Year State Region Reason No. 1. 2017 Jammu Pulwama Mobile Internet services were suspended yet again in Pulwama and district of Kashmir on 16 th August, 2017 to prevent rumour Kashmir mongering after a Lashkar commander was killed in a gunfight with the security forces. 2. 2017 Jammu Kashmir Mobile and broadband Internet services were suspended in the and Valley Kashmir valley in the morning of 15 th August, 2017 as a Kashmir precautionary measure on Independence Day. Services were reportedly restored later in the day. 3. 2017 Jammu Shopian, Internet services were suspended in Shopian and Kulgam district and Kulgam of Kashmir on 13 th August, 2017 to prevent the spreading of Kashmir information after three Hizbul Mujahideen militants including the operations commander, and two army men were killed in an encounter. 4. 2017 Jammu Pulwama Internet services were suspended in Pulwama district of Kashmir and on 9 th August, 2017 as a precautionary measure after three militants Kashmir were killed in a gunfight with the Government forces in the Tral township. Perspectives of Caste Census: Why it is needed today? By Premendra Priyadarshi1 Up to 1931, the Census of India included caste too. This practice was abandoned in 1941 because of protests by the nationalists, and also because it was considered worthless, misleading and a waste of time and energy. Column for religion was continued till 2001 census. Thereafter it was felt to be divisive and abandoned from 2011 census. Yet recently, there have been demands in political establishment for and against the caste census and the Union Government seems to be succumbing to pressures. It is desirable that we examine the perspectives of caste census. Why caste abandoned from census in 1941 The most important reason for abandonment of caste census was the ‗worthlessness‘ of the whole exercise because of inconsistency in caste names, which were not fixed and varied between districts, and with time, high incidence of unreliability of individuals‘ statement about caste etc. The Census Commissioner of India for 1931, J.H. Hutton noted, ―Sorting for caste is really worthless unless nomenclature is sufficiently fixed to render the resulting totals close and reliable approximations. Had caste terminology the stability of religious returns, caste sorting might be worthwhile. With the fluidity of current appellations it is certainly not… 227,000 Ambattans have become 10,000, Navithan, Nai, Nai Brahman, Navutiyan, Pariyari claim about 140,000—all terms unrecorded or untabulated in 1921.‖1 Only explanation for this could be that most of the Ambattans of 1921 changed into some other caste. Similarly, the number of Marathas in Central Provinces and Berar increased from 93,901 in 1911, to 206,144 in 1921.2 This more than 110% increase in number can be explained by the mass mobilization of Kunbis (Kurmi-s) to Marathas during the period. -

Classic Poetry Series Narmadashankar Dave - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Narmadashankar Dave(24 August 1833 – 26 February 1886) Narmadashankar Lalshankar Dave (Gujarati: ?????????? ??????? ???) popularly known as Narmad, was a Gujarati author, poet, scholar and public speaker. <b>Biography</b> Narmad was born in Surat on August 24, 1833. He introduced many creative forms of writing in Gujarati. He wrote pioneering work in such forms as autobiography, poetry, lexicography, historical plays and research in folk literature. He was also an outspoken journalist and a pamphleteer. Narmad was a strong opponent of religious fanaticism and orthodoxy. He promoted nationalism and patriotism - with famous songs like Sahu Chalo Jitva Jang, wrote about self-government and talked about one national language, Hindi, for all of India, nearly five decades before Mohandas Gandhi or Nehru.
