Welcome to the Spring Cinema Series… a unique opportunity to learn about cinema in an interdisciplinary, cinematheque-style environment open to the general public! Throughout the term we will invite a variety of special guests to enrich your understanding of the films in the series. The films will be preceded by formal introductions and followed by public discussions. You are welcome and encouraged to bring guests throughout the term! This is not a traditional class, therefore it is important for you to review the course assignments and due dates carefully to ensure that you fulfill all the requirements to earn the grade you desire. We want the Cinema Series to be both entertaining and enlightening for students and community alike. Welcome to our college film club! COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will introduce students to one of the most powerful cultural and social communications media of our time: cinema. The successful student will become more aware of the complexity of film art, more sensitive to its nuances, textures, and rhythms, and more perceptive in “reading” its multilayered blend of image, sound, and motion. The films, texts, and classroom materials will cover a broad range of domestic, independent, and international cinema, making students aware of the culture, politics, and social history of the periods in which the films were produced. -

A Neal Street Production for BBC One Starring Jessica Raine with Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Miranda Hart and Judy Parfitt Based on the best-selling memoirs by Jennifer Worth and dramatised by Heidi Thomas Call the Midwife is a moving and intimate insight into the colourful world of midwifery and family life in 1950’s East London. We are introduced to the community through the eyes of young nurse Jenny Lee as she arrives at Nonnatus House to live and work as a midwife alongside an Order of Nuns. As Jenny comes to terms with her new life, we meet some phenomenal people who prove that their warmth, resilience and determination are to be admired beyond measure. At the heart of this world are the Sisters of St Raymond Nonnatus who have been active in the East End as Anglican nursing nuns since the beginning of the 20th century. The Sisters and the midwives of Nonnatus House carry out many nursing duties across the community. However, with between 80 and 100 babies being born each month in Poplar alone, their primary work is to help bring safe childbirth to women in the area and to look after their countless newborns. The series was commissioned by Danny Cohen, Controller BBC One, and Ben Stephenson, Controller BBC Drama. It was adapted with the blessing and guidance of Jennifer Worth, who worked closely with Neal Street Productions and screenwriter Heidi Thomas (Upstairs Downstairs, Cranford) up until she passed away shortly before filming began in the summer of 2011. Starring newcomer Jessica Raine as Jenny, the cast includes Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Miranda Hart and Judy Parfitt. -

New York, NY – September 12, 2018 – In March 2019, Park Avenue Armory – in collaboration with the National Theatre and Neal Street Productions – will present the North American premiere of The Lehman Trilogy. Told in three parts in a single evening, the production will unfold in the 1 soaring 55,000-square-foot Wade Thompson Drill Hall from March 22 through April 20, 2019 in a strictly limited engagement. Directed by Sam Mendes, The Lehman Trilogy weaves through nearly two centuries of Lehman lineage, following the brothers Henry, Emanuel, and Mayer Lehman from their 1844 arrival in New York City to the 2008 collapse of the financial firm bearing their name. Adam Godley, Ben Miles, and Simon Russell Beale play the Lehman brothers, and a cast of characters including their sons and grandsons. As the inaugural production of the 2019 season, The Lehman Trilogy builds on the Armory’s history of presenting bold and engaging theater productions that explore the unexpected possibilities of the cross-genre cultural institution. The world premiere of Stefano Massini’s The Lehman Trilogy opened at the Piccolo Teatro in Milan in 2015. -

Son premier film, American Beauty, pamphlet acide mais placide sur la conformité sociale, avait frappé dans le mille et obtint nombre de récompenses. Depuis, il décortique l'âme de son pays sous différents angles et en différents lieux. OLIVIER BOUFÎQUE douce-amère, qui peut toutefois agacer. Car ceux qui entourent ces deux trentenaires — sortis tout droit de l'Amérique granola de Barack Obama — sont souvent trop schématiques, trop liés à leur territoire. -

As in previous years, members will vote for both the nominations and the winner in the Best Film category and the four performance categories. (See below: Voting Procedures – Summary Table) Voters are asked to rank their votes in order of preference in Round One – ranked results will be used to resolve any ties. The Fellowship and Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema awards are both in the gift of the Academy and are decided each year by BAFTA’s Film Committee and approved by the Board of Trustees. -

Lorraine Heggessey Media Executive Media Masters – July 9 , 2020 Listen to the podcast online, visit www.mediamasters.fm Welcome to Media Masters, a series of one-to-one interviews with people at the top of the media game. Today I'm joined down the line by Lorraine Heggessey. Educated at Durham University and initially starting in newspaper journalism, she began her TV career joining the BBC in 1979 as a news trainee. After five years, she left for a stint in the commercial sector, working on ITV's This Week and various programs for Channel 4. She returned to the BBC in 1993, working in the science department, editing QED and executive producing Animal Hospital and The Human Body. In 1997, she became head of children's BBC, memorably firing Blue Peter presenter, Richard Bacon, for taking cocaine. In 2000 Lorraine was appointed the first female controller of BBC One, commissioning Strictly Come Dancing and bringing back Dr. Who. In 2005 she left the Beeb and was appointed Chief Executive of Talkback Thames, responsible for over 800 hours of tele a year, including The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent. In 2017 she left the broadcast world and became Chief Executive of The Royal Foundation, the charity for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. She moved on two years later when the Sussex's set up their own charitable initiative. Today she works as a media consultant, public speaker, advisor to Channel 4's Growth Fund, and is also chair of the Grierson Trust, which helps young people from diverse backgrounds get into documentary making. -

Lo Dissertation Committee: Robert Perkinson, Chairperson Mari Yoshihara Jonna Eagle Konrad Ng Jonathan Okamura Keywords: Mixed race, Ambiguity, Post-Racial, Color-blind, Film ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This project has been a test of my resiliency and grew from my desire to add a small contribution to the ongoing discussion of mixed race representations in film and television. Many people have come into my life in the last several years and encouraged my studies, talked excitedly with me, and subtly (or blatantly) pushed me to continue when I thought the road ahead looked too ominous. In 2005, at San Francisco State University’s Asian American Studies banquet, my Master’s thesis chair, Wei Ming Dariotis, remarked that a PhD was in the stars for me. Those words stayed close to me during my graduate work at the University of Hawai'i. My first teaching assistantship with Isabelle Peluad at San Francisco State University in Asian American Literature showed me exactly what I wanted to immerse myself in for the rest of my life. Graduate courses with Russell Jeung and Madeline Hsu reaffirmed my desire to work within the field of Asian American Studies and continue on to a doctorate program. My coursework in American Studies was rigorous and pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way. -

Photographed by Douglas Atfield The National Portrait Gallery, London, has unveiled a major new commission of portrait drawings of some of the UK’s leading film directors by London-born artist Nina Mae Fowler. The portraits have gone on public display for the first time in a new display Luminary Drawings: Portraits of Film Directors by Nina Mae Fowler (12 April – 1 October 2019). Fowler’s work often investigates fame, desire and our relationship with cinema. For the commission, she invited directors Amma Asante, Paul Greengrass, Asif Kapadia, Ken Loach, Sam Mendes, Nick Park, Sally Potter, Sir Ridley Scott and Joe Wright to choose a film of particular significance to them. During the sittings, Fowler projected the film of their choice, and recorded their reactions on camera and through loose sketches, with their faces lit only by the light of the screen in an otherwise darkened space.
