  • Laurence Olivier in Hamlet (1949)
1 Laurence Olivier in Hamlet (1949) In the late 1930s and early 1940s, when Samuel Goldwyn, MGM, and David Selznick were wooing him, Laurence Olivier chose not to become a movie star “like dear Cary.” After playing Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights (1939), Darcy in Pride and Prejudice (1940), and Maxim Dewinter in Rebecca (1940), he appeared in Hollywood pictures sparingly and tried to avoid a fixed persona. He nevertheless became the symbol of what midcentury America thought of as a distinguished actor, and was the most successful English theatrical type in the movies. He wasn’t romantically flamboyant (Orson Welles was closer to that), he wasn’t a naturalist like the students of the Method, he wasn’t a Brechtian, and he wasn’t the sort of movie actor who plays variations on a single character. He belonged instead to a school of disciplined, tastefully romantic verisimilitude, and within that school was a master. He was also the best-known Shakespearian in films. Olivier often said that his favorite movie role was the working-class comedian Archie Rice in The Entertainer (1960), but his performances in the Shakespeare films that he directed are more representative of his skills and more significant in film history. Based on canonical texts with a long performance history, they foreground his stylistic choices 2 and make his influences relatively easy to identify. His version of Hamlet (1949), for example, seems to derive pretty equally from the English romantics, Sigmund Freud, and William Wyler. These sources are not so eclectic as they might appear. Romantic-realist ideas of narrative shaped nearly all feature films of the period; Wyler had been the director of Wuthering Heights and at one point was scheduled to direct Olivier’s production of Henry V; and Olivier’s conceptions of character and performance are similar to the ones that shaped Hollywood in the 1940s, when Freud was in vogue.

Even the ending was daring. The crucified hero is denied a conventional victory, and has to be consoled with the hope that his ideas will survive. Seen three decades later in a lovingly restored version, "Spartacus" still plays like an extraordinary epic, and its intellectual strength is still there. But other elements of the film have dated.

  • 101 Films for Filmmakers
101 (OR SO) FILMS FOR FILMMAKERS The purpose of this list is not to create an exhaustive list of every important film ever made or filmmaker who ever lived. That task would be impossible. The purpose is to create a succinct list of films and filmmakers that have had a major impact on filmmaking. A second purpose is to help contextualize films and filmmakers within the various film movements with which they are associated. The list is organized chronologically, with important film movements (e.g. Italian Neorealism, The French New Wave) inserted at the appropriate time. AFI (American Film Institute) Top 100 films are in blue (green if they were on the original 1998 list but were removed for the 10th anniversary list). Guidelines: 1. The majority of filmmakers will be represented by a single film (or two), often their first or first significant one. This does not mean that they made no other worthy films; rather the films listed tend to be monumental films that helped define a genre or period. For example, Arthur Penn made numerous notable films, but his 1967 Bonnie and Clyde ushered in the New Hollywood and changed filmmaking for the next two decades (or more). 2. Some filmmakers do have multiple films listed, but this tends to be reserved for filmmakers who are truly masters of the craft (e.g. Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick) or filmmakers whose careers have had a long span (e.g. Luis Buñuel, 1928-1977). A few filmmakers who re-invented themselves later in their careers (e.g. David Cronenberg–his early body horror and later psychological dramas) will have multiple films listed, representing each period of their careers.

  • Documenting the Director: Delbert Mann, His Life, His Work, and His Papers
http://spider.georgetowncollege.edu/htallant/border/bs10/fr-harw.htm Border States: Journal of the Kentucky-Tennessee American Studies Association, No. 10 (1995) DOCUMENTING THE DIRECTOR: DELBERT MANN, HIS LIFE, HIS WORK, AND HIS PAPERS Sarah Harwell Vanderbilt University Library The Papers of Delbert Mann at the Special Collections Library of Vanderbilt University provide not only a rich chronicle of the award-winning television and motion picture director's life and work, but also document the history of aspects of American popular culture and motion picture art in the latter half of the twentieth century. Delbert Mann was born in Lawrence, Kansas, in 1920. He moved to Nashville, which he considers his home town, as a young boy when his father came to teach at Scarritt College. He graduated from Hume-Fogg High School and Vanderbilt University, where Dinah Shore and Mann's future wife, Ann Caroline Gillespie, were among his classmates. Also in Nashville he developed a lifelong friendship with Fred Coe through their mutual involvement in the Nashville Community Playhouse. Coe would play a very important role in Mann's life. A few months after his graduation from Vanderbilt in 1941, Mann joined the Eighth Air Force, for which he completed thirty-five missions as a pilot of a B-24 bomber. After the end of the Second World War he attended the Yale Drama School, followed by two years as director of the Town Theatre of Columbia, South Carolina. In 1949, Fred Coe, already a producer at NBC television network, invited Delbert Mann to come to New York to direct live television drama on the "Philco Television Playhouse." Then in its infancy, television offered many fine original plays to its relatively small viewing audience.

Tom Marshall’s Weekly News, September 12, 2016 Actors and Actresses Depicting Famous People: The Weekly News of December 11, 2006, was entitled “Let’s Go to the Movies.” When I was young during the Golden Age of Hollywood, I loved the movies, culminating in the Club House Theater in Yorklyn, which I operated for two seasons in 1947 and 1948. From the 1930s through the ‘50s, leading stars of the screen were under contract with the big studios and often took roles not to their liking. Among the features during this period was the portrayal of American heroes in full-length films, which carried over to historical documentaries on TV. The earlier movies took liberties with actual facts, but they were popular. Big name stars were often asked to portray historical figures. Sometimes they were honored to do it; often they “had to.” Following is the list of those I can recall. Spencer Tracy: Clarence Darrow, Father Flanagan, Christopher Jones, Jimmy Doolittle, Thomas Edison, Robert Rogers. Edward Arnold: Pawnee Bill, Daniel Webster Walter Hampden: Thomas Jefferson Hal Holbrook: John Adams, Mark Twain, Abraham Lincoln Henry Fonda: Abraham Lincoln James Stewart: Glenn Miller, Charles A. • Call for Papers Actors Behind the Camera FILM JOURNAL
Call for papers Actors behind the camera FILM JOURNAL Call for papers for Film Journal Actors behind the camera Guest editors Nicole Cloarec (Université Rennes 1, France) and Delphine Letort (Université du Maine-Le Mans, France) “Actors are cattle” was Hitchcock’s provocative judgement in the famous series of talks that the filmmaker gave to François Truffaut (Jeffries). Truly enough, during the heyday of Classical Hollywood, actors were under contract, like any other cog in the wheel of production of the studio system. The prevailing star system put an end to the “multitasking” norm of the beginning of the movie industry and, in this context, the instances of actors who turned directors (Charles Laughton, Robert Montgomery, Ida Lupino) were all the more remarkable. However, the break-up of the studio system and the advent of independent cinema brought about a new order where a new generation of actors (Dennis Hopper, Paul Newman or Robert Redford among others) had more opportunities to try their luck behind the camera. Since the 1970s, the list of actors-turned-directors has increased dramatically and seems to have become a significant trend in recent years. The list keeps growing exponentially, moving from old-timers like Warren Beatty, Robert de Niro, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Angelica Huston or Tommy Lee Jones, to include actors who are also known for their political commitment like Tim Robbins, George Clooney, Jodie Foster, and film stars like Tom Hanks, Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson, Kevin Costner, Sean Penn, Michael Keaton, Ed Harris, Kevin Spacey, Ben Affleck, Andy Garcia, Edward Norton, Ethan Hawke, Natalie Portman, Angelica Jolie, James Franco, Joseph Gordon-Lewitt.

We will examine films that are, in the words of scholar Michael Genovese, both politically “explicit” and “implicit.” It is hoped that the course will further stimulate the student to consider the connections between popular culture and political behavior in these media saturated times. Course Requirements: The class will be conducted in both a lecture and a discussion format. Students will be expected to participate fully in class discussions. Throughout the course students are required to attend each class and keep abreast of their reading assignments. During the term two exams and two “reaction” essays will be required.
