling mid Devon countryside but is accessible, approximately two miles from the B3220, which links the market town of Crediton and the large village of Winkleigh. The range of modern farm buildings lie on the opposite side of the lane to the bungalow and are presently used for livestock and machinery storage. The farm extends to approximately 179.58 acres (72.68 hectares) and comprises some productive arable and pasture fields, in addition to an area of woodland on the eastern boundary. It is early Celtic interlaced work such as is not found elsewhere in England except in Northumbria. The cross gives a name to a once noted Devon family which comes in the local rhyme: Crocker, Cruwys, and Coplestone, When the Conqueror came were found at home. Eleventh Century 1018 Buckfast Abbey is founded under the patronage of King Canute. 1040 The Manor of Down(e) named after the Saxon settlement DUN meaning Hill, first recorded as being the gift of King Harthacnut. Some of the glebe land in the manor originally formed part of the Devon estates of Harthacnut’s father, Canute, king of England 1016-35.) Tenure is granted to Aelfwein, Abbot of Buckfast in support of the ministry of the Abbey Church. Down St Mary is one of six Devon churches held by the Abbot of Buckfast prior to the Norman conquest, the others being Churchstow, Petrockstow, South Brent, Trusham and Zeal Monachorum.
