Dr. Alexei Nallmov Moscow Slate University Russia Russia and the Seas: Economic-Geographic Essay with Special Reference to Eastern Seas Discovery, Perception, and Use As far as I am informed, the ongm of geographical names of different seas washing Russian shores already has been surveyed during one of the previous seminars. To my opinion, the toponimic (or pelagonomic) survey of this kind can be completed and amplified with the review of political reasons and economic-geographic circumstances of Russian expansion to Ihe seas during different periods of its history. Also the contemporary evaluation of economic potential of Russian sea-shore regions likewise the country strategy respect nearby seas and the World Ocean in general must be taken in mind for purposes of the present seminar devoted to Ihe East Sea! Sea of Japan. As Russian history shows, geographical discoveries and, in certain degree, origins of geographical names are strongly tied with development of the "inner" geography of Ihe country itself. Re-orientation of Russia in the surrounding space and evolution of geopolitical ideas were often determined by changes in regional proportions inside its territory. Stein2 Abstract Having ‘served his apprenticeship’ as Second Master on board HMS Assistance during Captain Horatio Austin’s expedition in search of the missing Franklin expedition in 1850–51, whereby he had made two quite impressive sledge trips, in the spring of 1852 Frederick John Krabbé was selected by Captain Leopold McClintock to serve under him as Master (navigation officer) on board the steam tender HMS Intrepid, part of Captain Sir Edward Belcher’s squadron, again searching for the Franklin expedition. After two winterings, the second off Cape Cockburn, southwest Bathurst Island, Krabbé was chosen by Captain Henry Kellett to lead a sledging party west to Mercy Bay, Banks Island, to check on the condition of HMS Investigator, abandoned by Commander Robert M’Clure, his officers and men, in the previous spring. Krabbé executed these orders and was thus the last person to see Investigator afloat. Since, following Belcher’s orders, Kellett had abandoned HMS Resolute and Intrepid, rather than their return journey ending near Cape Cockburn, Krabbé and his men had to continue for a further 140 nautical miles (260 km) to Beechey Island. This made the total length of their sledge trip 863½ nautical miles (1589 km), one of the longest man- hauled sledge trips in the history of the Arctic. Introduction On 22 July 2010 a party from the underwater archaeology division of Parks Canada flew into Mercy Bay in Aulavik National Park, on Banks Island, Northwest Territories – its mission to try to locate HMS Investigator, abandoned here by Commander Robert McClure in 1853.3 Two days later underwater archaeologists Ryan Harris and Jonathan Moore took to the water in a Zodiac to search the bay, towing a side-scan sonar towfish. -

Viewpoint Mystic mountain © Mendip Hills AONB Time: 15 mins Region: South West England Landscape: rural Location: Ebbor Gorge, Somerset, BA5 3BA Grid reference: ST 52649 48742 Getting there: Park at Deer Leap car park and picnic area (on the road between Wookey Hole and Priddy) Keep an eye out for: Buzzards and other birds of prey soaring on the thermals below From this stunning vantage point we have sweeping views south across the flat land of the Somerset Levels. On a clear day, looking east you can see the dark line of hills marking out Exmoor National Park and if you look in a west south-west direction you can even spot the Bristol Channel glistening in the distance. As our eyes pan across the view they rest on a perfectly rounded knoll with a short tower on top. This is Glastonbury Tor. Claimed as the site of the legendary Vale of Avalon and the final resting place of King Arthur, the tor rises up above the flat land surrounding it and is visible for miles around. Why does the mystical Glastonbury Tor rise up out of the surrounding lowlands? First of all look straight ahead and in the middle distance you’ll see three hills which punctuate the flat landscape. From left to right they are Hay Hill, Ben Knowle Hill and Yarley Hill, part of a low ridge just south of the River Axe. Surrounding these hills the Somerset Levels are an area of low-lying farmland. The lowest point is just 0.2 metres above sea level. -

Vision Touch and Hearing Research Methods and Results: An optical explanation of the Min Min light phenomenon is of- Centre, University of Queensland fered, based on a number of direct observations of the phenomenon, as well as a field demonstration, in the Channel Country of Western Queensland. This explanation is based on the inverted mirage or Fata Morgana, where light is refracted long distances over the horizon by the refractive index gradient that occurs in the layers of air during a temperature inversion. Both natural and man-made light sources can be involved, with the isolated light source making it difficult to recognise the features of the Fata Morgana that are obvious in daylight and with its unsuspected great distance contribut- ing to the mystery of its origins.
