~18 SOUTH STONEHAM P .A.RISH. charitable Miss EMMA. SMITH, of GZenville, who for many years had relieved more than 100 of the poor of Bitteme, with bread, clothing, &c., died in October, 1858. CHURCH (Holy Saviaur) is a. neat structure, in the decorated style, consisting of a nave and north aisle, with a finely proportioned tower, crowned by a broached spire, 110 feet high. It was built in 1853, from designs by G. Gui11aume, Esq., at the cost of about £3100, raised by subscription, but chiefly contributed by the incumbent and his friends. It has 666 sittings, of which 428 are free. It contajns a neat mural tablet in memory of a son of Admiral Martin, who was killed at Cawnpore, in India, in 1857. The church yard was given by the Vicar of South Stoneham. The benefice is a perpetttal curacy, valued at £200, in the patronage of the Bishop ofWinchesier, and incumbency of the Rev. Henry Usbome, B ..A.., who was inducted in 1852, when the church district was established. Near the church is a neat school, built in 1856, of white brick, at the cost of about £800, raised by subscription. In the village is an Infant School, erected in 1857, at the sole expense of Miss Usbome. It cost about £400, and is a. neat red brick structure. Bitteme Mutual Improvement Society, established a few years ago, has a reading room, library, classes, and occasional lectures. The Rev. H. Usbome is the president. HILL, near Botley, but in South Stonebam parish, is the handsome residence of John Fowler, Esq., and com· mands delightful views as far as , the Isle of Wight, &c. SOUTH STONEHAM PARISH DIRECTORY.
