NEW RELEASES NO. 2 - 2018

Dirtmusic: Bu Bir Ruya GBCD 55 / 4030433605523 / label: Glitterbeat Records / format: CD / Various – Popular GBLP 55 / 4030433605516 / label: Glitterbeat Records / format: LP / Various – Popular Bu Bir Ruya is a questing, restless record for the head, but perhaps more so for the body. It broods throughout, as post-punk, Turkish psych, funk, rock and electronics stalk the grooves with widescreen intent. "Love is a Foreign Country", features a startling appearance by Gaye Su Akyol, a treat for those who loved her Hologram İmparatorluğu, one of the most striking Glitterbeat releases of 2016. Fans of Baba Zula, Turkey’s premier psychedelicists, will also have more than enough to chew on, particularly in the remarkable title track that closes the album. Listen here.

Atamina: Sycophantic Friends MRCD 21 / 8713406450158 / label: Makkum Records / format: CD / Ghana – Popular MRLP 21 / 8710496976674 / label: Makkum Records / format: LP / Ghana - Popular (23-2-2018) Atamina, or actually we should say Dr. Professor Atamina, is one of the protagonists of the new wave of Kologo Power, a music scene that hails from Ghana's North East Region, that spread all over, and is now conquering the whole world. Atamina is the smart guy, with tongue-in-cheek social-critical lyrics, pulling away the carpet under the feet of West Africa's new developing bourgeoisies. There is a strong link to the Delta blues with its story-telling but Atamina might as well be called the Sleaford Mods of West Africa with his stripped beats and obnoxious rants. The LP will be available on Friday February 23rd. Listen here.

It Dockumer Lokaeltsje: Tonger MRCD 22 / 8718906117044 / label: Makkum Records / format: CD / Netherlands – Pop-Rock MRLP 22 / 5010477345950 / label: Makkum Records / format: LP / Netherlands – Pop-Rock The music magazine Vinyl once called It Dockumer Lokaeltsje the “Chroniclers of Weird Frisian Life”. On Tonger, the band chronicle away lustily, while within eighteen new songs new little musical avenues are explored, branching left and right. David Thomas of Pere Ubu used to document his home region around Cleveland, Ohio by taking on the role of various characters in his songs. In the same way, we can lend our ear to the outpourings of a gamut of different characters in the songs of It Dockumer Lokaeltsje. "It had to be different. It had to be short. And it had to be in Frisian." Listen to a track.

Ross Daly & Kelly Thoma: Lunar RDKT 6 / 0191924364016 / label: Ross Daly & Kelly Thoma / format: 2CD/ Greece – Traditional Ever since the most ancient times, the moon has always been a source of fascination, but equally of apprehension for all peoples of all civilisations. Perhaps this is because the light of the moon is reflected light, light whose source is elsewhere where we are unable to see. In this sense it resembles music itself which becomes manifest in the world through us, although it does not originate in us. All music pre-exists in a non- manifest realm of possibility and it is only through our perception of these possibilities that it comes to realisation in the world as we know it.

Kelly Thoma: 7 Fish RDTK 3 / 0889211270811 / label: Ross Daly & Kelly Thoma / format: CD / Greece – Traditional A female lyra player, composer, musician of Crete and of the world. Kelly Thoma is undoubtedly one of the most exceptional pioneers of contemporary Cretan music. The sounds of her lyra converse with the lyra of Ross Daly, traditional rhythms encounter experimentation and fresh music paths, and this is how, more or less, Kelly became the co-creator of another music genre that exceeds the boundaries of Cretan music and strict music categories. Eight new compositions by Kelly Thoma rising from the depths of the ocean of music, influenced by various modal traditions. Listen here.

Marcel Cranc: 7 RUN 2017059 / 8435383639394 / label: Runaway Records / format: CD / Spain – Popular Marcel Cranc is the artistic name of Mallorcan composer Miquel Vicensastre. Hector Guerra: Desde El Infierno KM 118 / 8435307604811 / label: Kasba / format: CD / Spain-Mexico – Urban Latin Musically, Héctor Guerra brings hip hop lyrics, dancehall beats, the taste of cumbia, the mysticism of Andean music, the power of electronics... A perfect mixture between urban sounds and traditional Latin music. In this way Guerra unites these two worlds in the songs through a beat cumbia-trap with rhymes in Spanglish, supported by the Caribbean beatmaker KJU or by Professor Angel Sound from Barcelona. Among the outstanding collaborations we find maestro Alberto Pedraza, with whom he performs a new version of his hit "La Cumbia Callejera". Chilean Mariel Mariel Mariel and Latin rap legend Mellow Man Ace also leave their mark. Listen to the teaser.

Gasteiz Big Band: Radio Radetzky ORDKLP 11 / 5054282348690 / label: Orrua Diskak / format: LP / Spain-Euskadi – Popular Fearlessness, good humor, breaking borders and openness to the musical world. These are, fundamentally, the foundations on which the music of the Gasteiz Big Band is based on their second album' Radio Radetzky'. They offer a de-complexed tour of a wide and varied musical range, which goes from bolero (' Siboney'), to jazz standards (' Too darn hot', by Cole Porter) to pop (' How deep is your love', popularized by the Bee Gees or' Wonderwall' by Oasis) and classical music, with the theme that gives the album its title. Andres de Jerez & Samuelito: Aranando el Alma BUDA 5782644 / 0602557826449 / label: Buda Musique / format: CD / Spain – Flamenco In 2014, Andrés de Jerez and Samuelito meet at the Festival Arte Flamenco de Mont-de-Marsan. From this encounter a common project was born: to make a flamenco puro record, with emotion of Andrés's voice, and the freshness of Samuelito's gitar playing. Andrés de Jerez, a life of cante jondo to the extreme, played with the greatest flamenco artists. Samuelito: passionate about Manuel Agujetas's flamenco since childhood, already dreaming of playing guitar and imagining himself one day accompanying the cante puro. This record is much more than a musical performance, it is an artistic and singular achievement. Listen to a track.

Flor de Zinc: Crebe de Set BUDA 5754746 / 0602557547467 / labell Buda Musique / format: CD / France – Folk Since the end of the 18th century, the Auvergne colony has been able to preserve and develop dance practices in the urban environment while adapting to this social and economic context, which is often considered hostile. The practices of Auvergne dances and music will continue to this day in different forms: social or social balls, family celebrations, folk groups,"revivalist" movements... And everything leads us to believe that it is not over. Listen here.

The voices of Louise Støjberg and Martin Rauff harmonize very well although both voices are rather rough and clear. Together they make a very nice sound. Almost only accompanied by acoustic guitar, whereby different playing techniques are used. The music also bears a slight resemblance to Alternative Country, as we know it from Steve Earle or Earle & Colvin. Louise Støjberg and Martin Rauff prove to be excellent composers who can also present their music convincingly.
