    The 18th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival runs from November 29th to December 7th, 2019. THE MARRAKECH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL UNVEILS ITS OFFICIAL SELECTION Rabat, November 7th, 2019. Some 98 flms from 34 different countries have been selected for the 18th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival, which runs from November 29th to December 7th, 2019. The flms have been programmed in various sections, including the Offcial Competition, Gala Screenings, a tribute to Australian Cinema, Special Screenings, the 11th Continent, a Moroccan Panorama, Cinema for Young Audiences, Jemaa El Fna open-air screenings, Audio-Described Cinema, and tributes to signifcant cinema personalities. The 18th edition of the Marrakech International Film Festival is a showcase of the diversity and creativity of world cinema. Across a wide range of sections, no fewer than 98 movies from 34 countries will be screened. The Ofcial Competition remains faithful to the Festival’s determination to screen frst or second feature-length movies to reveal and promote new talent in international cinema. The 14 flms in competition for the Étoile d’Or de Marrakech all bear witness to an astonishing sense of style and depth of thought, daring to explore new territories and establish personal and very original approaches to cinematographic creation.     NOMINEES ANNOUNCED FOR THE 2015 EE RISING STAR AWARD The EE Rising Star Award nominees for 2015 are: Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jack O’Connell, Margot Robbie, Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley The winner will be announced at the EE British Academy Film Awards ceremony on Sunday 8th February 2015 Nominees were selected by an influential group of jurors including actress Alice Eve, director Dexter Fletcher, film and TV producer Pippa Harris and casting director Nina Gold Voting is now open to the public at ee.co.uk/BAFTA London, 7th January 2015: Today at BAFTA 195 Piccadilly, the nominations for the prestigious EE Rising Star Award 2015 were revealed. The nominations represent five actors and actresses who have demonstrated exceptional talent, and are destined to be bright stars in the future of cinema. 2015 marks the tenth anniversary of the EE Rising Star Award. The nominees for 2015 are: GUGU MBATHA-RAW landed her first major feature film in 2011, with the release of Larry Crowne, directed by Tom Hanks and co-starring Julia Roberts, and later that year was included in BAFTA’s Brits to Watch Initiative. In 2013, Mbatha-Raw starred alongside Willem Dafoe and Anton Yelchin in the Stephen Sommers directed film, Odd Thomas. In the same year, she went on to play the title role of Dido Belle, Britain’s first mixed-race aristocrat, in the period drama film Belle alongside Tom Wilkinson and Emily Watson. The role was pivotal in her career earning her the Best Actress award and a nomination for Most Promising Newcomer at last year’s British Independent Film Awards.

  • Macdonald, Morris and “The Retreat”1
    MacDonald, Morris and “The Retreat”1 Nicholas Salmon or most readers of the [William Morris] Journal, the Society’s headquartersF at Kelmscott House are immediately associated with William Morris who lived there from 1878 until his death in 1896. However, under its previous name—The Retreat—it was the home of another eminent Victorian writer, George MacDonald. MacDonald was probably better known to the contemporary reading public than Morris, as his books sold in huge numbers both in Britain and the United States. Richard H. Reis has even made the controversial claim that MacDonald was “a more important writer . than a number of his better-known contemporaries” amongst whom he cites “Arthur [Hugh] Clough, Charles Kingsley, Walter Pater, [and] . William Morris” (143). The most remarkable thing is that while both men were living at the house they wrote fantasy novels that have since been acknowledged as the precursors of the works of C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien. Morris’s famous prose romances were written at Kelmscott House, while MacDonald wrote two of his most important works at The Retreat: At the Back of the North Wind (1871) and The Princess and the Goblin (1872). Links existed between the two men, however, even before George MacDonald and his family moved to The Retreat in 1867. During his early career one of MacDonald’s greatest patrons was the philanthropist Lady Noel Byron. Indeed, MacDonald later acknowledged this debt by portraying her sympathetically as Lady Barnard in his novel The Vicar’s Daughter (1872), which was also written, incidentally, while he was living at The Retreat.
