Jean-Briac (JB) Perrette President Discovery Networks International Jean-Briac (JB) Perrette President Discovery Networks International JB Perrette is President of Discovery Networks International, a division of Discovery Communications, the #1 pay-TV programmer in the world reaching nearly 3 billion cumulative subscribers. Based in London, Perrette oversees and sets the strategy for the company’s five international operations: Latin America/U.S. Hispanic, Northern Europe, Southern Europe, Central & Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa (CEEMEA) and Asia-Pacific. Discovery’s unrivalled international footprint includes an average of 8 channels in more than 220 countries and territories. Discovery’s organic international business has grown rapidly for the past several years, led by the expansion and performance of its global flagship channels including Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet, ID: Investigation Discovery and Science channel. Discovery also has strengthened and deepened its presence in key markets and across multiple content genres by gaining majority control of Eurosport International – Europe’s leading sports entertainment group as well as through the acquisitions of SBS Nordics, Switchover Media in Italy and Fatafeat in the Middle East. In the second quarter of 2014, Discovery’s international revenue surpassed U.S. revenue for the first time in company history, marking an important milestone since the launch of its first international channel 25 years ago. Perrette joined Discovery in October 2011 as Chief Digital Officer, charged with building best-in-class digital and technology organizations to help establish the company’s industry-leading presence in the digital media field. In that role, he refocused and reinforced the company’s leadership as the number one non-fiction video company across all screens, and more than quadrupled the size of Discovery’s on-line video business. Perrette established Discovery’s industry-leading presence in digital video with the acquisitions of Revision3 and DeFranco Creative, strategic investments in Lumosity and Learnist, and the launches of online video networks TestTube and Animalist. Under his leadership, innovative live online experiences complementary to Discovery’s programming and brands – such as SKYWIRE LIVE WITH NIK WALLENDA and Animal Planet L!VE – were also established, enhancing Discovery’s offering and deepening viewer engagement across multiple screens. Prior to joining Discovery, Perrette spent 11 years with NBCUniversal, most recently serving as President, Digital and Affiliate Distribution and Content Distribution Strategy, leading North American distribution of television and film content across platforms. He helped launch new digital channels Sleuth (now Cloo), Chiller and Universal HD, and played a leadership role in developing the industry-leading digital venture, Hulu. Perrette’s previous roles at NBC Universal included CFO of Bravo Media, and VP of NBC Business Development, and he also served on the boards of Hulu, A&E Television Networks, and the Sundance Channel. Before joining NBC in 2000, Perrette was a member of General Electric’s top leadership development program based in London, and at CS First Boston in London and Tokyo. Perrette received his B.A. from Hamilton College. .

  • A Call for Rethinking Cultural Studies
BEYOND CELEBRATION: A CALL FOR RETHINKING CULTURAL STUDIES Carolyn Lea A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 2007 Committee: Dr. Ellen Berry, Advisor Dr. Nancy C. Patterson Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Donald McQuarie Dr. Ewart Skinner © 2007 Carolyn Lea All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Ellen Berry, Advisor This is a polemical dissertation which seeks to serve as an intervention into the theoretical debates and tensions within cultural studies. These debates, which have taken place over the last few decades, have centered on the populist bent within cultural studies, the turn away from the concerns of political economy, and the influence of French theories that emphasize signification, play, and relativism. At stake in these debates is our way of understanding the world and imagining it differently. I argue that the celebratory direction found in much of the work by cultural studies scholars in which resistance, subversion and transgression are located in all things popular has led to an expressivist politics which lacks explanatory power and is symptomatic of a loss of political will. This dissertation critiques three particular directions that exemplify the celebratory turn: claims regarding transgression; claims regarding audience activity; and celebratory accounts of consumption. Chapter one provides an exposition of the debates that have plagued cultural studies, laying the ground for later arguments. Chapter two provides an introduction to reality television which is enlisted as a cultural symptom through which to interrogate weaknesses in theoretical positions (in chapters three through five) adopted by cultural studies scholars and strengths in alternative theoretical legacies.
