And so, I haven’t been to any. Marilyn Paquette and Mark DeMarco with a proud graduate. businessman and philanthropist Kenneth H. Hofmann. A longtime supporter of several Contra Costa educational works, including De La Salle High School, Hofmann was looking for a new project when DeMarco proposed starting a school specifically for economically and socially at-risk students. Hofmann offered to provide funding for the first five years of such a school, and the impetus for a new Lasallian ministry was born. Those first days, and then years, would indeed pass quickly, and the distant hopes and dreams that had accompanied them were now much closer, and about to become reality. It was time for the school to prepare for its first graduation. Throughout the ceremony, different school communi - ty members and supporters did their best to express what they had experienced together. Eventually, it would be the words of valedictorian Alexander Ramirez that would best capture both the spirit and the significance of what had happened within the walls of his school over the past three years. In his valedictory address, he said: ‘If you’re absent during my struggle, don’t expect to be present during my success.’ That quote is from the actor, Will Smith. Think of this quote and of how it expresses brotherhood and its importance. Class of 2017, ask yourselves this—what will you do to not be absent in the time of struggle of your brothers, so that you can rise to success as your brothers rise? We rise or fall, but when either of those happens, we do it together. Because of De La Salle Academy, the Lasallian zeal for building saving relationships was alive in 15 young men who not long before had been in danger of being dismissed and forgotten by the world. Now, they knew that they had beaten the odds, and they knew how they had done it: together. From neckties to diplomas, from uncertainty to promise. For them, this graduation was not just about reaching a milestone. It was about victory.

All my brothers in the graduating class of 2017, raise your hand and keep it up if you remember this (hold up ISO card) little card. It was given to us at the outset of our journey together, and it outlines the ISOs, formerly the ESLRs, or the Integral Student Outcomes for short. If you remember it, keep your hands up. Now, if you recall, Mr. Hassett distributed these cards when we were but wee freshmen, and told us to keep them in our wallets as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with being a Spartan. If you kept it in your wallet, keep your hand up. Be completely honest. Now you can all put your hands down. If you no longer carry the card with you, that’s okay, because I believe this small card has served its purpose. I believe that I am speaking to a group of men who no longer need a card to be reminded of their responsibilities as Spartans to their community and to themselves because we are young men who already live and breathe the lessons on this card. The first ISO, or Student Outcome, is that we are leaving here as a “Man of Faith.” What exactly is that, you may ask yourself? What does that mean? 2016-17 Lasallian Educator of the Year Honoree: Mrs. Janet Appel, Co-Director of College Counseling There was excitement in the Hofmann Student Center this past April as Dr. Heather Alumbaugh revealed the 2016-17 Lasallian Educator of the Year recipient. Only three people knew who the winner would be —even the winner would be caught unaware. Knowing that she had a rapt audience, Dr. Alumbaugh slowly revealed a few clues as to the recipient: “This recipient is kind, generous, and thoughtful, and brings out the best in students.” “This educator interacts with all students, especially the Seniors, in a way that vali - dates who the student is as an individual and helps them to reach their full potential ... This educator does this in a way that walks with and journeys with the student much as an older sister or brother rather than an authoritative figure.” You could see the wheels turning as everyone in the room tried to correctly identify the honoree before the person sitting next to them did. The clues became a bit clearer: “She has been very involved in supporting the tutoring program at DeMarillac over the years, has been actively involved in our Diversity and Social Justice programs, attended numerous campus ministry retreats, and supervised the recycling program of the school for several years. Our recipient initiated the program for first-generation students to visit colleges and initiated the Senior Advisory Program.” By now, students were eagerly turning around in their seats, trying to find Mrs. Janet Appel. Indeed, a few faculty were trying to track her down, too, but she was nowhere to be found. Ironically enough, Mrs. Appel was on her way to a college counseling con - ference in San Francisco. After finally getting in touch with her and a quick U-Turn at the Orinda BART Station, Mrs. Appel made it back with minutes to spare before her name was called. When Dr. Alumbaugh announced her name and with a humble smile on her face, Mrs. Appel walked to the stage as nearly 1,300 faculty, staff, and students gave her a much-deserved standing ovation. To say this award was unexpected would be an understatement. “I was so honored and surprised to receive this award,” said Mrs. Appel. “It means being seen as the person I would hope to be, in my best self. I am also especially and deeply humbled to receive this award when I think of those who have received it before me.”

Facilitating Life Long Learning: De La Salle’s New Learning Center

fter five years of planning and a swift ten weeks of For Mr. Sean Bristol, the Learning Needs and Spartan demolition and construction, the De La Salle Success Coordinator, this Learning Center is the culmination Learning Center opened this past August. A state-of- of many years of research and planning. “It couldn’t have Athe art facility comprised of three conference rooms, office turned out any better. You have a vision and have no idea space, a quiet room, and twenty carousel stations, the how it might turn out,” said Mr. Bristol. “The things we Learning Center is an area where students will be able to thought were most important and that we really wanted, like focus on their studies and, as the name suggests, to learn. the conference rooms, we have now. It’s incredible.” For him “The biggest thing that excites me about the Learning and Mr. Greg MacArthur, the Bishop Cummins Program Center itself is the atmosphere it creates with life-long learn - Coordinator, the impetus was really about finding space. ing,” says Mr. Jon Norfolk, the newly hired Learning Center Coordinator. “It’s really amazing to see students go through that learning process from their freshmen to senior year and learn not only academic skills but life skills, as well.” Mr. Norfolk will be in charge of managing the space—from over - seeing conference room reservations for faculty and staff to coordinating with tutors and providing a structured testing environment for the students. The Learning Center has not been open for very long, but already it has made a big impact on students. “It’s amazing what a new space—whatever it might be—does to your con - fidence. You see the new furniture, you see the offices, and you look around and everyone is working because they have the proper resources they need to focus and to do well. When students walk through the door, they know that it’s time to work. They can see that people have made a significant investment in them,” observed Mr. Norfolk.

12 UNION FALL 2017 campus news With more and more students needing special services outside of the classroom— whether it’s make-up test taking, extended test taking, or tutoring, for example—small classrooms or “one-size-fits-all” rooms just weren’t working. “Greg might have 50 students in one half of the classroom for study hall, and I would have 12 students on the other half trying to take a test—not the best environment for any of those students.” With more classrooms being built in the STREAM Innovation Center, the two of them realized that there might be an opportunity to move out of their tight quarters. And so along with the help of tutor vounteer Becky Figeroa, they put together a proposal that asked the school to convert some of those old lab rooms in the 400-wing to a dedicated learning space for students. The school agreed. “We started looking at schools throughout the Oakland Diocese and the South Bay, such as Bishop O’Dowd, Serra, and Bellarmine. More and more high schools are realizing that they need designated space for testing and after school tutor - ing,” Mr. Bristol explained. He, too, has enjoyed see - ing the students’ reactions to this new space. “I told the students that, as we built this space, we made sure to keep them in mind and make sure we considered what they might need. It’s humbling for them to walk in now and to know that it was designed and built for Jon Norfolk is the new Learning Center coordinator them to succeed.”

Athletic Performance Center Update With the completion of funding for the STREAM Innovation Center, De La Salle focuses its efforts on the next capital project – the Athletic Performance Center!

This $17 million project is the next major fundraising priority serving the long term facility needs for our comprehensive Athletics Programs. De La Salle students are asked to address physical fitness and wellness through its health curriculum, opportunities available through intramural and interscholastic athletic programs, and through interaction with athletic trainers and nutrition guidelines. Currently, more than 80% of the De La Salle student population participates in athletics or fitness based activities. The additional physical space will help alleviate the current the space constraints, greatly reducing the current conflict with study time for the students.

• Academic Advantage: Providing additional space for team practices will curtail the need for early morning practices that begin at 6:00 a.m. and many evening practices that extend until 9:00 p.m., and thus allowing more study time. • Competition Venue: The facility will be the primary com- petition venue for De La Salle Indoor Sports. • Weight and Training Center: The new 6,000 square foot weight room will allow for an increase in cardio and weight room equipment. Currently at just over 2,000 square feet, the original weight room was built to support 400 students. That number now stands at more than 700 student-athletes. • Increase Indoor Practice Space: Ample space for basketball, volleyball, and wrestling programs as well as intramural programs. • Provide Large Flex Space: Additional space for team meetings, non-athletic activities, and serve as an assembly space for more than 1,200 people. • Lobby: Featuring a signature rotunda, the new lobby and will welcome fans to De La Salle High School.
