TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST “Mr. and Mrs. ” October 20, 2013 11:00 AS WE GATHER The word trust is central to the Christian faith. Being anchored in Christ through Word and Sacrament increases our faith and trust in the one Triune God. Many of the Scripture readings either use the word trust or illustrate it through the actions of faithful people---people like the unnamed woman in the Gospel reading for today. The hymnals used in The Lutheran Church---Missouri Synod for the past decades have had a significant section under the category of Trust. Singing the words commended to us by hymn- writers of past and present remind us of Christ's faithfulness and magnify our need to trust in Him. As the season of Pentecost draws to a close, we affirm that, as the Holy Spirit works in and among us, our trust in Christ is strengthened and secure. PRE-SERVICE “Follow Me There” Third Day You need a place where you can find some shelter. Follow me there, follow me there. You want a hand to hold, someone to help you. Follow me there, come on, follow me there. CHORUS: Where love like a river flows, peace like you’ve never known And joy never ending lives, A place where faith can find, Hope that will never die, Follow me there, come on, follow me there. You need a place to be your sanctuary. Follow me there, come on, follow me there. Where you can lay down all those burdens you carry. Follow me there, come on, follow me there. CHORUS Where the lost can find salvation And the lonely finds a friend. Where the sinner finds forgiveness Won’t you follow me there -- won’t you follow me there. [22] The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two female servants, and his eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. [23] He took them and sent them across the stream, and everything else that he had. [24] And Jacob was left alone. And a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day. [25] When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched his hip socket, and Jacob's hip was put out of joint as he wrestled with him. [26] Then he said, "Let me go, for the day has broken." But Jacob said, "I will not let you go unless you bless me." [27] And he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said, "Jacob." [28] Then he said, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed." [29] Then Jacob asked him, "Please tell me your name." But he said, "Why is it that you ask my name?" And there he blessed him. [30] So Jacob called the name of the place Peniel, saying, "For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered." Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 121 (My help comes from the L ORD .) LSB I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the L ORD , who made heaven and earth. He will not let your foot be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The L ORD is your keeper; the L ORD is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The L ORD will keep you from all evil; He will keep your life. The L ORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. 4 EPISTLE 2 Timothy 3:14---4:5 ( Paul counsels Timothy on faithful leadership .) [14] But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it [15] and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. [16] All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, [17] that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work.
