Babiarz Department of Anthropology University of Maryland College Park, Maryland 20742 Report Prepared for The Maryland Department of Natural Resources 580 Taylor Avenue Tawes State Office Building Annapolis, MD 21401 Archaeology in Annapolis A Cooperative Project between The University of Maryland at College Park, The Banneker-Douglass Museum, and The City of Annapolis 2008 Abstract This report describes a three years of investigations to further define the archaeological resources of the privately owned Wye Hall plantation (18QU977), late 18th century home of William Paca, Maryland governor and signer of the Declaration of Independence. Wye Hall is located on Wye Island on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in Queen Anne‟s County. Past archaeological work at Wye Hall, from 2000 through 2002, revealed extensive information about the design and usage of the original mansion and gardens from William Paca‟s time. The fieldwork documented in this report was centered on investigation of the area to the east of the main mansion, which is believed to be an area of enslaved habitation during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. This represents the first recognized Phase III investigation of a slave quarter in Queen Anne‟s County. Therefore, the results are very important for augmenting Maryland‟s Eastern Shore narratives of the past, particularly in relation to the voice and space given to African and African American histories.

    St. George Tucker's Buried Landscape, Rediscovered — by Kathleen D . Duncan, Hampton Roads, Virgini a Colonial Williamsburg's Tucker-Coleman property, which date s to 1788 when St. George Tucker first purchased the land, is currently under extensive investigation by garden archaeologists an d conservators . During the past year efforts have also been made t o document and identify the plants currently on the site . Eventually, it is hoped, enough information will b e gathered, using a variety of techniques, to reconstruct th e garden to its late eighteenth- t o early nineteenth-century appearance, in keeping with the present restoration of the home . The Tucker-Coleman property is just over one and one half acres and stands on the corner of Nicholson and what is now calle d Palace Street. It is unique in that, since St. George Tucker bought the property, his direct descendants have lived in and maintained the house and grounds. MD-22 Location: 505 Wye Hall Drive, Wye Island, Queenstown, Queen Anne’s County, Maryland Latitude: 38.888956, Longitude: -76.118572 (Center of House/Terrace, Google Earth, Simple Cylindrical Projection, WGS84) Significance: Wye Hall was built in 1793 by William Paca, a prominent lawyer and politician in Annapolis, Governor of Maryland, and a signer of the Declaration of Independence. It was designed in the Georgian style by Joseph Clark, who led alterations to the Maryland State House in 1785 and 1792. A fire in 1879 destroyed this original mansion with only the central section surviving. The commissioned landscape was designed by Luke O’Dio, an English landscape architect of the 18th Century. The original garden parti at Wye Hall reflected a traditional layout with formal gardens on the primary axis and utilitarian gardens on the cross axis. Formal elements included plants that were both profitable and pleasurable, including diverging rows of fruit trees, flowering shrubs, and perennials. The most notable landscape gesture at Wye Hall was a series of large, raised earthen falls or terraces, upon which the house and gardens were built. Three platforms were developed for the purpose of gaining prospect over the working farms, not only for observation of plantation staff but also to create a sense of power and authority in a period of the Colonies when these principles were fleeting.
