December, 1960. 1­­Monthly meeting of the Black Horse Drove Women's Institute The meeting was marked by the presence of two visitors Mrs Lester from London, and Miss Reynolds from Sussex ' 3­­Annual Christmas Fair in aid of church funds held in the Constitutional Hall. It was opened by Captain J. C. Payne son of the Rev. Canon J. K. C. Payne. A sincere welcome was given to Captain H. Clark, the newly­appointed officer to the Salvation Army. The ceremony took place at the Salvation Army Hall and the welcoming address was given by the Corps S/Major, Mr. W. Storey. 4­­At the Black Horse Drove Methodist Church a tape­recording was made of the afternoon service, which was conducted by a party of friends from Burwell. !!! 6­­At a meeting of the Education Committee, Mr. C. R. Browning, Headmaster of the Martin School, reported that new accommodation was required for those pupils who remained at school after the age of 15. A grant of £70 was made to provide a boat house for the protection of the school's canoes and sailing­craft. 7­­At a meeting of a Special Sub­Committee appointed by the Isle of Ely Education Committee, it was announced that Littleport Parish Council had offered to hand over the sum of £2,350 if the Committee provided a swimming pool at the Martin School.

The cake was cut by the two oldest members present­­Mr. and Mrs. R. Coverdale. Following an accident near the Ex­Servicemen's Club, Mr. B. C. Dodman, of New Road, was detained at the R.A.F. Hospital, Ely. He had been involved in a collision with a car driven by his neighbour, Mr. Sidney Creak. 4­­P.c. J. E. Evison gave demonstrations and talks on road drill to children of the Coronation School, Black Horse Drove. 9­­Members of the Women's Fellowship paid a visit to the Anglia Television Studios at Norwich where they formed the main part of the audience at the Mid­Day Show. "Eldernell", a small modern residence at 46, High Street, Littleport, was sold for &3,500 by Messrs. George Comins and Son at the Constitutional Hall. Purchaser was Mr. A. Dewey of Eltham, London, S.E.9. The property was sold by order of Mr. C. J. E. S. Fendick. 9­­10­Children of the County Primary School gave a delightful presentation of "Oliver Twist". The role of Oliver was played by Rodney Watson. 10­­Meeting at Ely of the Ely Methodist Circuit. It was agreed to buy land at Littleport for the erection of a new manse. 12­­Miss Margaret Davy, headmistress of the County Primary School, opened the Parish Church Christmas Fair.

It was revealed that Mrs. H. Rowell, local detachment commandant, had been presented with the Honorary Life Membership Badge for outstanding work in connection with the Red Cross. British Legion Women's Sections Group Meeting held at Little Downham. A highlight was the presentation of the Readhead Cup to Mrs. A. Sallis of the Littleport Branch, the year's winner of the Standard Bearers' contest. 2­­Annual Parish Church Sale raised £17O for the organ fund. 9­­Miss Cynthia Greenacre, of 38, Upton Place, Littleport, was chosen as "Miss Littleport" in the annual competition organised by the local British Legion Women's Section. Littleport's effort for the 1961 Poppy Day appeal, realised the total of £274 3s. 0d., the highest sum since records were first kept in 1921. The organiser was Mrs. Ida Rowell. At the annual prize­giving of the Royal Marines School of Music at Deal, Junr. L./Cpl. Stephen Misson, a cornet player, and the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. I. Misson, of 5, Lynn Road, was presented with a silver medal for winning the year's "Cassell's Prize" in competition for the most outstanding player.
