Beginning in 1966 at the newly opened Caesars Palace as a Baccarat shift boss, Epstein eventually purchased a stake in Jackie Gaughan’s El Cortez Hotel and Casino in the mid-seventies. Partnering with Gaughan and his son Michael, he helped build the Barbary Coast, Gold Coast, Orleans, and Suncoast. In 2007, Epstein purchased the El Cortez and continues to work as the casino’s chief executive officer today. _________________________________________________ I. EARLY LIFE Will you tell us about your life growing up, starting with where you were born? Well, I was born in Chicago, Illinois, July 10th, 1941. My father, Ike Epstein, was a gambler, a professional gambler. He started out as a horse-book banker at first. He had guys at the racetrack, then he got to be a layoff book banker. So that’s how I grew up in the business. Mostly with horses, but later on with sports. As a kid, did you have any particular hobbies or things that you would like to do for fun? Oh, baseball. Boyd has been an integral part of the Las Vegas community and the national gaming industry for many decades. He began his career as a lawyer in Las Vegas where he practiced law for over fifteen years. On January 1st, 1975, Mr. Boyd formed Boyd Gaming with his father, Sam Boyd.1 After many new ventures, acquisitions, and an initial public offering, Boyd Gaming Corporation now operates twenty-two properties in eight states.2 Moreover, Mr. Boyd’s success is not only reflected by his company’s balance sheet; he has also maintained a life-long commitment to serving the community. The Boyd family’s charitable contributions in Nevada alone are numerous; including, establishing multiple Boys and Girls Clubs, the William S. The annual number of visitors to Las Vegas exceeded 42 million for the fourth consecutive year in 2018. Total gaming revenue for Clark County properties exceeded $10.2 billion in 2018, surpassing the $10-billion mark for the first time since 2007. Market-wide occupancy, average daily rate (ADR), and revenue per available room (RevPAR) declined slightly in 2018, compared to 2017; however, in the year-to-date period through May 2019, occupied rooms, ADR, and RevPAR increased when compared to the same period in 2018. Continuing development of numerous gaming, lodging, and entertainment venues will enable the market to retain its status as a premier destination. This article examines trends and market developments affecting the Las Vegas hospitality market. VISITATION The tourism, gaming, and convention industries are dependent upon the volume of visitors to the region. Las Vegas continues to be recognized as a top U.S. destination and is fourth on TripAdvisor’s 2019 list of Travelers' Choice “Top 25 U.S. Destinations,” dropping from third in 2018. Over 42 million people visited Las Vegas for the fourth consecutive year in 2018.
