Some hoops did produce the visual effect of perching a basket on either hip; however, the term was derived from the fact that both baskets and panniers might be made of wicker. In England, they were more likely to be called hoops. The French pannier, a rare surviving example, has been fitted with hinges that allow the hoops to be lifted, facilitating movement in tight spaces. This outfit was based on clothing worn by the hero of the childrenâs book of the same name. The similarity of this costume to that worn by Oscar Wilde was no coincidence. FASH 124 Olivia Liu 10/20/2019 History of Costume Illustrated Digital Vocabulary List Chapter 17: The New Look Fashion Conformity Prevails, 1947-1960 Beatniks The predecessors of the youthful protests movements of the 1960s were the beatniks, who appeared in the latter part of the 1950s. Beginning as a literary movement that included writer Jack Kerouac and poets Allen Ginsberg and Gregory Corso, the ”beats” adopted eccentric habits of dress and grooming- “beards, pony tails, dirty sneakers, peasant blouses” (Brooks, 1966, 232). They experimented with drugs, turned to eastern mysticism, especially Zen Buddhism, and rejected the “square” world.
