INCORPORATED WEEKLY RECREATIONAL ROAD RIDES AND RACES COME ALONG DAILY VELODROME TRACK SESSIONS AND COACHING FOR THE RIDE FOR FUN OR FITNESS, RIDE WITH A SAFE, SUPPORTIVE BUNCH Web: www.cyclingsouth.org.nz Ph: 03 217 3215 Welcomes The BikeNZ Age Group & Omnium Track National Championships is a standout event on our National calendar, encompassing Age Group events and also the U19 Omnium, which attracts a wealth of world class athletes. New Zealand is privileged to have several extremely talented Age Group cyclists, including current world champions who will don the rainbow jersey when they race on the boards of the SIT Zero Fees Velodrome in Invercargill. Young athletes destined to join the ranks of BikeNZ’s elite will compete at the event, providing a unique opportunity to observe the rise of future champions. The battle for the National Points Shield also commences in Invercargill, with the winner decided the following weekend at the Elite & U19 Track Championships in Cambridge. I’d like to thank Cycling Southland for all their great work in organising these championships, the many dedicated cycling officials, support services and numerous event volunteers that make the event the success that it is. I’d also like to thank the Lion Foundation for their support and all the local sponsors without whom we could not make this happen. The BikeNZ Age Group & Omnium Track National Championships is where we celebrate our talented tracks cyclists in all age groups and categories, and we look forward to seeing the next round of national champions being crowned in Invercargill. Brian Broad – BikeNZ – Interim CEO Cycling Southland again welcomes you to the BikeNZ Age Group and Omnium Track National Championships at the SIT Zero Fees Velodrome. The talent and calibre of the riders attending these championships promises to provide some very exciting racing and record-breaking efforts. These championships again provide a key platform for riders, officials and volunteers to further hone their skills and gain experience for future events. We hope that you enjoy the event and achieve to the very best of your ability. We are very proud of our world class indoor velodrome. After having held the national championships in Invercargill for the last seven years we now look forward to sharing these with the new indoor track in Cambridge where the 2014 BikeNZ Elite and Under 19 Track National Championships will be held from 13 to 16 March 2014. Thanks as always to the huge number of officials who will collectively put in thousands of volunteer hours in delivering this event. You remain the pulse of Cycling Southland and we remain in your debt for your generous contribution. We also recognise the valuable contribution made by BikeNZ, Lion Foundation, ILT Foundation, and other valued sponsors – your support is truly appreciated. Have a safe and memorable week and we look forward to you returning to events in the future. The Keirin is raced over a distance of 2000 metres with a maximum field of eight riders. A motorbike (derny) paces the field over the first 1400 metres, starting off at 30km/h and bringing the riders up to 50km/h. (Women’s Keirin 25–45km/h). Riders manoeuvre for the most favourable position before the derny leaves the track. No cyclist is permitted to pass the derny, which departs with two and a half laps remaining and then the battle begins.
